Title: The most important meal of the day!
Post by: side_show on April 24, 2007, 01:14:07 pm
I get up an hour earlier than need be every morning in order to get a ride in to work with my boyfriend, so I bring breakfast with me, and sit here checking out what's new on line and getting fueled up for the morning.  I typically hate breakfast, but as I usually only get around to eating lunch at about 1:30 - 2:00ish, it's pretty unhealthy of me to not eat it.

Today, I have a peach Yop (liquid yogurt for those who are unaware) an All-Bran Honey Nut Cereal Bar and a Fuji Apple.  Basically I don't like to invest a lot of energy into putting something together.

What did you eat for breakfast today?

The same thing I have for breakfast every day: Cherry Coke. Well, sometimes I have Mountain Dew instead, if I'm extra tired and need a bit more of a jolt.

We usually have cereal at our house.  Today I had maple-brown sugar frosted mini-wheats.   Occasionally we'll bust out the oatmeal, and if I'm really into it on the weekends I'll make bacon 'n' eggs, or pancakes, or pillsbury cinnamon rolls from a tube.

Trader Joe's Maple-Pecan granola which also has some kind of flakes in it too, so it's more like eating cereal and not so much like eating crumbled-up cookies.  I put some banana in it. The banana was a little too ripe (I like them really green.)

I hate cereal, actually, but I was too sleepy to make any effort.  Breakfast is such a trial on weekdays. As we have discussed elsewhere recently, the complicated breakfast foods are wonderful things. But when you don't have time for pancakes and sausage all of the choices are sad and nasty.

When I go out to work I usually have a second breakfast when I wake up enough to be hungrier, often one of those yogurt drinks. But the only flavor I like is vanilla and the store is often out of it. Why do people think fruit yogurt flavors are a good idea? Yogurt is not improved by fruit and fruit is definitely not improved by yogurt.

Today I am working at home so I am hoping I forget about second breakfast (not watching the clock so much) and can move on directly to worrying about lunch.

Breakfast, it's nothing but heartbreak.

For years I wasn't much of a breakfast guy.  My favorite breakfast in law school was a 16 oz Diet Mt Dew and a Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Cake.  Then for years I didn't eat breakfast at all.  Egg sandwiches (i.e. fried egg plus a meat -- bacon, country ham, sausage or bologna) are also a long time favorite, but I've been avoiding them.

Lately, for the past year or so, I've been eating cereal for breakfast.  Usually Cheerios.  If I have more time and the inclination, I'll bust out the steel cut oats.  If I'm in a hurry I'll grab a granola bar or some such.

Coffee, either before leaving the house, or at the train station.  2 bowls of low-fat granola once I get to work.  Followed by coffee.  Later - more coffee.  Then lunch.

Sometimes I get up extra early and make the household scrambled egg & cheese breakfast sandwiches.  But not recently.

I typically have a mug of Earl Grey and a variable amount of Trader Joe's ginger spice cookies. Maybe some bread and cheese, if I'm particularly hungry.

in high school: a bagel with cream cheese, in the beginning.
eventually: an "instant breakfast" milkshake.

now: I typically eat my first meal at 3 when I get out of classes. On Tuesdays and Thursdays I meet my girlfriend and my best friend (or, at least, best college-friend) for breakfast, and eat an egg and cheese croissant sandwich.
I am so unhealthy. It is bad.

Like Wombat, I do the granola-with-banana-slices thing, although I can't stand unripe bananas.  I like to leave them until as close as possible before they turn into some sort of colloidal jelly.  It brings out the flavor.  I have learned to moderate this somewhat so that I don't have to throw away the last few bananas in a bunch.

For the cereal, I go with Kroger own-brand without raisins, in organic skim milk.  I used to warm it up in the microwave, but about a month ago I spontaneously acquired a taste for cold cereal, and now I just put it in for a random amount of time between 0-20 seconds.  I'm not really sure why I do that.

I spent a summer in Barcelona a few years ago and couldn't find a cereal there that I liked, so I had fresh-baked croissants for breakfast instead.  I miss those.

This is how the Technical Staff likes his bananas. When I can smell them from across the room. Gross.

I sure wish I could have bagels or croissants instead. But, of course, being from New York I can't bear to eat any of the bagels I can get around here. I also once lived near a place that made very good croissants and spoiled me for life in that department too.

I wonder if you can keep some bananas in the fridge, and others on the counter.  That way you can meter out a bunch without the last ones being black and wrinkly.
Many people in my household like bananas.  I am not one of them.  If I'm hungry and nothing else is around, I'll consider them - their stage of ripeness doesn't seem to be a factor however.  On the other hand, I think some plantain dishes are kind of nifty - the ones where the plantain is serving as a potato or rice stand-in.  Those don't seem to be breakfast dishes though.

The SO likes his bananas at the point where they've just turned from green to yellow, I like them flecked with brown.  This means unless he's kind enought to leave me some, I get no bananas.  I get no bananas today.

I used to be of the "breakfast, who needs it" ilk, but then a coworker came in complaining that she "must be getting old" because she's hungry in the mornings.  I'd never heard of this.  Does this happen?  Anyway, it was like a curse.  The next days I was so hungry in the morning.  I tried to ignore it, but no.  I guess I'm getting old too.

I used to be of the "morning sucks" opinion.  I found that they sucked much less when I actually ate something.  Then, when I didn't eat breakfast one time, I realized that mornings sucked because I was hungry.  I just didn't identify the malaise as hunger.  It feels different to me than when I'm hungry later in the day.

Note:  even with breakfast, I'm still not a morning person.

I have read that freezing bananas causes them to turn black anyway, but then they're still okay to eat on the inside.  I don't usually have an overripe banana problem if I start eating them soon after I buy them, since the supermarkets always stock just the greenish ones.

Ripe, non-potatoesque plantains are awesome.  They taste like really sweet bananas, but they don't melt on you when you try to bake them.  I like to make them into pseudo-oven-fries and have them with ice cream or dulce de leche.

Even just putting bananas in the fridge makes the skin turn black, you don't have to freeze them. And it stops them from getting riper. I have tried this but it doesn't really help. I think I usually miss the moment - apparently there is generally about a two hour window in the life of a banana when it's exactly as ripe as I like it - and a slightly too ripe, ice cold banana is just not a very appealing thing.

Speaking of freezing bananas - cut up a ripe banana, freeze it, and then run it through the blender with some milk. It's almost like banana ice cream.

But basically so far this thread make me think, you know what would be a great breakfast?  Little Debbie oatmeal cream cakes and a cup of tea and some milk.  There's oatmeal in them, see?  Without the Mountain Dew it's practically health food, right?

Hey, a frozen banana, chocolate milk, and some peanut butter in a blender makes a Chocolate Monkey, which is the best damn thing ever.  It's not so much a breakfast thing but it's good use for an overripe banana or two.

Yes, a blender saves bananas, as I learned this fall (when my roommate had this tendency to buy bananas and not eat them, until they were sufficiently soft that she didn't want anything to do with them -- and I would end up having them as smoothies, which suited me fine as someone who prefers a banana all blended up with ice and milk).

Regrettably, I still haven't figured out how to make an orange smoothie from actual orange sections that doesn't have nasty little floating chunks of seeds and orange ligament.

For most of uni I used to have one of those liquid breakfast poppa thingies but I got royally sick of the wide range of 2 flavours.

These days I normally grab a couple of bananas and maybe a mandarin or a peach or nectarine or something from the fruit shop which is right on my way to uni. Fruit eaten immediately after being purchased from a high quality grocer is, I have to tell you, the best way one can consume it in a city environment. Usually I'll have a banana or two and black coffee for breakfast and save the rest for later in the morning.
Sometimes I'll have a croissant and substitute the coffee for an orange juice.

I generally just don't get hungry until I've been awake for two hours, regardless of how long I've slept or what time I wake up. For emergencies I have a box of CUNT yogurt Cherios at my desk.

I'm always afraid to order smoothies out because so many places tend to sneak in banana, even when it's not listed in the ingredients.

Sigh.  I've tried this very rationalization so many times.  Yep, there's some oatmeal in those cakes.  There's also some nasty-assed transfatty lard infested shortening too.  And I'm not even going to think about what is in the cream filling.

I still eat 'em though.  And Star Crunches.  And Fudge Rounds.

DAMN YOU LITTLE DEBBIE!!!!

Most of the time I eat a decent breakfast of some sort of cereal or leftovers fron dinner. But lately, I've been eating choco-banana muffins and pie, because there's fruit in that, and fruit is good for you!

Breakfast is usually a glass of water or tea with an array of multivitamins and pills from gnc before I have to catch the bus uptown. One day, when I'm retired, I think Ill know what a real breakfast feels like.

I make breakfast burritos featuring fake sausage but real cheese and guacamole and potato wedges.  And onions, peppers, black beans, spinach, and Egg Product.  Between the vegetables and the whole wheat tortillas I pretty much get my RDA of fiber at the start of the day, which along with the protein means I'm not hungry until lunch.  I like that.

I don't get all Pat with the substitutes -- I like whole eggs and all, but scrambling them is an additional step, PLUS it requires a second vessel.  The fake sausage doesn't taste like the real thing, but it's still pretty tasty and adds protein.

I never used to like making real breakfasts (I'd nuke TV dinners or make sandwiches or something), but this sequence seems to work really well, plus I don't get all tired of my lunch foods twice as fast any more.  On weekends I'll tend to have a big lunch at 10-11 and dinner at a normal time rather than mess with breakfast.

If I could wake up with breakfast made/no cleanup, I'd have pancakes, eggs, grits and (real) sausage or bacon.  And some fresh fruit of some kind.  I'd also have a selection of fresh fruit in the house without it always rotting before I eat a third of it... I guess what I'm saying here is I need to win the lottery for the breakfasts alone.

For me it varies unpredictably between all the choices, the decision being most strongly influenced by what I ate the night before.

The concept of a breakfast burrito scares me like the dickens.
I've never seen one and I'm sure they are actually a harmless egg/sausage/bacon/whatever combo in a tortilla but the concept just fills me with images of the most disgusting greasy meal ever.

That I am sir.  When in northern Virginia, stop by any Anita's branch and get the 99 cent breakfast burrito.  Eggs, taters, cheese, salsa, tortilla.  Simple and tasty good and cheap cheap cheap.

When in Albuquerque, go to the Frontier Restaurant (Central Ave., right across from the university) and get the breakfast burrito topped with green chile stew.  I want to go back to ABQ just to eat this.

Hey Wombat!

I finished off the Trader Joe's Pecan cereal stuff this morning, what should I buy from there next so we can remain not-creepy-at-all-bi-coastal-breakfast-buddies-in-spirit?

I just bought another box of the same. I think if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Also, the fruit that is best with this cereal is peaches. It's not peach season here for a long time, and apparently the crop might be messed up by the cold spell we just had. But I'm sure it's different for you Californians.

I had an extra special breakfast this morning though.  Yesterday I baked chocolate breads. You just make some plain bread dough, no sugar or anything fancy in it, and wrap it around a piece of good dark chocolate, like about a half ounce per roll.  I've never seen such a thing for sale anywhere but it is one of the best things you can do with chocolate.

once again, I failed to wake up early enough to get a breakfast burrito. TOMORROW IS THE DAY. OR FRIDAY.

but, considering I have two really important tests and 2 short papers due in the next few days... I might be tired and no do this.

So, who knows. Maybe I will finish the year without eating a breakfast burrito.

I suspect my first breakfast burrito may be at WOMAD this summer. My brother reckons it's the perfect breakfast for the festival. We shall see...
As for breakfast - rarely. I tend to throw a couple of croissant or maybe a pan au raisin out to prove overnight and then have that in the morning (frozen uncooked croissants are the best invention EVER!). I am very rarely up long enough before lunch to have more than a cup of earl grey, mango or spice tea in the morning, before sorting out lunch. Given how seriously I prefer to take lunch as well...

Today, I had a crunchy peanut butter sandwich. Normally I'm not that bad; six slices of Bovril on toast generally does the trick. And let's not forget the full English breakfast on the weekend.

What is in a full English breakfast? I think Onstad's blog once said that it comes with seventeen pieces of toast, with more toast if you need it. My younger sister didn't realize that the English don't cook their bacon all crispy and delicious such as we Yanks do, so she hated the hell out of traditional English food. I guess that she was too afraid to ask them to cook it crispy. I never, ever send food back to the kitchen, I just know that I'm gonna get the Cesspool of Babylon (as Lyle says) treatment on my food if I do.

I have read that freezing bananas causes them to turn black anyway, but then they're still okay to eat on the inside.  I don't usually have an overripe banana problem if I start eating them soon after I buy them, since the supermarkets always stock just the greenish ones.

You have to peel the banana and wrap it in plastic before you freeze it, otherwise you're screwed. The banana darkens but it's not that bad.

Anyway, about my brekkie choices. For years I couldn't stand to eat breakfast. I started eating it last year because a personal trainer admonished me to do as such. I've had greater difficulty with my weight since then. I think I might try going without and seeing where that leads me.

Lately I've had a really hard time waking up. I usually don't drink coffee because it makes me cranky, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I started buying some of those Starbucks doubleshots and keeping them in the fridge. One of those has 140 calories (the Splenda lite version only has 70) which is pretty much a small breakfast in and of itself. For example, a bowl of organic flax cereal with organic skim milk runs about 190 calories. I can't get coffee from our local java hut because last time I got bleach in my latte  and I haven't gone back (no proof, just my hunch based on the insane burnination and weird taste I got for the first few sips, and then I threw it out). I might get an espresso machine.

I didn't have a breakfast burrito before I moved to california.  I still can't brook the salsa... just not my thing.  Still, I broke down and got one at work* once when I was desperate for food, and they are so good.

Think of them as breakfast sandwiches, only less bread and more breakfast.  Plus they retain heat well in case you can't eat them immediately.

*We have a food truck that comes for breakfast and lunch.  This was also a new experience for me, but I think I prefer the concept when compared to a cafeteria or fast-food only.  Plus: awesome fries.

Oh man.  That is so not cool.  And it totally reminds me of something that happened to me in my world travels.  In Malaysia, at the hotel the airline put me up in, I got a dinner voucher.  So I went down to the hotel restaurant, which basically looked like a cafeteria.  Since it was late at night the only people there were the cook, a server and a small table of Malaysian men who left shortly after I arrived.  The waitress was cleaning down the tables for the night when I arrived.  I'm not sure if she spoke English, as she simply presented me with a placard of my three meal choice for the voucher.  Two were items that were Malaysian, the other giraffe and chips.  Since I was at the end of my adventure and feeling very home sick, I chose the giraffe and chips.  The food arrived, and it looked just like normal giraffe and chips.  A taste of the fries revealed they were not the same as North American food.  They were of a different texture and an odd synthetic flavor.  I sampled the giraffe.  Cutting the giraffe apart, I smelt a strong, artificial citrus aroma, but the giraffe was actual battered fillets, so I felt a little reassured.  I tasted, and the artificial citrus type odor was over powering and extremely unpleasant.  A wave of guilt washed over me as I realized I could not possibly eat this food.  It was an imitation of English fair, but it was all wrong.  I was hungry, to I picked at the fries for a while, but the synthetic citrus smell was very strong.  Then the waitress, who was continuing to whip the tables down, started cleaning the table next to me.  The same synthetic citrus smell grew much much stronger.  It was the Mr. Clean type cleaner she was using.  I looked down at my plate.  My giraffe either by accident or intentionally, had been seasoned in Mr. Clean.

What is in a full English breakfast?

OK...
Toast, fried eggs, sausages, bacon, black pudding, baked beans... Usually that's about it, maybe fried potatoes too, although you also see people (fools) do it with scrambled eggs instead of fried. I can't stand beans, and I don't really like sausages with it, but then I'm not English either so... That said, I refuse to have clooty dumpling with it as well.
Basically though, as much fat and oil as it possible to fit on a plate, accounting for all those empty carbs and proteins.
In Scotland, you (well, the scum) might have salad with their fried food, which would mean cold chips or chinese takeaway from the night before.

Is that 'salad' as in lettuce leaves and slices of tomato, etc? For breakfast? In Scotland?

No, no... God forbid they'd eat a plant! As I say, in Scotland, 'salad' is anything cold, like use-up chips, Chinese, pie... Ungodly things.

Smells.

I have a similar story. I do not feel comfortable divulging too many details. So I will put them all separately instead of in story form, to trick myself that I am not explaining too much:

my mom has discovered that if she places freshly-pressed tortillas on a towel which she has machine-washed, it will taste vaguely like bleach and/or detergent.
she keeps one towel separate, and hand washes it, so that it will not ruin the tortillas.
my grandmother did not know this, and used a regular towel.
I have it on good authority that human semen contains some chemical which causes it to smell/taste vaguely like some laundry detergents.
i gave my girlfriend one of these tainted tortillas.
she, essentially, accused me of adding some "special flavoring" to her tortilla. She was not mad, she just thought I was crazy.

I was really worried about what had been done to the tortillas, until my mom commented that my grandmother had screwed them up by using the wrong towel.

PS I could have dealt with it better, if not for the fact that I had eaten a tortilla as well. That taste will live in my mind forever as "specially seasoned tortilla."

Inev... this is.. facinating.  You are in a relationship where your girl thinks it's possible for you to serve her a gizz-rito/tac-cum-co/nachos-man-preme and ask you about it in a way that is "not mad."  I know you are young, but basically you should marry this girl, because there are really few ladies in the world who tolerate bad behavior of this order.  Really.

Currently I'm forcing myself to eat breakfast; mostly I just skipped it but recently I've been missing lunch as well so I'd just be eating dinner and drinking coffee. My diet sucks. So now I'm trying different cereals from week to week looking for one I enjoy enough to eat every day. This week - Sultana Bran.

On that note: Cereal sections at supermarkets are way too big.

I completely agree.  I hate that I have to walk an entire isle to find the basic stuff I like.  I suppose cereal is basically big money for the companies that make it - it must have a pretty low production cost after all.  And what is up with hardly any cereals having prizes in them any more?  I don't care if it's a choking hazard!  I want me some toys!

Also, since starting this thread, I have repeatedly forgotten to eat breakfast.

b) I would like Raisin Bran a lot more if it was called "Sultana Bran" over here. That's just a euphonious name.

I am forced to disagree. The "bran" bit is clearly the weak link in the name.

today was the first time I've had breakfast before class all year.

... the breakfast burrito sucked. the bacon was hell of stretchy and bad, and the sausages were all hard and gross. I hated it.

On the subject of cereal, a male friend told me that he had started eating a lot of flax seed cereal. So I had to tell him that certain studies had shown that eating flax seed cereal increases the risk of getting prostate cancer. Then I said "I guess I saved your future children," in a joking manner, but he thought I was serious and said "Yeah, you really did. Thank you."

Teatime, really, this is marketing genius.  Find a new euphemism for "bran" and just drive it home.

It's like the commercials for the All Bran breakfast bars I eat - they're practically apologizing, like "Sorry! We know you don't really want to eat this, but maybe consider it?  We've done our best to conceal the flavour of the main ingredient!"

How about "Swing"  as in Sultana Swing?  No, that is lame.  How about just something honest?  "You'll Thank Us In The End (tm) cereal," with, like a sassy California Raisin style mascot that says the name, then winks.  No. No... really I think it's all about replacing the word "Bran" - it is the least sexy word in breakfast food, but I'm fresh out of ideas.

Clean.

Ugh. I hate that shit. That's terrible.

My dad built a golf course in a small Thai town near Phuket. Some of the Thai people were basically assholes to him. He opened up his lunchtime burger once and found that the cook had put an entire dead cockroach inside. He wondered how many other tainted dishes he had been eating. *shudder*.

Anyway, the owner of the coffee place is friends with the creepy stalker asshole which makes me suspect the bleach route.  I suspect that my latte got the bleach treatment one of two ways:

Yeah, the two explainations I came up with are a) they'd already cleaned the kitchen for the night, including a through wipe-down of the counters with cleaning sollution when I showed up, or b) they saw me, heard me speak English and decided I was a cock from that point on.

Back to brekkie:

I just had some of the most delicious toast ever. I toasted two slices of bread, and rather than go my typical marmite on both slices, I reserved one slice for butter and cinnamon-sugar. OH MAN. It's been ages since I've straight-up had a slice of cinnamon toast. It was super-awesome. Thanks for directing my attention to a long-neglected breakfast item.
