looks like Molly-haters have some ammo this time around ... nevertheless, it's nice to see her take on the Achewood all-caps rant.

It is sad that the text of the last panel is too long for a thread title. While we never had a gift registry and don't own nice tableware for dinner parties (in fact we still eat off of plates that we bought at a yard sale fifteen years ago - although, it is a matching set) and I don't want any, Molly is absolutely right here about the tendencies of the opposite gender.

that was my thought too, but on the off chance someone came here before they saw today's strip it'd just be giving the whole thing away.

You don't often see antimacassar in a sentence. You don't often meet anybody under the age of 120 who knows what one is.

I do get yelled at for this. Like if I put some frozen pizza in the toaster oven I'll put it on foil first. Because that way I don't have to wash the little baking tray or dirty a plate. Why do we even have aluminum foil if I'm not allowed to eat off of it?

This is the first time in a while that I've laughed out loud, and at something the perennially unlikeable Molly said too.  Totally unexpected.  Reusable fart skin.  Nice.

See, Molly is actually talking about me in the last panel. My friends frequently come into my room and say, "SMELLS LIKE LAST NIGHT'S CHINESE IN HERE." I fail to correct them in that it is actually the last four night's Chinese that is smelling.

One of the reasons that my beau may turn into my husband one day: he would make me not do that. And he can cook. What I look for in a man? Someone man enough to be the household manager. Because I'm sure as HELL not doing it.

Also, remember that Molly is actually 400 years old. Thus, her boyfriend gets some of that knowledge imparted from her.

On that note, remember Molly is also Welsh and her rant becomes ten times more awesome when you aurally imagine it in an angry Welsh accent.

Wow, it totally does get funnier if you imagine it in a Welsh accent.

Anyway, while I may get yelled at for this, it's kind of nice to see Molly take some air out of Beef's sails. It is depressing sometimes to be with a guy who can make anything an excuse to be depressed and/or righteously indignant.

I like how Molly's expression gets more and more angered until it culminates in the last panel. I wish I could mimic a Welsh accent, that would be great. At least Onstad doesn't try to approximate it like how Jeff Rowland tries to approximate Baby's English accent (http://overcompensating.com/posts/20070109.html) with "Ehn't" and stuff. It gets annoying to read, although I still love the comic.

I can't help but imagine Baby's dialogue in a really-badly-put-on faux-English accent (cf. Anthony LaPaglia in Frasier, and probably Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins, but that's somehow passed me by all these years.) I don't know if that's the idea or if it's just because of the whole being-English business, but it's a real help.

(I'm reminded of a time when someone wrote to may "I say potato, you say po-tay-to", which was a little perplexing because I just read it the same way twice. The fool.)

(I'm in turn reminded of an excellent sketch from a Secret Policeman's Ball, but sadly I can't find it on That YouTube. Oh well.)

After years of living with me... and then with me with my brother as our roommate... my girlfriend has basically given up on having nice things. She has accepted that I drink my morning coffee out of an Aqua Teen Hunger Force mug I got from an FYE that was closing and my brother drinks his out of a Ghostbusters 2 mug he got at a Goodwill.

Also, the fact that her mom spent most of the time they spent together her entire life trying to push a Manhattan-new-money sense of style and class down her throat because she was ashamed of being lower-middle-class Long Island helps a lot... accepting my manly lack of pretense helps her rebel against her mom's bourgeois tastes.

So everybody wins!

Huh, I've been reading Baby as having a really thick southern accent.  I read the whole archives a couple months ago when a link got posted here on the forums - I don't remember reading anything that pointed to her having an English heritage.

approximate Baby's English accent (http://overcompensating.com/posts/20070109.html)

Surely it's Southern States American? I can't relate 'ya' and 'ehn't' to an English accent at all.

It could be either southern or cockney.  I just kind of read it as general base-ness, as it doesn't really fit any actual accent I've ever heard.

I really wish I had any conception of what a Welsh accent sounds like.  Maybe the internets will help me here...

There was a strip where her accent was mentioned, and it was revealed that she was English. I'll have to dig around to find it.

**EDIT it's here: http://www.wigu.com/overcompensating/2005/02/green-trash-fantasies.html below the comic Jeff says that she's British.

Welsh is disgusting on paper but the odd combination of letters and sounds and lengthening of vowels gives a sing-song accent in the south and west. North welsh accents are harsh with a lot of throat noises and muffled vowels. I didn't understand those folks. Listen to Charlotte Church or Catherine Zeta Jones for the real West welsh deal.

As Molly died 400 years ago, wouldn't the Welsh accent today be way different from her Welsh accent? You know, how apparently an English accent in the 17th/18th century would be like a Southern accent today (or so I've heard). And after 400 years, wouldn't it have standardized a bit?

I'm pretty sure that particular example is guff, but yeah, the accent would've changed. That said, her language is modern, so there's no real reason here accent couldn't have shifted too (though there's no particular reason it should've shifted in the direction of any modern Welsh accent if so. Perhaps she has an accent unique to the part of Heaven she inhabited for so long. Or, you know, would have if she had an accent in any meaningful sense.

my understanding is that the british accent of that time period is what we think of as a kind of general hick accent. "Vittles," "varmint," etc.

Particularities aside, I sincerely doubt that "British" accents then were any more homogeneous then than they are now. In fact, I'd put excellent money on them being substantially less so.

(The few things I've read and heard regarding early sixteenth century London accents, on a just about related note, had it pegged nearer the modern Cornish accent. But I'm not sure how reliable they were.)

Accents decay as they come into contact with other accents, and national/international media only hasten the effect.

It's kind of odd to listen to my family -- My parents both have pronounced southern accents.  My oldest sister has one, too, mostly in the way she enunciates her O's, but it's markedly different from my parents'.  My middle and youngest sisters have so little accent that I didn't even notice it until I had been away for a while.  I dropped mine on purpose, but it wasn't a long trip.  My nieces (oldest sister's kids) have a sort of Midwestern accent with a few southern vowels thrown in.

This isn't to say that Alabamians as a whole don't have accents, but the volume seems to drop on them as time goes by, especially if the people in question hear other accents early in life.  I'd bet that schools in suburban Atlanta, Charlotte, Nashville, or Houston are filled with kids who don't sound so much like their parents.

I can vouch for Charlotte-- plenty. But more than you'd think have accents.

I want one. At this point, basically the only thing that makes me sound southern is occasionally saying "y'all"-- this automatically turns the rest of the sentence into a big mess of accent. which is... strange."d'y'all have sweet tea?" "how're y'all doin' today?" etc.

I'm from the Pacific Northwest.  We don't have accents.

Though, occasionally in a QFC, you'll see a sign that says "Can Food" instead of "Canned Food".  They also say "Soda".   My parents are from the eastern US.  Specifically Ohio (Dad) and my Mom is a Yooper.  They both say "Pop".

My mom is an attorney, so she's fairly well educated.   Her Yooper blood still dictates that when she's on vacation, she takes "Pitchers" of things to remember them later.

No idea, A-CAP, but the lady from Torchwood is hot.

Also, I can embrace a culture who would name someone Myfanwy.

Now: My professional story about Wales.

I work for a phone company.  I may have mentioned this.   Every morning I have to make a bunch of test calls to make sure my switch is not acting in an untoward manner.   Every morning I call a Pizza Hut in Cardiff, Cymru (Wales).  I don't have any kind of family tie to the Welsh.   I just like the fact that I'm calling a Pizza Hut that's across the street from a castle.  I like that the phone makes the ringback tones of the English phone system.  Boop Boop....Boop Boop... I like that they answer with a Welsh accent and say "Pizza Hut, High Street."

I, like clockwork at 8:30am my time, 5:30pm their time, say "Good morning, just checking in." I always wait a beat before I hang up.  I usually get a response of "What?", "Pardon?", or "Eh?"  I explain that to coworkers as me testing for two-way audio.  I know, however, that I'm really just hoping someone connects this string of phone calls togther.  I hope that they're talking about it amongst themselves.  I hope that one day the response will be "Wait!" instead of the usual questions.  I hope I'm a mystery in someone's life.   I've been on nights for a few months, so I haven't been making the morning test calls.   Do they miss me?  I don't know.

I work for a phone company, I make mild prank phone calls for a living.

I still want to know what constitutes an "Alaskan accent," which I got told I had for months after I moved from Fairbanks to Nebraska. Wherever I go, people tell me I have the accent of the last place I lived; I'm starting to think I just have a funny voice.

Every time I think of Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin or Michigan (or more specifically, the winters in those places) and think "how far north those damn places are", I'm usually brought up short by the realization that they're all south of where people live in Canada.  How do they survive winters in Canada?

There's a Yooper in one of our engineering groups.  I like talking to her just to hear her accent.  Plus she's blonde and 6' tall.  Interesting package.

That's a great story!  Why did you choose to use a Pizza Hut in Wales for one of your test calls?  JUST because it's a Pizza Hut across the street from a castle?

I work for a tele-conferencing center & I like calling people abroad to connect them to their conference calls.  They're always incredibly friendly, & I love listening to all the different accents.

It started when some of our customers were having problems with international dialing.  Usually I'll google up some movie theaters or fax machines in whatever area I'm trying to call.  Apparently movie theaters in the UK are all on a special prefix for informational lines.  (Similar but not quite the same a 800/866/888 numbers)

So my second stop was Pizza Hut.  I picked Cardiff, because I had been watching the Doctor Who spin off show, which is set in Cardiff and is not London. (Calls to the London prefix were working, but none of the others were).

I clearly remember taking a picture down that street because it was so utterly British.  You know with the McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Burger King, KFC, Starbucks, etc...   But I checked and alas, no such picture exist.  It must have been another typical English Street that I took that picture of.
