Okay, party people. Here is what I've learned. I would love to hear tips from y'all.
1. Enlist friends to help. However, if you do this - you must have everything boxed before they show up to help (unless they've already agreed to help you pack). It's a total Hunt's Move to have your friends show up, only to find that you're not ready. That is a waste of everybody's time. Or worse - when you've packed poorly, and they end up toting things piece by piece or in grocery bags because you claim, "I'm just moving across the street." That is what my ex did. Hunt's Move. Anyway...I packed until 1AM, then I got up again at 6AM and finished packing. I have all the boxes piled in the living room and my friends are due to show up in about 45 minutes, so I can fuck around on the intarwub until they get here. *sigh of relief*. The soles of my feet feel bruised, so wear shoes when you're packing.
**EDIT: My friends showed up and we got my shit downstairs and to the warehouse in just shy of 35 minutes. That's good preparation, teamwork, and a 10-minute drive. When my friend Gary saw all the huge mountain of boxes, he said, "TWO PALLETS MY AAAAASS!!" but we proved him wrong. The warehouse dude got it all loaded onto 2 pallets. It weighed 1,293 pounds (that is zero furniture but a rather lot of books). It's gonna cost me at least $790 to get it to Tacoma. God knows what the freight forwarding dude is going to charge to take it to Denver *shudder*.
2. One week before you plan to start packing boxes: Wash everything, such as blankets, towels, sofa covers, etc. There is nothing grosser than trying to pack a blanket that's covered in a month's worth of cat fur...and you can't wash it because you procrastinated too damn long and you've gotta just stuff it in a box. Vacuum as well, using the attachments to run along the baseboards, under the sofa and fridge, etc.
Also, I had my first moderate asthma attack since I was a little kid, thanks to my shitty housekeeping, dust, and kicking everything up during frantic packing...so that's how Tip #2 made it in there.
3. If you have a one-bedroom apartment, buy at least 5 large rolls of packing tape. A tape gun is worth its weight in gold. You can always save the packing tape for mailing shit you sell on eBay, or for the next time you move.
4. Unless you have a bunch of boxes in your attic that are in pristine condition...buy some boxes. I know that it goes against every DIY, thrifty bone in your body, but just pony up $15 and do it. Even if you have a stash of used boxes that you're gonna use, do yourself a favor and get at least 6 new boxes (again...one-bedroom apartment). You'll use them, I guarantee.
5. Also get a bunch of newspapers, bubble wrap, and possibly other packing materials like a roll of blank newsprint paper. I live in a town without a newspaper, and I was hella suffering while I was trying to pack fragile shit. I ended up wrapping it all in clothing...we'll see how effective my strategy turns out to be when I get to Denver and unwrap a bunch of broken shit and clothing with glass fragments in there. Yay.
Any other hints that I'm forgetting?? Now I have a mostly empty house with a few extra items that I'm going to have to get rid of.
And I also have like 30 pounds of cat hair to vacuum up, which my wheezing with stridor is telling me, and then scrub everything down. On Friday I'm going to disassemble my computer, keep the hard drive, and junk the rest of it. (I got the whole setup for $20 at an auction, so it's ancient and incredibly shitty. Can't even run Photoshop, let alone CAD on this thing). Turn in my high speed modem, get the deposit back, arrange to have my cell phone coverage sliced on July 1. I already took care of my other utilities. I have a ton of other shit scheduled for Friday as well, like taking my boss out to lunch, getting a well-deserved massage, and going out for drinks with friends afterwards. However, I feel pretty damn accomplished since it's only Wednesday...that means I have 3 days to get my apartment scrubbed in preparation for Operation Recover Deposit.
Crap, I just realized that I'm going to have to Do Something with my vacuum cleaner...like find yet another box and mail it back to my address in Denver. DAMMIT!

It's been my experience that moving is always more expensive than you think its going to be. From tape and boxes, to shipping/moving co. charges, to all of a sudden realizing that you're hungry and the fridge is in the van (and empty).
-
I moved at the end of March. The GF and I combined households and we used professional movers to help make it happen.
Boxes are absolutely worthwhile, but we found that the "moving kits" we could get from our local storage unit complex was a better value than the same from U-Haul or the big-box office supply stores. An even better deal, in my opinion, is to buy big plastic tubs from Target or Walmart or something - they hold a ton, they don't need tape, and you can reuse them ad infinitum. I spent $50 on enough to pack up my 1BR apartment, which was mostly kitchen and bath stuff because I cheaped out and moved my clothes in plastic garbage bags.
That's about it, other than weighing the time, energy and expense of moving stuff vs. the value of donating it, eBaying it, or otherwise getting rid of it. The GF is a pack rat. I'm Thoreau on Walden compared to her and her collections of old newspapers, books, board games, whatever. It took FOREVER to move her stuff.
-
People pay for boxes? What?
-

Totally agree. I have several plastic tubs & plastic crates. I have tons of stuff stored in them under my bed.
-
My tip is to work at a job where you have access to tape guns and quality packing tape. Also, 100 ft rolls of Bubble Wrap brand air cellular cushioning.
-
My tips involve not forgetting that eventually you will have to unpack the boxes. It is so hard to focus on this distant event when you are packing, but you will be happier later if you:
1. LABEL the boxes as to what is in them at least roughly.
2. Pack some boxes with the stuff you will want to unpack first - like, enough kitchenware to eat your take-out pizza on a plate and drink out of a glass; towels, toilet paper, maybe a few cleaning supplies, that sort of thing.
-
So yeah, trim down your unnecessaries before move time.
looks like that got taken care of. (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,3732.0.html)
I apologize.
-
inev. I didn't even need to click on that to know it was about pubes.
I'm still confused in regard to people buying boxes. Really? Is it not standard for business to have large cardboard recycling bins next to their dumpsters outside my local? Every major store has these where I'm from. I've never paid for a box in my life. Going to the liquor mart and asking for their empty boxes is also a good option for quality packing material.
I suppose an important tip is to pack the really heavy stuff in several smaller boxes to aid in the moving/unpacking. Like books, and cast iron pans, etc.
When it comes to moving pets, it's really important when you get to your new place to release them in reverse order of dominance. Let the least dominant of your kitties have the lay of the land first. Doing this in our previous move levelled the playing field surprisingly well.
Also, if you have a friend who works somewhere that uses dollies, borrow one. This makes everything way better. Some of the fancier ones can go up stairs pretty well too if that's an issue.
-
The little rats are coming on the plane with me. Some people ship their pets to Anchorage via cargo...but I would never do that unless they had to go to ANC for emergency veterinary care.
You know when you're a crazy cat lady when...
You get an additional seat on the airplane for your cats. That's the only way I could bring them into the cabin with me.
Also, smells, I had to buy boxes. Sure, I have some here. But it's really humid here because we're by the ocean. Even though I kept them safe and dry in my apartment, they still got mushy and weird. I had to buy some new ones. I scored a couple from the grocery store for free, but they weren't in good shape.
See, I had to take them to the warehouse, where they got packed onto pallets and shrinkwrapped. From there, they get loaded by a forklift into a 40-foot container (connex... like the kind that you see on the back of an 18-wheel semi). They get shipped to Tacoma, where my freight forwarding dude rescues it from the dock and puts it on a truck. From there, it gets delivered to my place in Denver. I paid about $1.25 per pound of freight, which is cheap compared to how much it would cost to buy all new stuff. STILL, that meant that I had to shell out nearly $1,600. Now I have $350 to my name until I sell my truck and get my apartment deposit back.
I did have quite a lot of books. But no furniture.
-
You'd need to be a skillful scrounger indeed to come up with enough boxes of the right dimensions for my books (even with the herd thinned for travel). Ash isn't kidding about the professionals either; they bomb around the office parks with flatbed pickups piled way too high with flattened boxes. Occasionally a sheet will fly off and enliven the drive for other folks as they dodge the cardboard.
-
I like using the cardboard file boxes from office supply stores for moving. They're sturdy enough to be filled with books and stack really well (as long as the books are on the bottom). They break down nicely for storage when you're done, too.
I so need to clear out my apartment of junk I don't need. I just gave up and said "move it all" last time... and I CAN NOT do that again. Dear lord. I collect useless objects like Hammer collects hangers-on. I have stuff that I haven't unpacked yet, two years later. This is why I'm dreading October, because that is when my apartment management company will say how much they love having me and raise my rent another 10 percent.
Why do I have a sentimental attachment to my LucasArts game manuals?
-
I have a luscious dream of moving into a large, wonderful home with plenty of storage and never having to move again. God. That would be lovely. I could travel, maybe get a pied à terre in NYC or Paris or something if I felt a tad flighty, but always be able to return...
Anyway, that would involve faaaar more money that I have, but it's a nice dream.
-

I am done with moving. For at least 10 years, if not more. Pending catastrophe. Five moves was enough for me. I did get mildly depressed when I realized that this is the place where my cats will die. Moving is especially horrible for pets. For each of the five moves I had the same cat (for the last two moves we also had two more cats). He's the stressed out one who was abused by a previous owner, and has hella' anxiety. He'd come up to me after each of the moves, over and over again, with this stressed-out look like "Melanie, when are we going back home? I'm scared and I don't understand why you took me away from that place I felt safe!" I'd try to comfort him, but he'd be so scared and predominantly in hiding under the couch for weeks. Only coming out to eat and even then hiding at the slightest noise. Since we've finally got a house, he's calmed down a bit. This house is his retirement home. He is 8 1/2 years old. I feel a lot of relief that I don't have to put him through the trauma anymore.
-
Tip of the day:
Do not ever use a Post-it pad for a drink coaster.
I set a glass of chilled water on my desk. Weren't even any ice cubes in the glass. I should have noticed that I had Post-it notes littering my desk with to-do lists, but of course I didn't. When I came back from my shower I cleared the stuff off my desk. My jaw dropped as I peeled up a soaking wet Post-it from the desk...and realized that it had BLED A HOT PINK square into the wooden desk. I wanted to scream. "So long, deposit!" Noooooooo!
I tried a few other cleaning products before I realized that bleach would probably lift the stain. Since I don't use bleach on my clothes, I panicked again until I realized that I had some Lysol cleaner with bleach under the kitchen sink. I poured some of it onto the desk and waited. THANK GOD the stain disappeared. I've washed and dried it several times to get as much bleach as possible out of the wood. Now I just have to pray that the bleach doesn't do any further damage beyond removing the pink Post-it dye.
I think I need to just man up and purchase some coasters. Jeez.
-
Oh, argh, Somebody nice, I sympathize. The exact same thing happened to me my freshman year of college -- I had a hot pink Post-It on my desk that somehow got some water spilled on it, and when I finally got around to cleaning off the desk when move-out day came, there was a huge hot pink stain underneath it. My father and I couldn't figure out anything to lift it, so eventually we just left the desk as it was; I never got a bill about it or anything, so I presume life went on. Still, mortifying.
-
This is what you kids get for buying into newfangled technology. I use the old fashioned yellow Post-its as coasters all the time and have never had this problem. (I actually do own coasters but sometimes they are hard to find on the desk. You know, a clean desk is the sign of a disorganized mind, right?)
-
um, yeah. Non-yellow post its are hell of crass.
when I was buying school supplies, I was in a fragile state of mind, apparently. I remember spending at least 10 minutes freaking out about non-yellow post-its, and how all I wanted was yellow ones, no I don't want a variety pack...
the only recourse was to buy a thing of like 1000 yellow post-its, as apparently they only came in two sizes: 1 pad (so, like, 50?), and 1000.
-
Different colored Post-its rule. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/tommy_ucsc10/462517758/)

When you're back down here in the lower 48, buy some old 33 vinyl LPs. Smash off as much of the black vinyl as you can, then trim and smooth everything down to just the round label using scissors and a file. Get sheets of thin cork and cut out circles equal in diameter to the album labels and glue them to the bottom of each.
Voila. Album label coasters. Be sure that at least one of them is Slayer's Reign in Blood.
After a while, when the colors run a little from the label paper being wet, throw them away and make new ones.
Just a thought.
-
WHAT
WHAT
Linnea, if you buy good LPs and smash them up, I will not invite you to my birthday party. My mom will say "what about that nice Somebody nice girl?" "no. no, mom, she is not invited." "but I thought that she was your frien--" "no. Not invited."
on a completely random note (I guess it relates to Moving?) one of my best friends is going to school with Hobot next year. Like, they have met.
...she found Hobes utterly terrifying, but awesome. Basically.
-
Linnea, if you buy good LPs and smash them up, I will not invite you to my birthday party.
Like Slayer? Anyhow, this sounds like an awesome idea. The record store in my town (every record store?) has a dollar bin, so for like 10 bucks I could have Kenny Loggins and George Thorogood coasters out the ass.
-
For that matter, you could cruise garage sales and get them there. Probably spend a quarter apiece on them.
-
Maybe that's what I'll do with the copy of Frankie Goes to Hollywood's Welcome to the Pleasuredome that I bought on a dare from the Gentleman Caller.
-
Linnea, if you buy good LPs and smash them up, I will not invite you to my birthday party.
You don't buy good LPs and smash them up. Dope. You get thrashed copies of good albums. I had a $1 copy of Odessey and Oracle by the Zombies that made for shitty listening but excellent coasting.
-
You don't buy good LPs and smash them up. Dope.
Don't be too mean - he's still very young.
-
ah, yeah. See, I was assuming you were like most of the people I know-- ie, think that LPs are worthless junk.
-
ah, yeah. See, I was assuming you were like most of the people I know-- ie, think that LPs are worthless junk.
No, see, we were all around when LPs were still the main form of music. We aren't like your friends who view them as archaic museum pieces.
-
no... actually, my friends always say "oh, cool!" Older people (my parents, other people's parents, etc) find them basically hilarious. They all say some variation of "...don't you have an iPod?"
Kind of like the reaction I get from people my own age if I carry around my CD player, actually.
-
My Ladyfriend continues to rip her LP library. She has a bunch of Entwistle she hasn't heard in a while.
-
I called inev a dope only in the most loving way.
Vinyl albums are shit, but they were better sounding than cassettes. I bought most of my music on album for the first eight years of my...music-purchasing period. Then I got a CD player for my birthday in 1986, and spent the first half of '87 working in a store that only sold CDs. So much for the vinyl.
On the other hand, you can't clean your weed on an iPod. Unless you're using a one-hitter. Does pot even have seeds anymore?
Your children will look at you funny for carrying around an iPod when they're busy downloading music directly into a chip in their cerebral cortex.
Next post = #1000. Yay me.
End of Jim's Random Thoughts For a Saturday Night.
OT: any other moving tips for Linnea?
-
Is AOL still sending free cd's in the mail? Those always made good coasters.
-
Does pot even have seeds anymore?
Not if you buy the right pot. Seriously though, nothing is better than braking up that huge joint on a Funkadelic record.
-
OT: any other moving tips for Linnea?
I believe she flew out yesterday, so it's probably going to be a little late if anyone has anything.
-
Jesus God on Christ Mountain (not sure if I made the Teodor reference correctly) did that flight ever SUUUUCK.
The assholes at our small town airport were totally assholiffic. I could not believe it. I got an extra seat to bring both cats in the cabin with me but they said that Alaska Airlines doesn't allow that.
Total bullshit. When I got to Anchorage I got a really awesome and sympathetic ticketing agent. She went and actually checked with the correct people and realized that NO, Somebody nice BOUGHT TWO SEATS AND GETS TO USE 'EM. She got me a new carrier for Milan.
The worst part was getting back into town today. I am staying with my hella awesome friend Greg, but we're confined to one large bedroom with an attached bath. Dude has some incredibly beautiful furniture that does not need to get acquainted with Lenny's claws.
Anyway, after the plane ride, Lenny got hella sick (http://Somebody nice.vox.com/library/post/emergency-veterinary-care-thank-god-im-an-emt.html). Thank god I have some rudimentary medical training. Jesus fuck. I am still shaking. He's been stable and happy for the past 6 hours but I will not leave this room. I had some leftover Dots in my suitcase, but by God I am not leaving this room until I'm 110% certain that he's not gonna die on me. The last thing I had to eat was some guacamole on Friday night and a protein bar yesterday. I am drinking tap water out of the bathroom sink. I am watching the little guys like a hawk, making sure that they are drinking and eating. God, that was terrifying. Thank God that Milan can take care of himself and eat and drink properly. Don't worry, all, I have more than enough spare adipose tissue to tide me over until I get some dinner later tonight.
I swear to Christ, I am never going to take them on another plane again. Ever. This means that I will never move again outside of the Denver Metro area as long as the little dudes shall live. That is my pledge to you, sweet Lennybruce. I don't want you to get sick again.
Plus I don't have a car yet... However, he was in such bad shape that I was afraid if I had someone come and get us and take us to the animal emergency room that he would totally decompensate and crash.
Anyway, he is okay now. Both of my cats are fine.
-
I am glad that the trip is over and both your cats are fine. I am also glad that you are fine.
-
Seconded. Good god, y'all.
-
Dear God!!! Poor Lenny :(. What a terrifying ordeal. Luckily Lenny has such a smart mom!!! It's really great that you knew what to do. If something like that ever happened to my boys, I wouldn't know what to do! I'm so glad that Lenny's recovering just fine :).
-
I'm glad I come to these threads long after the events have happened and everything is fine again.
Welcome back to the mainland, Somebody nice.
-

Thank you. It is awesome to be back. I wish I could live downtown but I just interviewed for a job in the suburbs.
I am just thankful to be back near a veterinarian again. Lenny is a fragile, delicate little guy. I dread the day that Milan needs emergency care.

You need to get him on some weights.

I had an email from my former HR manager saying that they would pay my moving expenses. I did not print it out and I don't have access to my old email account.
They just returned my receipts and said that they're under no obligation to pay.
I have $1,900 in moving expenses. I guess I can write them off but I really need the money now.
Christ.

That sucks. I hate working for an employer who is totally keyed in to the bottom line to the exclusion of all other concerns like that - and by that I mean the kind of employer who never gives a raise until you tell them you are going to walk, and never provides any benefit that they aren't forced to, and shit like that. That totally sucks.

Gah, I don't know what to do. This sucks. I hope that I can find an employer that doesn't suck. However, I'm glad that I will never have to make that kind of move again.

Do you have any friends at the company or with affiliations to the company that are still out there who could go in, sign in as you (if they haven't deleted you yet) and print it off? Take immediate action!

We finally sold our house last weekend after 3 years of being on and off the market. It's going to be a relief to not have to keep our house looking like nobody lives there when, in fact, we do.
Any of you parent types have tips specifically for moving with a toddler? Most of our life is already in a storage unit but we're more concerned about how to not let our kid be terrified in his new bedroom.
-
tip: not that I was a toddler when we moved to Charlotte, but I remember being really freaked out at how big my room seemed without any stuff in it. This was also due to the walls being white. In retrospect, my room in Buffalo Grove was much bigger, so... I don't know. kids are silly.
I am not sure how to fix this. maybe they have such a book as "Joey's New House"
Joey loved pancakes-- they were his favorite breakfast.
"Eat up quick!" Joey's daddy said. "We're moving to our new house today!"
"Oh boy!" Said Joey, "Will I have a new room and everything?"
"Yep!" Said Daddy, "you'll have a new room, and a new yard to play in, with a big tree!"
Daddy walked around the house-- he had to make sure they weren't leaving anything in their old house.
"I'll miss my room," Joey said, "but will I still see my friends at our new house?"
"Maybe Tommy can come over for dinner, and you'll see him when you go to big-boy school next year!" said mommy
um, maybe I got a bit too into that.

yeah, um, sorry. that was basically me getting into the mode of a childhood book.
I am, to return to the main subject, starting to get worried about moving in in about a month. Most of my stuff was in storage and will be dropped off at my building the day after I get in... but the stuff here will be difficult to get back. The two possible scenarios are basically:
1. I bring way too many bags on the plane, all of them filled with clothes, and have major issues getting them from the airport to school (metro? cab?)
2. my parents mail them to me, and i totter all over the place carrying big ol' boxen.
I am not sure which is more/less attractive.
the whole moving-in thing will be fun, though. new room to organize, new books to buy. I have had, at this point, three dreams about moving in-- two about getting roommates other than the guys I am supposed to live with, and one where my room was only slightly larger than my tiny cot-bed.

Deviantart seems to be full of pictures of Harry Potter characters turned into girls by spells and having sex with unchanged male characters.
I think if we could only get the aliens to judge us by what's on Deviantart, they would let us stick around, if only to see what sort of fucked up way we can manifest repressed sexuality next.

I think I saw the Harry-Potter-changed-into-a-girl on the finals of the Jeopardy! Summer Teen Tournament. Her name was Meryl or something like that, but she looked like a girl Harry Potter. My wife hated her because she told stories during the chat segment that were funny to her and no one else. I was rooting for her because she risked it all at the end of the first day and went into Day 2 of the finals with $0, against the other two's tens of thousands. That and the other two dorks annoyed the hell out of me.
She ended up winning by one dollar.

Interestingly, yes. I dare say she was a... hot nerd girl. And she was 18, which makes it okay for me to say that.

I always pitied the tall guys moving into the dorms for the first time. Its like the entire world was 5'7" in the '60s or something (when the dorms at HSU were built). The rooms was just barely, exactly the right size for me. All others had to duck into the bunks, scrunch up their legs, scoot back chairs, etc. The furniture was built by prisoners too. I think it was revenge against the society that imprisoned them or something. I have pics of my 6'3 roommate perched like a morose vulture in our common area.

my dad always talks about how, his freshman year at UMASS, he lived in the basement, on the top bunk of a triple-bunk. He had about a foot of space.
I don't remember any funny stories about how tall he was, though.
Our beds are "extra-long," which is wonderful. I miss my bed at school... something about it is much more comfortable than my "real bed." I think it's mostly the nice, thick comforter that I have.
-
Is there some kind of law that basement dorm rooms always have to be substantially less comfortable and more disgusting than any other rooms, even in the same building? I recall my freshman dorm having passable basement rooms, but every other time I've heard the phrase "basement room," it has been synonymous with "hellhole."
... no, wait, there was Currier, where "basement room" was synonymous with "huge, awesome rooms with fireplaces and crap, except the acoustics are such that if anyone in the whole basement has non-silent sex, you've got a front-row seat." Which may arguably also be "hellhole," but y'know, YMMV.

During the theatre season, I walk through two erect phalluses penetrating the ground (http://www.gov.mb.ca/iedm/archive/images/mtyp.jpg) every day. Did no one notice this? The architect who designed the building turned out to be a pedophile! Creepy!
-
They let the pedophile erect the theatre for young people - huh, imagine that.

Wow, well I'm glad to hear that the US isn't the only country who allows shit like that to happen. Craaaazy!
-
Hey Mel, did he build any Chuck Berry shit into the building?
-
Damn! I didn't know Chuck Berry was a peaedophile, so i did a google and this was the second hit on Google. NOT SAFE FOR WORK! Seriously.
What the fuck?
(edit: I came back and took the link out. Seriously. You don't want to look at that link. You could be fired on the spot for looking at that shit.)

That is a beautiful image. Tiny can.
I"m not coughing up a can until I see the picture.
-
Hey, look! I split a thread!
-
I have to heartily apologize for this derail. Most of them are ok, but this went into some dark territory.
-
Yeah... I'm really the guilty party for posting the link. I was just so shocked. I've edited it out for everyone else's benefit - any employer would have just cause to fire you if you looked at a site like that while as work, any SO just cause to doubt your wellness for looking at such a link. Just don't go there people.

to go further into the story-- my dad's "room" was not a real dorm room. it was supposed to be a storage room, which is why it was so bad. there were... I forget what they're called, they're like horizontal pillars? I want to say "stanchions," but that is not correct at all. Anyway, there was one blocking the side of his bed, so he had to climb up the side and slide up.
also one time they had a big party on the floor above, and he woke up covered in large chunks of the ceiling (some kind of plaster/asbestos) which had come dislodged.

So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time.
C'mon, man - it's canonical!

We didn't have white onions, because of the war.
