Really? Every pressed ham I've seen has been of WASP origin. Also, I was talking to a teacher from down south and astounded at how little you folk pay your educators. It's not much better up here in the True North, but still... WTF?

It is at this point that I must confess a lack of first-hand familiarity with the ways of the WASP. The remark about WASPiness was kind of intended to be a throwaway remark because I didn't want to make a post with just a link to the strip. That, I felt, would have been crass.

It is true though. In my late teens thru early twenties, the one dude I knew who liked to moon people and otherwise show his ass was the epitome of WASP. And the friends who joined him were also WASPs even though the group was racially diverse. Also, I've seen a few bare butts in bus windows in my life, and always they are the tell-tale pale white-ish pink.
Tennis is so WASPy though - you are right on that point. Which is why I so enjoyed watching Serena Williams win today at Wimbledon.

Hm. I see. Around these parts I'd probably be more inclined to assume that someone doing that is a redneck, since in my high school days, it was mainly rednecks that displayed an unnatural (for people who professed to be straight) fascination with each other's asses and the exposure thereof.

In terms of time and emotional strain, teaching is one of the most difficult jobs in the world.
Helping my lady get to the point where the state of California would let her be a teacher nearly gave ME a nervous breakdown.
Physically, of course, being a cop or a firefighter or an NFL player or whatever is more dangerous.
But physical stress is not the only determiner and the lunch is not the meal.

I make of this that you are kind of an idiot. I am highly skeptical that any public school teacher makes "upwards" of $65,000 a year. No way, no how, not in any state in the Union. Even in frigging New York City the average teacher's salary is $45,000. In the US as a whole, the average salary for a teacher with 20 years of experience is $54,000. So, no.
Also, a "half a years" work? So, early August (preparation) to late June (grades) is half a year? And, presumably, teachers just enter cryostasis for the month and a half they have off and therefore don't need to support themselves? And if you think any public school teacher works less than 50 or so hours a week, you are sadly mistaken. Furthermore, it takes more than "a bachelor's degree and a tolerance of children" to become a teacher. It's grueling, emotionally draining work that requires a bachelor's degree plus usually a Master's of Education, certification and re-certification by the state, as well as years of (essentially) temping as you wait for a job to open up.
If it's so easy, why don't you give a shot and let us know what a breeze it is, champ.

People who really, truly complain that teachers are paid too much pretty much automatically get on my shit list, or at least my "I'm never talking to you about anything close to politics again" list. I don't bust my ass working 60 hour weeks (I'm an English teacher) to have people sneer at "how little work teachers do." Jesus Christ. Even in the relatively wealthy school district that I hope to score a job in, the pay scale MAXES OUT at about 70K for a teacher with 23 years IN DISTRICT experience and a freakin' Ph.D. Those who do not have a Ph.D. but the same amount of experience in district will make less. Me, with my M.Ed., might make around 36K to start. Whoo-hoo. It's not like we lounge around, eating grapes all day, rolling in the dough, and laughing about how we've scammed all the taxpayers to land this totally sweet gig.
I want to put my foot in the ass of anybody who a) says teachers are OVERpaid, and/or b) actually believes teaching is an EASY job. Why don't you try it yourself, jackass, and tell me how "easy" teaching is?? The sheer number of things you need to constantly keep in mind while teaching, as well as the amount of time put into planning lessons, is absolutely staggering. I hate how many members of the general public seems to think, "Well, I went to school k-12, and so therefore I must know everything there is to know about teaching." HA! Not even close. It's an awesome job, being around the kiddos, but it's very demanding.

Dude, don't spout off about shit you know nothing about. Teachers do not work "half a year", they either get 2 1/2 months off in the summer, or else their time off is divided evenly around the year if they teach at a year-round school. Teachers with a Masters degree only earn about $38,000 a year. Of course, with experience and seniority you can make more. First year teachers earn less than $30,000 per year. Guess what, jackass - my twin sister, Kellichou, is a teacher. Sorry, your argument fails.
I seriously considered going to paramedic school, but paramedics only make about $37,000 a year. With my current Bachelor's degree in architecture I made nearly double that in Alaska. Firefighter/paramedics make around $50K per year.

My girlfriend will start her first year as an elementary teacher in LA at a tad under 60K.
HOWEVER, that is because (a.) she will be starting fully accredited (b.) she will be starting with her masters completed (c.) she just completed 8 months of unpaid full-time student teaching in the heart of gang territory that nearly broke us financially (d.) we are living in one of the four or five most expensive places to live in the United States of America and (e.) she will be teaching in a school at the EDGE of gang territory.
There are a lot of rural and suburban police officers who put themselves into less danger in a given day at work than my girlfriend did student teaching. And cops get to carry guns, she got to carry chalk.

Teachers hella risk their lives. Have you ever seen third graders get nasty? Steve Irwin couldn't have done it.
That's about all I can muster, except, also, 130K+/year? Yes, because there is so much summer work for teachers where they will double their salary. Teachers don't just take those three months off, they have to get re-certified in any number of things.

Hey, if a fellow wants to act as a straw man, who are we to disagree?
My wife just left the classroom after 13 years of teaching 9th & 10th graders. She worked the pay scale hard, maxing out units and getting a Master's etc. Summer school, leadership programs, curriculum development, etc etc. She was cool with all that, and kept pace with my private sector earnings for the most part. Kids were kids - some good, some so rotten she'd come home and cry - some great that actually appreciated what she did for them. We subsidized her classroom out of our own pockets to the tune of a couple hundred bucks a year.
All that, and yet the reason she left was because of the adversarial relationship between teachers and administration. Fault falls on both sides. The teachers were suspicious of anything handed down to them by principals - administrators were insufficiently supportive of their staff (not dealing with problem kids, letting harrassment get out of hand, not backing the teachers when baseless complaints were made against them), and the secretarial staff were apparently drunk with power over who got copies made, or replacement keys, or attention from maintenance. All that at a fairly highly-ranked school. Stacey wanted the school to act as a team to provide education to the kids. What she got was factional infighting where the kids were peripheral "problems" to be handled.
Or at least, it was like that often enough for her to want to get out. She just started a new job in a different county teaching new teachers how to work in teams for developing curriculum.

I really want to know the teacher's point of view of my high school. It seemed to me that they had a much better deal than the ones at public schools in Charlotte. The kids were mostly well behaved, mostly did the work... the administration was mostly reasonable.
The one teacher I have heard complaints about the administration from... got fired for hitting on students excessively? so. you know. he was lame. The new headmaster is a douche, though... totally screwing everything up, ruining the campus by getting rid of the cool older buildings... basically, lame. He's also really religious. Which, the old headmaster was... but this guy is much more in-your-face about it.

I'd like to point out that my comment wasnt intended to be malicious. I was referring to teachers in my town from my experience. It wasn't a global comment on all teachers. I vividly remember teacher's aghast that their students didn't have maids. None of my teachers lived in my town. By and large they commuted hours from their McMansions in plush northern new jersey suburbs. They sent their kids to private schools and owned summer homes on the shore. I'm aware my town is not representative of the whole, but it was a pretty dramatic difference between the lifetsyles of the working class students and their teachers. Police officers and firefighters, however, do mostly live in my town and are paid on par with other residents.

A-CAP is one of those "people who have problems that I don't share are obviously lazy whiners" conservatives. It's pretty common among the under 30 "South Park Republican" set, and it's not charming. Figure out a way of expressing a distaste for the tax system while maintaining a basically empathetic and non-judgemental attitude about your fellow human beings, it's not that hard and you'll do better at parties. I can see where living around a nutjob lefty campus like A-CAP would cause the knee to jerk a bit hard, but when talking with moderates from other places, it's you and not your classmates who comes off as being shrill and poorly informed.
Until I see some earning statistics from your "home town," you're trolling. $65k in any American public school district means you have a PHD, teach in a metro area, have been working for 30 years, and are involved in the school's administration. In any red state, not even then. $65k doesn't get you a maid, not if you have kids and any kind of adult expenses. I also know that you're smart enough to know that 1 year - 10 weeks for summer and 2 for winter does not = 1/2 year. Maybe all of your teachers had rich spouses or family money. Or maybe this is another one of those cases where the woman in front of you in the shopping line who appeared to be cheating her foodstamps suddenly becomes a representative for the entire welfare system. Or on the other side of the fence, the handful of CEOs who bankrupt their companies and walk out with hundreds of millions are seen to represent the entire field of business administration. Were all your teachers expressing these upper class attitudes or was it just the one?
I know teachers have unions and support your political enemies, and in some sort of perfect libertarian state (that's going to be a reality just about the same year as the True Global Revolution the lefties talk about -- a free society just doesn't admit utopian plans as all politics are a compromose between wildly diverse philosophies) their job would be structured differently, but you're really not going to win any favors with anyone making willfully uninformed blanket dismissive statements about millions of hard working Americans. You're not any different right now than collegiate left wingers who make dismissive remarks at "corporations" not giving a crap that in this country most corporations are three guys working out of their kitchen with a small business plan and a shakey hold on middle-class income.
Anyway, admit you gaffed and quit digging that hole.
