Title: What It Feels Like to Own an iPhone
Post by: jough on July 15, 2007, 01:12:25 am
This blog post (posted a full week before the iPhone was even released) pretty much nails it for me:

Ha - I like the last picture.  I've never wanted a cell phone... but all the other features almost make it something I want.  But it has phone in the name, so I'm conflicted.

Those are so effing cool. I can't wait to get one.

Then again, I bought one of the second-gen iPods when I was in grad school. It was retired when my crap dude ex bought me a 2nd gen aluminum iPod Nano. I still have it somewhere. I'm hoping that by the time I have enough scratch lying around to buy a ridiculously expensive phone that the iPhone will have become even more awesome than it already is.

That's my hope, anyway.

The iPhone doesn't come over here till late this year/early next year. I'm hoping it'll have 3g by then.

Does the iphone have a pussy?

No, but it seems to create a lot of them...

I enjoy my new mobile device, but because everyone else hates surfing the internet on their cell phones they assume that this new one must be bad too.

Does the iphone have a pussy?

No, but you can look at clearly defined images of pussy... or images of men or women doing things to pussy.  Eventually this new technology will lead to people being arrested for looking at porno inappropriately or sharing it inappropriately.

I've seen plenty of 20-something gentlemen on my charter flight looking at and showing off porn on their PSPs.

O_O is this something that men do frequently? "Hey bro, here's a picture of ******************. I figured that as men, we could share this pornographic image and appreciate it together. Pretty cool, huh?"

Swapping porn on a plane?  Why don't these boys just set their game systems aside and have sex with each other?  Have you suggested this to them?  I mean if they like Limp Bizkit they're already half way there anyway.

When I worked at the airport, one of the guys from another airline used to show me porn on his Sidekick. Some of the nastiest women you could find. He had interesting tastes...

Having spent nearly 36 consecutive hours on a plane, I can honestly say I'd rather watch Limp Bizkit fans have sex than the Muslim-friendly version of the Da Vinci Code.

I probably won't get an iPhone because my face is greasy and I don't like to subject electronic devices to that sort of thing. Also because I refuse to buy any modern Apple product ever.
Title: Re: What It Feels Like to Own an iPhone

Also because I refuse to buy any modern Apple product ever.

Why is this?  I used to be a rabid anti-Mac type until they put Unix under the hood, then I began coveting the Mac.  I hear that their quality control is less than perfect, hardware wise, and they're certainly not cheap, but I'm pretty certain my next machine will be a Mac.  Why the hate?  (Specifically, why the hate for Modern Macs?  Were they better back in the day?)
Title: Re: What It Feels Like to Own an iPhone

Why the hate?

Because, quite frankly, the effects of Apple fanboyism frighten me. I have nothing against their products, but the way they are marketed as something almost akin to a spiritual experience kind of creeps me out. Besides, Apple fans need me as much as they need their precious iPods. I am the eternally ignorant Windoze boor whose refusal to switch allow them to maintain their special, unique and creative iLives.

That is so noble.

I think about getting a Mac all the time, whenever the computer freezes up and I have to reboot and I lose track of what I had in the sixteen browser windows I had open.  The Technical Staff seems to think it's perfectly reasonable to have to reboot occassionally.  I say it's like if someone came into your office every couple of days and swept everything on your desk on to the floor.

But, I think it's just too late in life for such a fundamental change. Looking back I should have changed computers when I changed careers but I didn't and now I'm in too deep all over again.

May I ask what your new career is?
Title: Re: What It Feels Like to Own an iPhone
Post by: wombat on July 17, 2007, 06:14:47 pm
May I ask what your new career is?

I write stuff. Also a lot of looking stuff up on the Internet so I know who to call on the phone is involved.  And email.

I wrote stuff before too, but now it's different stuff.  So there was a point at which if I'd lost access to all my old files it wouldn't have mattered.

The thing is also, I have this whole Technical Staff at home and he doesn't do Macs.  Sometimes we have a conversation about how one of his computers runs Linux and I ask why I can't have one of those... but somehow this conversation never goes anywhere that I can remember. Maybe I black out, I don't know.

This happens to me when I start trying to become a Linux user.  One moment I'm installing the latest Red Hat distribution on a freshly formatted hard drive partition, and the next I'm sitting in the rain on the side of the road outside Portland picking gravel out of my skin and wearing a torn dress.

I'm kinda with nded on this one.  Apple seems to make a good product, but the level of fan worship is pretty distasteful to me.  Look at that cartoon that started this conversation, the dude is basically having a summer romance with his cell phone.  We've established that the iphone doesn't have a pussy, but if it did, i'm pretty sure that dude would be fuck*ng it.  I own an ipod, but I don't think it's flawless and I don't think that all other mp3 players are useless junk

I think about getting a Mac all the time

Volkswagen owners are pretty much the same way so maybe you should make the switch.

I've noticed this too. And IIRC the bug was the first car to offer iPod integration as an option. Coincidence?

Although I am surprised that no other car that I've seen has windshield wipers that slow down when you come to a red light. Come on other car makers, this is a perfectly stealable idea. Also the air vents from a Toyota Celica circa 2001 are basically the platonic ideal of car air vents and need to be installed into all other cars right now.

I want an apple so much.

mostly because my computer has hell of issues for some reason. And a lot of them seem to be things where they did a bad job integrating the software with the hardware. Plus, garageband is so cool.

of course, next time I buy a computer, I will be buying a computer rather than being given one. So, it may be unlikely that I will spring for a Mac.

I have a dubious view of the iphone. On the one hand it is a nice repackaging of things other phones have done before, but in a more expensive, less expandable format. Then one looks deeper to realize the technology is already out of date and apple has admitted that. Moslty im worried about the fact that apple thinks its no big jump to go from mp3 players to mobile communication. The cell phone market is crowded and extremely competitive, most phones are free or near free in a year after release or even new when one signs a contract. Apple has a tendency to wait years before lowering prices on anything.
I say my view is dubious because even while knowing all of this, I want one. really bad

So joughytrousers, did you get the $100 credit (http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/story?id=3575427)? Has your faith in Apple been restored (http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,136958-c,iphone/article.html)?

Wow, A-CAP is basically wrong about everything.  They're fringe benefits, not French benefits, dude.

Anyway, yeah, I haven't gotten the credit yet because no one has.  I'm not sure I'm eligible since I paid $0 for my iPhone, but if all you have to do is enter a serial number then I'll sure as hell try to get the galactic credits anyway.

I can't say I'm surprised that they'd lower the price of the iPhone, and I'm not even surprised to hear people complaining about a price drop.  I'm just surprised they dropped the price so quickly.

The reason people are complaining of course is that it makes iPhone more affordable and accessible, and therefore less "elite" to own.  I'd be happy if everyone had an iPhone (although only because I make the internet and am making iPhone-centric apps) because someone else's phone makes mine no less awesome.  Also, larger market share (i.e. more success of the product) means faster lifecycles, faster improvements, and a better product overall.

I thought the iPod 4G was about the perfect music player.  The iPod classic now bears that distinction.  The new "touch" and iPhone are more specialty convergence products, although now that even the lower end iPods play video it won't be long before every iPod is a convergence product of some kind or another and people will just expect their walkmans to get the internet.

Actually i was only wrong about the price drop. The iphone still lacks any kind of expandability and it will always be a 2G phone in a 3G world.

I despise having a cell phone to begin with...

Do I really need more ways for people to track me down anywhere at any time?

Isn't it bad enough they can already hail me by voice or crappy text message?

I have to feel guilty for not responding to e-mail EVERYWHERE and AT ALL TIMES now?

Feh on that.

but what if some lady just realized what a great catch you are and wants to have all kinds of crazy sex... and you were too much of luddite to get back to her in time? Lives are at stake here, dude. Lives of ladies who want to snuggle you.

I refused to have a cell phone for the longest time before the lady bought one for me. I imagine this is similar to the way you buy a collar and a microchip for a dog that tends to get out of your yard a lot. I have since rebelled by having the crappiest most unreliable phones ever.
I miss my ipod though and I having a sexy little piece of internet in my hand is tasty so I am waiting for the iphone to make it down here and then... we shall see.

damn, maybe it's just because I am basically a needy person, but I have only consciously rejected 2 or so phone calls in my life. Unless I am busy, I always want to talk to people.

In fact, I am probably the person whose phone calls are being turned down. Sorry!
