Title: August 21, 2007: My Fiesta Name is Pendejo
Post by: HudsonVC on August 21, 2007, 05:42:56 am
And in the follow-up, Mr. Onstad explores his love of well-crafted street food:

http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=08212007 (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=08212007)

His spring 2007 interview at Taco (http://www.lataco.com/taco/interview-with-chris-onstadt-achewood) is valuable background material. Choice quotes:

Quote
I like a taco with a base of two firm little corn tortillas, stuck together, as I imagine most legitimate tacos are. I like a hard-caramelized pastor or asada under a heavy handful of cilantro and onion. This won’t mean anything to your Los Angeles readers, but my local for tacos is El Charrito in San Carlos, at the intersection of Holly and El Camino Real. You can barely get in there at lunchtime for all the Mexicans who have been busting their asses all morning. They do buche, cabeza, lengua, all the good stuff....

... I like local places, neighborhood places, where a hot forkful of homemade spaghetti bolognese is treated less like a quivering unicorn egg and more like the tough old workhoss it is.

I like this strip much better than its predecessor.

I imagine the actor Danny Trejo working at the taco truck.

I have no idea why.

Compared to the overpriced food at FiestaMax, buying a taco at a taco truck will give you enough money to buy Lesotho or maybe Soweto.

Oh my god...I just found a site where I can locate the best taco trucks in Denver (http://denvertaco.blogspot.com/). Flippin' sweeeeeeeeeeet!

I had to look up "pendejo" on Urban Dictionary.

This one made me laugh... TWICE.

Also, I had to go to tacobell.com to look up "fourthmeal" and apparently Onstad wasn't joking.  But FiestaMax seems to be more in competition with Chi-Chis or Chili's than Taco Bell or Chipotle.

The Taco Bell by my work has so many "Fourth Meal" and "Breakfast Burrito" posters up in their windows that it's basically impossible to actually see through them.

Is Chi-Chi's still around? All the ones around here are closed. Although sometimes I still see those places with a Chili's and South of the Border combined and that's pretty amusing.

Hey HudsonVC, thank you for the quality thread starter.  It is nice to see the background juxtaposed since I'm lazy-ass and didn't want to look it up myself.

The phenomenon of talking about insane Mexican food franchises is distinctly American to me.  We don't have a lot of Mexican chains around these parts.  I get the humour, but thankfully this is something I've never experienced, and probably never will.  We've got a few non-Mexican places that totally condescend to the patron, and the shitty Taco Bell's here, and just a few authentic Mexican places.  Conversely, it reminds me of that South Park where Cartman wants to got to Casa Bonita so bad.  I don't like South Park much, but that episode sticks with me, because it makes me want to go to a place like Casa Bonita, but in real life I'd be totally annoyed.

Also, what is Pendejo?

my favorite is Carajito (little shit).

Mostly because now my family uses it as kind of a term of endearment. But, in terms of, "you beat me at Scrabble... you carajito!"

upon winning Carioca against my grandmother and brother, I exclaimed "soy el mejor carajito!" (I am the main little shit? I think?)
my grandmother thought this was pretty hilarious.

so, yeah. I love mexican food. the other day at work, I got to make this little toddler his first ever mexican food. So, um, I wish the mom had told me that before hand so I could have made sure it was really good.

Am I right that hard tacos are not authentic? I hate those things so much. How am I supposed to fit all of that stuff into a little hard taco shell?

I want to go to a real taco stand. This will happen one day.

um, it's a variant of Rummy, I think. It is a lovely game played in Argentina and Chile, and my family is addicted.

I have tried to teach my friends, but they always get pissed off and quit after a few rounds.

based on the sudden ubiquity of "dulce de leche," I am pretty sure that the Poker craze will soon be followed by the Carioca craze.

If you're one of those windows running people, there's a free version of it on Microsoft's site - here http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/outreach/dnloads/Carioca.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/outreach/dnloads/Carioca.mspx)

I've never tried it, I was just looking on the internets to find out more about it.

"Pendejo" literally means "pubic hair," but Asherdan's functional definition is correct.  I've always thought of it as "asshole."

"Carioca" is also a person from Rio, specifically someone who hangs out on the beach all day, often in a Speedo.

I'm not a carioca but I live in Rio, that's why I asked. For a while I got a little... concerned about that game's logistics, but I'm happy that it involves cards, and not STDs...

Has the question been asked, "Where are Ray and Beef going?" I seem to assume they are on the road in the desert, possibly the Southern California desert.

Are they going to Vegas? Is it a Basic time of dudes for pre-nupital partying and debauchery? Has Beef been semi-kidnapped? Is this the beginning of the Bachelor Party arc?

That would be yes (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,3885.msg99512.html#msg99512).

But I like your questions 'cause I have hopes along the same lines.

GODDAMNIT WHAT AM I GOING TO DO ABOUT MY READING COMPREHENSION. Sorry, I missed your post when distracted by the shiny proposition of slang terms being explained.

I've been told that 'cabron' is kind of a severe insult in Mexico/other Hispanic countries, is that correct?

yes. i am not sure what it means, though.

there is a fun story, which I'm sure you can piece together, about the word Trastes and my uncle.
in Chile, "Trastes" means Asses.
in Mexico, apparently "Trastes" means dirty dishes.
The situation was basically that a mexican guy said something about needing to hire someone to wash his trastes. hilarity ensues.

p.s.  when I lived in Albuquerque, there was a local DJ who went by DJ Chingaso.  AWESOME.

Oh god, Casa Bonita. It's a Denver INSTITUTION. The dudes from South Park are from Colorado and so as a Colorado native I love seeing them reference stuff from my home state.

Casa Bonita is a shitty Mexican restaurant that has terrible food and cliff divers and it's generally crazy. I think it even has its own Wikipedia entry.

Is Casa Bonita the joint where you can raise the little flag on the table for more chips/rice/beans/tortillas and such while watching a dude in an ape suit chase a "Jane" type girl and a "White Hunter" type dude up and around and through the man made mountain? And then they all swing on vines and dive off the cliff into the lagoon as part of the total escapade? 'Cause if that's the place, fuck the food, that place is awesome. They even let you go out and explore the mountain caves in between shows and you get 5 jillion kids all hanging from the roof trying to scare each other.

Friggin' Awesome

[edit]I just google-fu'd it up and IT IS!

Awesome!
Awesome!
Awesome!
Awesome!
Awesome!

oh shit I just came...

Okay, party people. We are gonna have an Achecon or TOUAMBcon or some shit in Denver, and we're goin' to Casa Bonita.

Plus I'm going to handcuff Nabu and forcibly dress him up in a Forsberg jersey and take him to an Avs game. Heh heh heh....just connected several threads there.

Ha ha!  If I had a disposable income, I'd be there.  I actually assumed Casa Bonita was a pretend place.  I really don't care if they serve stale corn chips with cheese that comes out of a pump if they have cliff divers.  And really, if it included handcuffing Nabu and double pegging Cort, how could I say no?

Exactly, when dudes call each other cabrón or güey/buey (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=guey) there's a saying that a cuckolded man grows horns that everyone can see except him. I was asking some Latino dudes that I worked with in Alaska what "que pasa, güey" meant. One of my favorite people in the world, Salvador (he's from El Salvador, survived the war and escaped to America, where he worked his ass off to get enough money saved to bring his wife and kids up. He is Buddha-like in his serenity and happiness. I love him so much, I wish I could marry the guy), paused thoughtfully while trying to find a tactful way to explain it to this clueless gabacha. He said in his trademark heavy accent, "It means...(pause)...your wife, she is having an affair."

Yes to #1, 2, and #4. However, I don't condone using firearms while drinking, so you can bring a Super Soaker or something instead of a shotgun. Maybe fill the Super Soaker with gin and do hygienic long-distance shots? Just make sure that folks are wearing goggles, 'cuz gin in the eyes hurts like a bitch.

if someone starts squirting it in their mouth and saying "did you forget and fill this one with water?" it is time to cut him/her off. That is when you know. In retrospect, we should have figured that out the first time.

CASA BONITA!  That's the name of that place I went!  It was my first time ordering Mexican food in a restaurant.  I didn't know what to get, but I'm glad I wound up with a sopapilla at the end.

I'm not so sure I'd be as entranced by the food after living in San Diego for the past few years, tho.
