Aparently The Urban Sout (http://www.theurbansoul.com/index_flash.php) is giving away free Achewood tatooos for the rest of September. I have actually been thinking about getting a tatooo for a while but as much as I love Achewood I'm not sure I want it etched onto my body for all eternity. I was thinking maybe something less dorky than a comic strip character - like maybe a video game inspired tatooo.
-
Oh yeah, all the flash is completely necessary.
-
That site has a shitload of spelling errors, grammatical errors, and typos. I would be reluctant to get ink done at a place that has such a casual attitude toward details.
Also, Trout, are you in PDX?
-
Where is their thingy about the free Achewood tattoo? I didn't see it on their website.
I am nervous about getting more ink. Also, I don't think I'd get an Achewood tattoo despite it being my favorite thing ever. I got my tattoo in 1997 at age 18, and throughout its entire life it occasionally burns intensely and tingles for no apparent reason. The skin is also raised, although I'm not sure if that's from scarring or what. I think I'm allergic to the ink. Is it true that tattoo inks have metals in them? That might be part of my metal allergy problem.
-
i want tattoos very soon. i was going to have a friend (if you're near louisville and wanting ink, i highly recommend this guy) do my first piece before i left town but i had no time. if i make it back for my birthday at the end of the month i will be getting it, a large female praying mantis over the left ribcage on my back. eventually she will be joined by a climbing male either on my right foot or somewhere higher on my leg, headed her way. then there's the solstice/equinox belt to go around my ribcage, which may be tied to a moon phase cycle, or the various planets, along my spine. i also want a lip tattoo with a greek humor (melancholy/Earth).
i guess the point is that i like to talk about myself instead of respecting the topic, and that an achewood tattoo, free or not, is not on the running list i've already compiled. what tattoos to you guys have? can i see pictures/replications?

I was thinking of getting a "Rost Beef - The Midle Cat" tattoo.

I was thinking of getting a "Rost Beef - The Midle Cat" tattoo.
HAHAH!! Tiny can to you, good sir. That made me LOL.
-
You can see pics of my tats around here somewhere. I have an ankh and a pi symbol. I want to get the four directions around my navel.
-
I've always been anti-tattoo, but I've been thinking a bit recently about getting one ruby red slipper (Wizard of Oz type) on each heel. (I'm from Kansas, so WofO holds a lot of meaning for me). So I can, you know, click my heels and go on home.
-
I have a circular piece of Celtic knotwork on my left shoulderblade (my family is partly Irish). It was done in black ink. It's small, about 3" in diameter. I got one laser treatment out of a series of four that was never completed to remove it in 2002. I never wear revealing clothing in public, so nobody sees it, so I haven't bothered to finish the treatments (I was getting it lasered off in preparation for a wedding that never happened), and I don't think I want to get it retouched because I suspect an ink allergy. Basically the thing is in limbo. It still looks pretty decent because it's rarely been exposed to the sun and only had that one laser treatment. I also don't have any photos of it. If I looked better from the back I'd take a photo in the mirror.
I was getting it removed because I figured the only wedding gown I'd be able to find was a strapless gown, which are highly popular right now. If I ever get married, I would want something similar to Diana's wedding gown (http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/july/29/newsid_2494000/2494949.stm), but obviously not as ornate and with far less fabric yardage. DEFINITELY not a 25 foot train, for pete's sake!
-
If I ever get a tattoo, it's going to be a DNA strand that starts on the back of my shoulder and then spirals around my upper arm. I'd have the bit on the shoulder as a close up of the DNA, with new nucleotides attaching, then the rest of it slowly getting smaller as it goes down.
Yeah, I'm a huge geek.
-
Also, Trout, are you in PDX?
No, I am not; I am actually in Baltimore. I just saw the link to the tattoo place off of the Achewood front page.
Also I just joined the Flickr group and noticed that someone got the rabbit ambulance tattooed on her shoulder. Was that anyone from here?
Also, oball, being a geek is awesome. Besides a video game character I've seriously contemplated getting Gödel's Incompleteness Theorems placed somewhere on my body.
-
I've had a tattoo in my brain for a few years now... a green kangaroo with a yellow Australian seven-pointed star in the middle, to go on one of my biceps.
But I've come to realize that this will never happen.
-
If I were ever going to get a tattoo, I think I've mentioned before that I would want a Purkinje dendrite tattooed on the back of my head, over my cerebellum. I'm a nerd.
That DNA tattoo sounds awesome, too.

Any reason why you're doing the Australian theme?
I met an American exchange student here last semester who was stoked to show off the new Southern Cross tattoo he'd had done in Sydney. I didn't have the heart to tell him that Southern Cross tats here are generally associated with idiotic "Aussie Pride" racists such as those seen in the Cronulla riots.

Ahh, it makes more sense now (http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/young-wear-patriotism-on-arms-legs-wherever/2007/01/23/1169518709554.html). Bogans, eh?

I did not notice the message on the front page, so this thread was a mystery.
FREE Achewood tattoos (real ink, no kidding) for the duration of September - Portland, OR - contact Ximena at The Urban Soul (http://www.theurbansoul.com/index_flash.php). A service happily provided.

The only way I'd get a Achewood tat would be if it came with Chris spending a week at my house. And then I'd throw him out after day two. Or I'd walk around saying "No new strip today? What the hell, Chris?"

My paternal grandmother was from Australia. My heritage is mostly German/Swiss, but I identify more with the Australian bit. During the Olympics, I root for the Australian teams over the American ones, and my favorite sport to watch on TV is Aussie Rules Football (which I can't get anymore... bleh).

I might be game, but it would have to be something created by him, specifically for this use. The rabmulance is neat, but I feel nothing for it. "What We Need" is also good, but I have a shirt that contains this missive. Anything currently created feels too much like advertising.
Like, maybe I should talk to Tide and see if they'd sponser me.
-
I'm going to get the entire Cartiledge Head arc on my arms and upper back.
-
you know that picture where pat has a raging erection and hes running around in leather swinging weiners? I want to silkscreen that onto my suitemate's favorite shirt. or make a lifesize poster for his door.

I just read yeswterday about a woman who got Goldenpalace.com tattooed on her forehead for $10,000 to finance her son's college eduaction. Nothing else to say here.

I read somewhere that the artists at the parlor tried their best to talk her out of it but she was determined to go through with getting it done. Pretty sad.
I'm actually slightly obsessed with really terrible tatooos. Witness the horror: http://awfultattoos.blogspot.com/
Also, I think this guy is hands down winner: http://www.wunderkraut.com/index.php/archives/2006/05/25/idiots-on-parade/
-
my ex has this (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b2/Sonic_Youth_Goo.jpg) tattooed on her hip/lower stomach area.
-
Kilgore, did you see my thread about the worst tramp stamp ever (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,3785.0.html)? That's a pretty tragic tattoo.
-
I knew a dude who had the Atari logo on his shoulder (he had something else too that wasn't as good). That's seriously bad-ass.
-
That's seriously bad-ass.
No. No it isn't.
It's pretty darn cool, but it is about as far from bad-ass as you can be.
-
j'know what would be badass??
a Rebel Alliance tattoo. (http://www.tattoosandtoys.com/images_sw_single/thm_MaliRebel.jpg)
or maybe
the triforce (http://www.bmeink.com/A61216/high/bmepb413848.jpg)
I wish I were less serious, these are both kind of cool.
-
I think this is the third tattoo thread we've done. (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2509.0.html)

A dude I knew who was a Marine, a biker, and a gigantic Trekkie got the Borg claw insignia tattooed on his bicep. It was a pretty good collision of interests.
-
rumjay, I had a friend with angel wings that spanned both shoulder blades and down her ribcage on both sides, which was gorgeous, but she said of all the ink she had had done (she was a work of art) the ribcage area was definitely the most painful. Just a heads-up.
I have a thing where I think tats are sexy but I have never been able to come up with something I could commit to long-term. The best one I have seen in this respect is the one Pedro's best friend has on his bicep, which is a portrait based on a photograph his wife took of he and his son walking hand-in-hand on the beach when his son was 3 and they lived in Florida.
Okay, it sounds cheesy, but it is actually really well-done. He wants to get something similar done for his other kids and his wife but he hasn't found the right pictures yet.
He also had a supremely bad tattoo he did himself on his ankle while he was fucked up, it was a 'shroom. But he had it covered up with some kind of skull and snake dealie. That one is on his calf.
I always said I was going to get an "exit only" sign just above my tailbone, but that was mainly a joke.
Everyone has seen the Dragon c*ck, right? NOT SAFE FOR WORK (http://www.capohedz.com/typebrighter/uploaded_images/dragon-717577.jpg).
Let's take a poll, ladies (and gents, those that swing that way). Would you let this thing come within six feet of your naughty bits? I'm willing to bet this guy hasn't gotten a blow job since he had this done. Who could keep a straight face?
-
Plus you'd be very disappointed when it didn't taste like a stick of rock.
-
I would basically never get a tattoo... I can't deal with pain, I can't deal with fear of infection, I would be entirely afraid that whatever idea I got put on my skin would be an idea that I no longer believed in five or six years later.
Also, I have some of the OCD, so if the thing put on my body was assymetrical, it would drive me completely fuck*ng crazy.
A small wooden cross bound together by silver strands right between my shoulder blades would be kinda nice but I reckon people would believe that... like... you know, I was heavily into Fundamentalist Christian Mystic Endtimes Bullshit instead of just really liking what The Guy had to say about things.
A small symmetrical version of the X-Men "Phoenix" logo in the same place would be equally cool but... again... people would think that it was just about being a comic book nerd as opposed to my enjoyment of the IDEA of the mythical Phoenix, just seen through the eye of American geek culture through the Phoenix logo.
Really, though, there is a heavily modified symmetrical and wordless version of the Little Falls Mets logo I have in my head that... if I had to get a tat, that's what I'd get and... again... put it right between my shoulder blades.
The idea of all the things that I associate symbolically with that baseball logo... as the dreams which freed me as a child and yet the burdens I carry from my youth as an adult... I could probably have that on my body until I fully decomposed and the meaning would always be important.
But again:
I hate needles
I'm nervous about infection
I'm ambivalent about the idea of associating myself with ritual scarification
-

I have Rabbit Ambulance on my left leg. I think mine looks better.

She (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katzen) might consider it.
The main problem would be every time he's about to cum, he probably screams "the dragon's breathing fire! The dragon's breathing fire!" Also, there's probably a lot of talk about the dragon going into his cave and depositing treasure.
-
Or how about this chick? http://www.capohedz.com/typebrighter/uploaded_images/pusstat-744878.jpg
And linnea/Somebody nice: Yes, I did read that thread when you posted it (I'm a recovering lurker) and was simultaneously amused and horrified.
-
Not safe for work! Not safe for work! Gaaahhh!
-
Tattooing your heart and lungs would be pretty hardcore.
You just whip that shit out and people will gladly hand over their lunch monies.
-

Clearly, this woman and the dragon wang guy are the perfect couple.
I love when the internet comes full circle. It's a circle of life. And disturbing tatoos.
-

Tiny can. Intolerant people really irritate me. Some dude that I was talking to on eharmony started bashing Christianity really heavily and I got really offended. Yeah, the intolerant Christians piss me off and I hate them, but dude...you're acting just as self-righteous as they do. It was ironic that he refused to see the connection between his behavior and the people he was bashing.
I also love what The Guy had to say about things.
-
I already have a litany of what might be considered to be "questionable" tattoos....I have the PBS logo, the word "RENO!" in big block letters across my chest, and the logo for the long-gone band Jawbreaker, among other things. My brother has a tattoo of two neon unicorns destroying a city with laser beams across his stomach, and another tattoo of a human skull with a unicorn horn coming out of it with the word "ADVANCED" underneath.
With that being said, we are both very seriously considering taking a trip up to PDX to take advantage of this offer, provided they do quality work.
I would get a fairly predictable picture of Philippe with "HUUUUGS!" above it. My brother is considering a full tribute to the GOF.
For those of you who elect not get inked, how do those sound...from an unbiased perspective? any better ideas?
-
I'm not sure, but please inform the story behind "RENO!" Curiosity is burning me up.
-
I just really like Reno. I used to live there, and contrary to popular belief, its a great city.

MH, please post pics of the rest of your tattoos. I love seeing other peoples' ink and stories behind them. Also your brother's tattoos, if possible. As a huuuugs! and Philippe fan, I am heartily in favor of your tattoo proposal.

Are you yelling REEENNNNOOOO!!! in that picture?
-
Is this idea crazy: A drawing of a can of spinache from Popeye (properly Thimble Theater) on my (nonexistent) bicep?
Only current tattoo: small drawing of a pocket knife, done to look like an R. Crumb drawing (not a particular one, just his style) and to evoke the ending Rushmore (like Max I get myself in trouble having too many interests / hobbies at once)
-
I really want ink, and I've known for years exactly what I want. I won't go into specifics right now, because it's still only a possibity on paper. I'll be general: Two fairly prominent tats depicting symbols of my religion, in places where you can't see them unless I have my shirt off. I worked out the symbolism, and I'm especially proud of my ideas for the placement. I haven't done it, though, nor do I think I will anytime soon, because I don't want to make a Permanent Decision while I am in the mental state in which I am currently. Also, I am really unhealthily obsessed with quality, especially in a Permanent Decision, to the point where if I had the cash, I would literally scour the world looking for the right artist. The way my brain works, I literally can't imagine anyone finding satisfaction with someone in their local area.
That lady's pu$$y was scary. Why... why would someone do that? Why? My brain hurts. I had to look at a regular pu$$y for a while right after, to cleanse my brain, if you will. I think I'm gonna be ok now. As for that guy, I didn't think that a c*ck tattoo was even possible. The c*ck is a very vascular area. Wouldn't there be bleeding, so much that it wouldn't be medically advisable? Especially with that amount of coverage. Yikes.
Also, what if it became a Thing to call Him The Guy? I, too, totally dig what He said, but don't like all the trappings of contemporary associations with that particular crowd sometimes. With the right understanding behind it, The Dude or the Man or the Guy as a moniker would be heck of respectful. With the right understanding behind it, provided.
Also, Mr. Trout, you have introduced me to a totally novel concept: tattoos of math equations. I am so behind that. Really. I mean, besides a person just basically liking math, it totally makes sense to put an immutable law of the universe into a Permanent thing. You can break up with a dude/lady, but math is forever. (Except for some areas, of course.)
-
a guy on the floor below me has a pretty well-done DNA tattoo.
it's around his calf, though, which seems foolish.
-
My favorite tattoo that I've seen on a stranger, was a guy who had a realistic looking zipper tattooed on the back of his neck, like he's slippet into his human suit and zipped up. I liked that.
-
My aunt's boyfriend has a dude mowing a lawn on his skull, because he is bald.
My grandmother doesn't like him very much and is incredibly vocal about this.
My aunt is in her middle-fifties.
-
My aunt's boyfriend has a dude mowing a lawn on his skull, because he is bald.
I used to opine that if I was going to go bald (especially fringe-y male pattern style) I would shave it all off and tattoo a snake coiled around my cranium up there. To my Mom's relief, I am showing little sign of losing hair into my late '30s.
-
I had a friend who said he was going to shave his head and tattoo "666" on the crown of his skull, the better to win hellacious bar bets.

I like how we're a "rogue forum" now.
Although I guess we really are. Huh.
-
Onstad: "We have a high number of readers in Portland due to the large amounts of drugs that are constantly being consumed there."
I'm pretty sure a lot of us who don't live in Portland also consume drugs, but maybe just not on the massive scale required to get free tattoos.
-
But the idea of being a rogue forum is pretty rad, right?
It harkens back to being little kids and pretending we're the Rebel Alliance with broomsticks.
"Vvvvwhoom, vvvvwhom, I'm a Rebel!"
-
I'm not sure... are we a forum that is rogue or a forum that is populated by rogues?
Actually, never mind. They're both charming in their own ways.
-
Wow, I've never been a rogue anything. Cool.
-
I like how we're a "rogue forum" now.

So does that make us rogue's in the style of Locke from FF6 or does that mean that we're actually just tiny @ signs walking around trying to avoid capital Ls?
-
It means we can sneak attack for extra damage.
-

It means whatever you want it to, man. You're rogue.

Don't forget to roll the Tragedie. Otherwise you can't be a fully realized rogue.
-
Can'd for Tragedie reference.
-
hell no. My rogue is a Rogue Drow, just like Drizzt, but he uses a magic bow, ShadowSting, rather than the two scimitars. He's married to a beautiful drow woman (I will create this woman by putting a picture of a famous actress in black and white, and then inverting the colors), but he is cast out, and escapes to the overworld. Now he's leading an expedition into the Underdark to kill all the evil drow in one huge epic battle, so that he can rescue his wife and infant son. Also, Drizzt is coming because he recognizes that my rogue is stronger than him.
Also, Elminster is in our party.

Dude, my min/maxed cleric build is so going to own your ass.
Now pass me the pizza and another can of Mountain Dew.

At least they spelled the URL right.

It's like we've wandered into the Order of the Stick message board by mistake.
-
no. the one time I played d&d everyone was incredibly concerned about avoiding ripping any known character or archetype off. like... extremely.
-
I think that getting an Achewood tattoo would be innocuous enough. I'm just waiting to see if someone mentally unhinged and uncreative enough is going to get Achewood sleeves, like when I saw a crazed Jhonen Vasquez fanboy at a Denny's in Denver once (he had sleeves of Johnny The Homicidal Maniac tattoos and was crazier than a shithouse rat).
-
It's like we've wandered into the Order of the Stick message board by mistake.
Not quite. We still have way fewer rules, and must more aesthetically pleasing signatures. Plus, our ladies are hotter.
-
Oh man, the Order of the Stick fourms. The rules there remind me of Pat's rules (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=09092005) for looking at his giraffetank.
OotS is a fantastic comic, though.
-

A friend of mine linked me to the comic several weeks ago, and out of curiosity I looked at their page describing the forums. Pat-like indeed! Crazy. I can't imagine setting up such a tightly regulated forum, but apparently the author thinks it's necessary because there are a lot of underage kids who enjoy his work and he doesn't want to tarnish their innocent little minds by letting people say bad words in his forum.
-
That raises the chicken-egg question: which came first, the draconic rules or the desperately weird forum population? I would imagine the population, but hell, even with the rules in place, they're still there. I can only imagine some sort of evolutionary arms race of rules and idiocy, like those salamanders that just keep getting more poisonous and the predators that just keep getting more poison-resistant: a terrible equilibrium, survivable for native inhabitants but deadly to outsiders.
-
The Worth1000 forum is equally insane but I do appreciate some of their filters. Particularly turning "first post" into "I am attracted to little boys"
-
I wonder about the OOTS author. He often alludes to his crippling medical condition but never specifies what it is. What could it be? Why won't he just come out and say it?
-

I had to go check out Order of the Stick to find out what it was. Huh, a D&D themed webcomic. Ok.
I'll take your word on the highly regulated nature of the forums.
Why, however, would you think it odd that D&D players are attracted to a forum with many odd and stringently detailed rules? These are people who require three hardbound volumes of niggling regulations in order to play make believe.

Yes, it's nerdy. This (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0327.html) is probably my favorite, and it requires no knowledge of D&D rules or anything.
-
That was pretty funny. I liked the Rubik's cube crack too.

He's probably a werewolf, like Professor Lupin.
