I would definitely end my life in dramatic fashion if a random person i googled never answered my email. Also, this smells of PBF.

I do believe this sets a new bar for the Saddest Thing... one high enough to drive a bus under.

I dunno, there are sadder. I'm... yeah, this is kinda pseudo-PBF-y.

The fear that a woman we had/have a crush on was trying to contact us, gave up and has died or married or has in some other way been put in a position where she can no longer have sex with us is pretty much THE number one fear of nerdy guys, other than death, of course.

Our mothers all said that when we were older, all the girls would see what catches we were and... even if happily partnered off... we are desperately afraid that maybe the girls DO see us as catches now and that we're missing out on all kinds of crazy sex.

The paradox being that if we were ever really gonna be dudes who got all kinds of crazy sex, we were going to have to have been it when we were young, as most of the quality ladies are getting into a monogamous mode by their late twenties and...

Y'know, that's the only time a nerdy guy is ever gonna be seen as a non-crap dude, is when she's lookin' for a dude to be with for decades and so on.

That was the entire point in the first place.

We know much interior torture via this paradox and the imaginary stuffed animals nail this angst perfectly.

Ladies and men who have had a lot of crazy sex in their times will probably go "meh" to this strip.

Men who have basically only known sex in two or three monogamous relationships will love it, because it has pointed out A Truth to them.

I find myself in the second camp.

Thing is, the Saddest Things are usually funny.

This thing, I am struggling to find the funny.

recently, I saw the film Pretty in Pink.
in it, the main lady's friend is so desperate for her recognition that he sings Try a Little Tenderness to her in a record store. She is unmoved.
At the end, he has to be a Good Guy and encourage her to date the rich football player.

if that kind of shit can't even work in movies, what hope do any of us have? I am oversimplifying the plot, probably.

WHAT HOPE DO WE fuck*ng HAVE.

um, basically the Junk Folder Hypothesis is my deepest dream.

Maybe I'm just old, but if I found that stuff in my junk e-mail folder I would be momentarily fascinated by it before coming to the correct conclusion that some crazy-ass bitch was obsessively e-mailing me and now she won't anymore and, in the long run, it's bad for her and not bad for me.

I doubt that she threatened Cornelius with suicide...I think she was just overwhelmed with despair after the multiple failures and offed herself. Of course, that's sheer speculation because we can't see the contents of the emails. But yeah, probably not the most balanced person.

I think it's a nice touch that, assuming that today's strip is set round about today's date, all this correspondence must have been just sat there, unread, for well over a year.

That would explain why she didn't see the entries on The Dude & Catastrophe, look it up in the phone book, and just call the bar.

The ichthyologist and I finally disagree. Not getting the 'PBF-y' references, I loved this.

Of course, it could just be that it involves Cornelius, too.

Do you mean you don't see how it's like PBF or you don't know what PBF is? If it's the latter then we mean Perry Bible Fellowship (http://pbfcomics.com/), a comic that's nothing like its title would imply.

You know what's jumped the shark?  The damn "Jump the Shark" phrase and the acidic anti-creator internet forum attitude that goes along with it.

Achewood is Peanuts, it's going to be around for decades and it's going to have distinctive moods and tones that vary as time goes on.  Did Schultz jump the shark when Charlie Brown lost the unibrow and the bitterness got replaced with longing?  Nah, shit just changed.  It's a negative thing to be ripping apart a serialized work piece by piece.

This was funny.  It fits Cornelius' character well.

As to PBF... the running characteristic about PBF is that in 3 panels a world is created and then destroyed with savage irony.  This sort of fits, but it's pretty different.  And since when is being PBF-y a bad thing?

The films of Quentin Tarantino.

Dialogue's well-written, the action well-directed but... man... the content is just a barrage of hipper-than-thou cultural references and a sexual fetishization of gun violence that spins the dial ALL the way around from serious to parody to completely-fuck*ng-creepy-serious again.

Meh.

I can't think of anything else to call overrated that doesn't sound either pompous or trite, or both.

Maria Von Stutz and Leon Sumbitches represent two sides of the single great tragedy of electronic mail.  The true cost of spam can't be measured in lost productivity, nor by the simple nuisance it causes.  What spam really costs us is our innocence.

...At least, it would, if people like them ever actually existed, which they obviously don't.  Everyone knows that.  But still it lurks in the backs of people's minds: What if?  I suppose it's not unique to email, though.  Theoretically, there could always be some poor guy out there trying to run an honest shell game, but nobody will trust him.

I still have my own spam filter on training mode, but that's more a consequence of its occasionally tagging stuff I get from listservs than its potential to thwart online romance.  Either way, it solves that particular (hypothetical) problem for me.  It also makes it possible for me to pick out my favorite subject headers from the genuine spam and save them in a separate "Spam Poetry" folder before deleting the rest.  Anyone else try that?

It is not right that is overrated.

It is being right when no one else will see/accept/admit that you are right that is supremely overrated.

The cold comfort of knowing and everything is going to shit anyway because they don't listen?

Ain't comfort at all.

Sex is definitely the most overrated thing ever.

Sex, like money, only feels overrated when you can get some. When you can't get any sex it can be the most accurately rated item ever.

I used to do that, but then the quality of my spam subject lines plummeted and it would have actually required some effort so it didn't seem worth it anymore. Though Gmail's clip thing did allow me to see this gem from the body of a recent c*ck-enlargement offer:

"Princesses always laughed at me and even fellows did in the federal john!"

It's a widespread problem.
