Getting a new car, and thus swapping my MP3-CD and external MP3 player-capable car stereo for a factory jobbie that only plays regular CDs has had a profound effect on my listening habits. Specifically, I don't listen to podcasts with the regularity I once did, and as a result I'm not up to speed on what's new these days.
I got 20 tracks to download on eMusic, and before I go after back catalog-type stuff... anyone got suggestions?
-
it horrifies me that it is my job to do this and I can't think of anything off the top of my head.
-
OK, I suck at writing about music, so here are some eM albums that I've been listening to a lot lately.
- 1990s - Cookies. Poppy and fun. Start with Risque Pictures
- The 1900s - Plume Delivery. Similar name, way different sound. It's an EP and a good way to use up stray tracks.
- Asobi Seksu - Citrus. Goodbye is way too good of a song for it's own good. Seriously.
- Beirut - The Flying Club Cup. This is an advance release. I'm not a big Beirut fan but it seems that everybody else loves them.
- The Cat Empire - Two Shoes. Incorporates lots of different styles. Sly and Lullaby are standouts.
- The Cliks - Snakehouse. I think Smells already recommended this band. They're coming to Jammin Java this month. Oh Yeah is the single.
- Elk City - New Believers. Mellow, I guess. Los Cruzados was a free daily download and hooked me.
- Five O'Clock Heroes - Bend to the Breaks. Again, fun. Good driving music, especially Run to Her.
- Herbert - Scale. This was on a bunch of "best of '06" lists. I like Moving Like a Train
- Imperial Teen - The Hair the TV the Baby and the Band. I think the SO and I like this the best of all my eM downloads this summer. I like Room With a View the best.
- My Teenage Stride - Ears Like Golden Bats. The album title is too good not to like. Following the same logic To Live and Die in the Airport Lounge is the best song.
- Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. I assume you know of Spoon already.
- Voxtrot - s/t. They also have several EPs if you you're trying to use up leftover tracks. I particularly like Your Biggest Fan from the EP of the same name (I used to be your biggest fan but now I find that you're slipping in my estimation).

Have you listened to Neil Young's "Living With War" album?
I gave it a second chance and I love the hell out of it. Took a couple listens to sink in, like so much Neil Young.
Wilco's "Sky Blue Sky" is insanely good, not just the parts on car ads. The newest Modest penis has a lot going for it.
Everyone should be made to listen to Elliott Smith's "Basement on a Hill" album at least once a month.
Do not overlook the value of having some Nine Inch Nails on hand. Just because they play it in Hot Topic in the mall doesn't necessarily mean that a thing is bad, a thing can be of value despite that fact and most Nine Inch Nails is of value.
I've been trying to start My Novel That I Was Never Gonna Write and it's all been Neil Young, Wilco and Nine Inch Nails for the writing.

I was meaning to ask, isn't there a new New Pornographers and is it any good? I think I heard a tiny bit of it somewhere and didn't like it. It seemed too derivative or something. I would hate to buy it and not like it - I loved the last two so much.

There is. (http://www.last.fm/user/CortJstr/journal/2007/08/24/508116/)
There's just the album, or for a few dollars more you can get the Executive Edition which comes with 3 blanks CDs.
No, really.
They're releasing stuff online into a password protected area that you can later burn onto the CDs. There are demos and B-sides for disc 2, a live album that they haven't actually recorded yet because it will be from the tour that's currently happening, and a disc of videos and pictures from said tour.

Downloading music on places like mininova (http://www.mininova.org) is easier than you'd think. For FREE, and all you need is a torrenting client, like uTorrent (http://www.utorrent.com/). Last.fm is a wondrous place to get music recommendations and to hear new stuff, plus we have a TOUAMB group all up ins (http://www.last.fm/group/Underground+Vinyl).
Recommended:
1. Uncle Tupelo. I have their entire discography, but a great place to start is their compilation, "89/93" (Jeff Tweedy from Wilco used to be in this band)
2. Son Volt. They also have a retrospective, but I recommend "Okemah and the Melody of Riot" as a great introduction. "Trace" also.
3. Upon Teodor's suggestion, I'm listening to The Arcade Fire, and I like them a lot.
4. Sigur Ros, who was recommended by someone on another board, and I really enjoy them.
5. Iron & Wine. I'd start with his latest, "The Shepherd's Dog"
****EDIT: 2222 posts! Wooo!

lately I have been listening to a lot of James Brown. you can never have too much James Brown.
Um, I can also recommend the MGMT's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w7JthgTMHDU) new album, on Columbia records. they are pretty cute and fun. Kind of an 80's pop feel? I have only heard the first few tracks of the album, but, they're awesome live. lots of synths and cool electronic beats. I do not understand why their new Major Label LP doesn't sound as good as their old indie one that I got like 2 years ago, but... my sense of musical aesthetics is kind of pretentious I guess. It's the same songs... but not done as well. I feel. Maybe I could send you the old one over the net?
I really enjoy Ghost of the Russian Empire (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTZiqblT430), but they are probably just a huge Radiohead ripoff. I still think they're cool, though. They have an EP out, and I think an LP coming out soon.
Lately I have also been listening to some John Fahey. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lP3hY8HQFSE) His America is amazing. Really great guitar playing-- they call his style "American Primitive," a mixture of old folk and folk blues styles, lots of weird tunings and twangy open strings. I haven't heard any of his later, electric stuff, but I'm sure it's really awesome.

Some stuff I have been listening to lately:
Devendra Banhart: Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon - This album is nothing short of amazing. I was a fan before, but after listening to this and seeing him last night I am a full-fledged zealot. The man is incredibly creative, you can hear the immense joy he gets from creating music in every track, he is an amazing showman and he has no inhibitions. Notable tracks: Seahoss, Lover, Carmencita, The Other Woman
Camera Obscura: Let's Get Out of This Country - This has been out for a while but if you haven't heard it yet by all means get it. I used to think they were a poor man's Belle and Sebastian but this CD has not only changed my opinion of them, but has also stolen some of my love for their Scottish twins. This is, IMO, better than B+S's latest effort.
The Ditty Bops: Moon Over the Freeway - I was turned onto this pair by Paul's lovely photos of this lovely photogenic duo. Great harmonizing and some catchy lyrics. A bit inconsistant, but the title track is worth the purchase price Also the track Short Stacks from their self-titled is great.
Edit: Limited Time Offer - I see eMusic hasn't gotten a hold of Devendra's latest CD yet so here it is: http://tiA-CAPrl.com/2racvf
I'm going to have to take this down probably tomorrow so grab it while you can.

For real. I'm rockin' a This is a Man's World ringtone.
Just got a new ipod last week, 80 gig classic (was corrupt and I had to exchange it today for one that worked) but I don't know any new music. Been listening to Dexter Gordon, Squarepusher, Oscar Peterson, Wolfmother, Adrian Belew solo and lately been going back to the usual staples, Ray Charles, Funkadelic. Ya know. No big surprises.
-
Some good suggestions, peeps, thanks. How I wish eMusic carred SubPop's shit! I knew there was a new Iron & Wine coming out, but didn't know it was actually out, so I'm gonna have to run and get that.
I rounded out my eMusic allocation for the month with a bunch of live stuff, including Broken Social Scene, Iron & Wine, and My Morning Jacket. The latter is a show at the 9:30 Club in 2002, and I may have actually been there. If it's the one where they opened for Doves.

I cannot stop listening to this band:

New Riders of the Purple Sage. Psychedelic, drug-oriented country from the 1970s. They're really fun.
-
this band called Bird and the Bee have an EP which I enjoy so far. The song I like that I have heard is Polite Dance Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg_cEOK6ho8). The vocals on the real version sound better.
I also like the new album by Les Savy Fav, the Kevin Drew solo album, and the new Stars. But I have not heard all of the tracks on each... this will be remedied soon when I get copies of them, instead of hearing single tracks on friend's radio shows.
-
Oh man. Purple Sage.
My uncle who's never been quite right since Vietnam and smokes more weed than an entire tourbus of rap singers, they're his favourite band.

I heard their song "Again and Again" somewhere and it's become a favorite of mine. They're on tour at the moment, but playing nowhere near you or me yet.
-
was it on Grey's Anatomy? Don't be embarrassed.

NRPS?
Badfinger :: The Beatles
NRPS :: The Grateful Dead

It figures that not one week after I finally cave and buy the New Pornographers' Challengers at Best Buy, it finally comes out on eMusic. Fuckers.
I also picked up Iron & Wine's The Shepherd's Dog, and I find it fan-fuck*ng-tastic. The New Pornos album has some good moments but seems somewhat uneven (of course, I've only listened to it twice so far, so I could change my mind).
Good pickup on eMusic: Nicole Willis & the Soul Investigators (http://www.emusic.com/album/Nicole-Willis-The-Soul-Investigators-Keep-Reachin-Up-MP3-Download/11028876.html).
-
I've been listening to the "Illinois Street Lounge" station on somafm pretty much non-stop lately. It describes itself as "Classic bachelor pad, playful exotica, and vintage music of tomorrow." I can't really describe it any better than that.

So far I have only heard Boy With a Coin, which I liked very much. Recommend any other tracks, or is the album better as a package?

Oh, dude!! You cannot go wrong with Iron & Wine. I have Our Endless Numbered Days (highly recommended), The Creek Drank The Cradle (also highly recommended), and the newest one, The Shepherd's Dog (also highly recommended), which where the single from Boy With a Coin came from. The song BWAC puts me into a hypnotic trance. Sam Beam is a genius.
-
What she said. The whole album's pretty good. I believe my favorite track is "White Toothed Man."

That is such a great song. Tiny can.
-
Oh, I am already a big fan of Mr. Beam, I just hadn't checked out anything from his new album yet. However, on your recommendation, I now have the full Shepherd's Dog album. I will allow it to seep into my gray matter fully over the next few days. But for now, my faves will remain Jezebel and Freedom Hangs Like Heaven.
-
I need to give Our Endless Numbered Days another spin or ten. While I already love "Each Coming Night" (it was on a mixtape a college friend gave me), the rest hasn't quite sunken in yet. I suspect it'll be like In The Aeroplane Over The Sea was, where I listened to it about six times with no particular opinion and then suddenly the "love this album" switch flicked on inside my head.
-
I am pretty overwhelmed by how awesome this song is. (http://musicforants.com/music/heyhey/03%20Can%20I%20Get%20Get%20Get.mp3)
Maybe it's that I have only heard it in my friends' car, and they were all singing along and dancing.
maybe it's that i associate it with the girl I like.
but this song is so good. i want to spread the love.
A baby girl in those baby ******
A come over here and take a second chance
Take a second chance on me
Cause I know you want to dance
But you say, I don't do that kind of thing
Say what!? I don't do that kind of thing
Why not!? I don't do that kind of thing
And you say, I don't do that kind of thing-- okay!
CAN I GET GET GET TO KNOW NA KNOW KNOW YOU BETTER BETTER BABY?

Here is a song I talked about the other day. I like it.

also: lately I have been pretty into The Cardigans. Pop music made by metalheads, one of whom has a degree in jazz composition, and a woman with a voice like an angel? So good.
My band is going to cover Love Fool in this battle of the bands thing, and it's going to be the greatest thing ever. We are rapidly going from an angular noisy post-punk thing to... this crazy new-wavey thing with keyboards and covers of Love Fool and stuff. I like the idea of playing music that people will want to dance to, as contrary as this style is to almost all of the music I like.
if you don't know what song I mean, you have led a sad life. This is it, but the audio quality is not great. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddT2QmVnJiQ) The only parts our version lacks are the backing vocals and the really distorted guitar part. The keyboard arpeggios are played on guitar. And... our vocalist isn't as good, but, you know.
-
Love Fool is a violation of the Geneva Convention. It goes beyond "Ear Worm" into the realm of Tactical Offensive Weapon.

A song so dangerous, it almost destroyed the band that created it.

I'm grooving to Anthony Hamilton. His smokey, soulful voice makes me want to have make-outs all day long. Tracks I recommend: Lucille (a cover of the old country classic), I'm a Mess, Southern Stuff.
