Title: Huge Decision
Post by: Arachno-capitalist on October 23, 2007, 07:01:02 pm
I am currently deciding whether or not to transfer back to my old college, Hampden-Sydney College. I came to A-CAP last year because I thought the A-CAP degree would be worth its weight in gold after graduation. The problem is that I gave up the place where all of the best memories of my life took place. I gave up my friends, I gave up the teachers who changed my life. My grades at A-CAP are below what they were at HSC and Ive sunk into the deepest depression, last year coming close to the end of it all. I had tossed around the idea, hypothetically, of going back to HSC. However, now it seems like something that is on my mind everyday. I have until Dec 1 to apply of transfer. I don't know if theyd overlook of performance here and accept the fact that I made a wrong decision (given the kind of people who work there I think theyd be kind and forgiving enough to forgive my error. After all they readmit honor code violators, etc). Whether I stay here or go back, I will still have 2 semesters of college to go. HSC is significantly cheaper than A-CAP as well. Any suggestions from you folks?

Go back to your old school. Read your message and pretend someone else wrote it. It couldn't be clearer. Also, ditto what Ash said.

I used to be an undergraduate student advisor, so this is a professional imaginary internet person opinion.

The location your degree is from may matter for your first job out of college.  If they're deciding between the kid just out of Harvard and the kid just out of Commuter State Tech U., guess who's going to get the job.

Beyond that, once you're out in the real world... it's really not that important.  What you actually, you know, do in your work life will go much farther toward establishing your professional credibility than where you got your undergrad degree from.

Agree with the prior fake Internet friends:  if your total life experience is going to be enriched by going to Hampden-Sydney, then go back there dammit.  You'll have the rest of your life to look back on college; don't let that look back be one of regret.

Also: Clay. Clay goes there.

No brainer.  I've got a great job at an industry leader - and I went to school at Humboldt State University (which is a great great school, but I bet has most of you going "Where?".  Look it up.).  My first job out of school (other than the T-shirt factory to pay bills) was with a start-up run by a friend's dad, which lead to bigger and better things within 2 years on the strength of the recommendations I got there.  I think you know what to do - the question is, will you change your username to HSC if you do?

I know wher Humbolt is, that is for sure.

it is where some of the best weed in the country comes from.  I know a guy who knows a guy, and, well, that is good.

Go to whichever of the reasonably-fruitful options makes you happiest... and then let the cards fall as they might afterwards.

Don't make any dumb choices, of course, but if the options are roughly even in most other ways, a good tiebreaker is always whichever is the more pleasant temporary diversion on the path to the grave.

If most other things are even, go to the place where you'll have more joy for a year of your life.

Yeah A-CAP it sounds like you want to go back and unless you really think the quality of your education is going to suffer (and it sounds like it's suffering anyway) it probably won't be a bad idea.
But you totally have to change your name.

Hrm.  With my recent travels, all I can say is that leaving a place does not leave depression behind.  I found myself far away from all my personal problems, with numourous dream-job style job offers but still went back to my hotel and felt like hell... so sad, so disenchanted.  So, I don't know.  Even if the depression feels like it's tied to a certain place, it's actually something you carry inside you.  Though it does sound like the situation you're in now triggered it, so who am I to say?

No brainer.

I can't believe I used that phrase.  There's a radio commercial that bugs me that uses it.  If I start using "..in the history of mankind" regularly, I'll have to rethink my position on subliminal advertising.

Dude, you need to stick it out at A-CAP.  You do not want to be the dude that graduates from HSU.  That is just crass.

You mean HSC?  I'm the dude from HSU.  It has nothing to do with weird con-man on Hillary's speed dial.

Go back to HSC.  In five years, nobody is going to give a fuck where your degree came from.

Go back to HSC.  You are young and deserve to be happy.

Go back to HSC.  If you can't get a good education at a supposedly prestigious college, the degree isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

Go back to HSC.  The hardest thing you can learn in college is how to admit you made a mistake.

Go back to HSC.

I can take care of the display name change for you.

You can get a good education at any college, if you look for it. You can also get a lousy education at any college, no matter how famous. It's more about you and how you use the resources than it is about the name brand.

Dammit, didn't I once link to a story about a study that found that people who'd had a choice between two colleges and chose the less famous one, did just as well later on in life?  It was in the newspaper in the last year or two. I don't have time right now to figure out how to search for it but I'm sure I remember we talked about this.

Paul, you've really changed:

I searched my butt off and found that I had referred to that study I mentioned in that thread but idiotically didn't link to it, and now I can't find it. But seriously, it exists.

I just got pwnd or however you spell that.

Yes Wombat, I was being extremely facitious.  Since the answer to A-CAP's question was so obvious I thought I would provide the only contrary opinion.

Nice Cortjstring there

There was another study where people who went to Ivy League schools got better jobs or something?  But we decided that the same connections that got them to Ivy League schools got them their jobs?

Well, the point of the study that I can't find was that if you are the kind of person who gets into an Ivy League school, it doesn't matter whether you actually go to the school. If you turn down the Ivy League and go to some other school, you will have the same kind of life as if you had actually gone.  Because you both get into the school and get the jobs etc later because of the kind of person you are.  The cause and effect relationship is between you and success, not between the school and success.

Do it. I am so happy at my not-top-notch school, where I get to be super-rad and stand out.

Belatedly: yeah, transfer back. It is not worth spending a year somewhere that sucks.

I spent a miserable three semesters at a school where my entire family had the "Stick it out" advice. After wanting to kill myself, I finally manned up, transferred... and the quality of my life improved 1,000%. DO IT, arachnocapitalist. Transfer back to the better school. You will be so much happier.

I mean, not that A-CAP is Ivy League, but, you know. Similar stature and all that.

"It has been three semesters since I left Hampden-Sydney for New York University, and I have learned at least one thing: How to admit when I've made a mistake"... and so goes my essay on my application for readmission. I am doing this, I am all up in it. Thanks for your advice everyone. Ive since been day dreaming about returning to The Hill and ive decided i wont tell anyone there if I get in. Id rather they find out by finding me taking beer from their fridge on move-in day.

Fuck yes, dude. Glad to hear it. Good on ya for making the tough call and going back. You will be much happier.
