Hey all, the SO and I are looking to plan a trip to somewhere warm this winter and are seeking suggestions to all inclusives. I've had enough of the "you take care of yourself" travel lately, hence the cop-out all-inclusive. We're thinking either Cuba or the Caribbean, maybe Mexico. Anyone been to any they recommend?
-
Isn't Cuba in the Caribbean?
I'm just sayin'.
-
Well you know my opinion... you already went to Indonesia, may as well complete the trip.
-
is all inclusive the kind of thing where they give you a wristband that allows unlimited drinks at the bar and trips to the buffet? If so I want to come.
-
Yeah, the places we've been looking at usually have two a la carte restuarants, a buffet, a few bars - often a swim-up bar, a couple of pools, beachfront local, free snorkeling, windsurfing, etc. It's all included - all the booze, lobster and sun you can get over one week.
Aug - why... is there something wrong with the Caribbean? As far as I can tell the Caribbean is awsome. I only know one guy from the Caribbean. But he presents it as awesome. Lots of folks I know have had awesome times in Cuba. All sitting on the sand by the ocean in February. All pictures of being kissed by a Dolphin. All coming back with a tan and those terrible braids. I want to do all that... except the terrible braids.
-
I stayed at an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic 5 or 6 years ago. I'm pretty sure this was the one: http://www.holidayhotels.com/hotel.php?HID=20040610130627317814
This included meals, booze, snorkeling, private beach. It was a great experience, especially being in the hot sun drinking Mai Tais while everyone back home was shivering in the cold (I went in Jan.). Few notes:
* Swim-up bars are 10 kinds of awesome.
* So are topless beaches
* There was no night-life where I was. Everything shut down at around 10pm, and we were told that if we left the resort we would probably be mugged and/or beaten. There was one really crappy "disco" on-site which played 5 year old one-hit-wonders and was the one place where the drinks were not free.
* The sun sets early in the winter there (maybe all year? I really don't know). That means if you want to swim and sunbathe you really need to get up before noon.
* When the resort is all-inclusive, there really isn't any good reason to stop drinking
* Where we were, breakfast and lunch were all-you-can-eat. Dinner was based on tickets I think? You could eat once at most of the restaurants there.
All I can think of right now. It was a great experience and the all-inclusive aspect of it took away a good deal of the thinking aspect. One price and you know you are not going to spend much more than that (except on trinkets for friends and $2 liters of local rum and maybe a pipe in the shape of a naked lady). Good luck and have fun!

Aug - why... is there something wrong with the Caribbean?
No, I was just being pedantic. You said Cuba or the Caribbean, and like a dick, I meant to slyly point out that Cuba is the Caribbean.
Sorry.
If it were me, I'd go to Arizona. I like the desert.
-
I don't think I have ever seen a desert. I didn't realize this until just now.
-
I've had friends say the all-inclusives in Cancun are good. In the airline industry, they are the Holy Grail of travel, mainly because we like the drinkin'.
-
Ah yes, that should have read "elsewhere in the Carribean."
I just realized there's only a select few on the board who can legally visit Cuba... Which is actually why the SO is so into going there. He's very much about avoiding the 'Merican tourists. It's his way. He wont even travel to the states.
-
damn, harsh.
-
damn, smart.

Damn, hoisted by my asshole compatriots' petards!

man, I feel like it is more a thing where... people everywhere are jerks in their own unique ways.
-
Today a subway machine rejected what I thought was a quarter but turned out to be a .25 canadian piece. I thought it was ironic because at this point, I would have been overpaying with the canadian coin.

This is basically true but most other countries don't demand the rest of the world subscribe to their worldview or face the threat of military force.
Also, easy target.
-
Yeah, it's more than that. I mean I tell him I talk to nice Americans on a messageboard all the time and I point out that many of the bands and artists he enjoys are from the US of A. He's not budging. It's more tied to his strong opposition to the American governmental system, the idea of manifest destiny, a country who's wealth is tied to a history of slavery, and a lot of other stuff that makes him hella unwilling to spend his duckets south of the border. I agree with him on a lot of these points, but he is also undeniably prejudiced against Americans. So there's that too.

Hate to break it to him but Canada actually ended slavery AFTER the United States, and we both ended it over a hundred years ago. Does he also have a problem with spending money in Egypt because of their enslavement of the Israelites?

That's why I hate all of western Europe, so I guess I see your point.
-
If you go to Cuba, and if you like baseball at all, take at least a half-dozen brand new baseballs with you. If you come across a bunch of neighborhood kids playing a game, offer them a new ball. They will immediately become your best friends and ask you to play with them.
-

Why are you arguing with me about someone else's opinions? He's... he's not even here. I told you he was prejudiced against you... don't you understand that prejudice isn't rational? That's how... that's how it works.
Anyway, compairing slavery in the US to slavery in Canada is sort of apples and oranges. The number of slaves in the US was in the millions, where as the number in Canada was under 5000 according to any records I've ever seen, hence his stance that the US's wealth was built on slavery. I never said anything about Canada not having slaves - more than half the slaves in Canada were Aboriginal don't cha know. Conversely I try to remind him that our country's wealth was built on the genocide of a group of people to which I belong ancestorally, so ummm... he should hate our country more than the US because they tried to annihilate my peeps. My peeps! I mean, "now it's personal," as they say in the movies Then he points out the same genocide was enacted in the US, and well... There's basically no reasoning with him. Like I said, he hates Americans. I don't. I hate a lot of things about America, but I don't hate Americans.
Basically what I am telling you is that I will never convince him to go to Arizona.
Besides, I don't want to go to Arizona for other reasons. Mostly because it's where old dried up Canadians go, and I want to go where young virile Canadians go, okay? Is it okay that I want to go somewhere to drink and fuck? Because that's my idea of a vacation. Drinking, fuck*ng and a beach. I mean, my grandparents had a trailer in Yuma, and as far as I can tell, all they did was play hossshoes. There was no drinking, I don't want to think about the fuck*ng... and uh... Man, now all I can think about is old people sex. For fuck sake!
Anyway, A-CAP I appreciate your alternate views. If you wanna continue the "America's Wealth, built on slavery: yes or no" conversation, start a new thread for it. See how I mod? With a soft hand and an open mind. (Damn, even "soft hand" still has me thinking about old people sex. Gah!)
-
Change "beach" to "delicious food" and I'm right there with you.
Great, now all I can think of is old people gumming delicious food. Look what you did!
-
ive got little interest in the slavery: Canada Vs. USA fight. It was more a visceral response to a loosely rational prejudice against me, an american.
-
WTF? Weren't we talking about Carribbean vacations? Dang, you can't turn your back on a thread for a second around here.
-
See if I went to cancuun (that right?) I'd worry I'd run into hell of drunken frat boys.
-
yeah, see, depending on your vacation timing, going to the Caribbean or Cancun could lead to your SO turning homicidal.
-
See if I went to cancuun (that right?) I'd worry I'd run into hell of drunken frat boys.
There is that risk. If you're looking to stay away from that (and who wouldn't?), may I suggest Aruba or St. Lucia. Both have good reputations as vacation spots for adults.

Florida is the florida of the 80s, cancuun is the florida of the 90s, europe is the florida of the 00s. Cancuun is old school by now, I dont think youd run into too many drunken frat boys. <-- Male Fraternity member
-
um, based on the tiny amount I have kept up with kids from my High School, A-CAP is not correct.
-
Yes, several of the young'uns I know have been to Cancun and Mazatlan and found it to be frat/sorority-ville in recent years. It's likely about when you go, and we are travelling during the Canadian version of Spring Break. It's called Reading Week here (don't know if anyone outside Canada calls it this) and happens on different weeks in February depending on where you go to university. I think we're a little old for frat-style partying. We're "get drunk off wine people," not "get drunk off of the cheapest beer/tequila possible" people, or "smoke lots of weed people" (anymore). Also, we're not really "stay up all night people" anymore. And Inev is right, the SO would go totally fuckin' nuts if the timing was wrong. Hence: Cuba. One of our friends is going to an all-inclusive in Cuba next month, so we'll have to find out how that goes for him.

Make sure you pronounce that as kyoo'ber.

Nothing is worse than drunken college students, wherever they are from.
I highly support your decision to avoid them, and thus would not recommend Cancun or anywhere reachable by boat from Florida.
I've had some good times on smaller Caribbean islands that were not infested with the college, but I don't think there are any all-inclusives on Bimini, and also it's been hit by some hurricanes since I went.
-

There is one thing worse.
Drunken college students who aren't sexually attracted to you.
At least if they're hot for you... uhm... you know. You can make up for the annoying with sex.
-
I would recommend Costa Rica but I don't know what the tourist situation would be like in the dry season. There may be a high probability of drunken college students. But there are nice rainforests, nice beaches, and delicious giraffe.

I have a vision of me, clothing torn, running into the rainforest, with a bunch of drunken frat boys stumbling behind me. "I guess I'll just live in the trees now. Sigh."
Actually, Costa Rica would be cool. I'll have to check into it.
-
Your own man-harem tropical paradise fantasy? Maybe with an Abercrombie & Fitch photographer to capture the decadence for posterity - and catalog material?
-
Oh man I just remembered something totally awesome about Costa Rica. There are crabs that live in the mountains (this is on the Pacific side, near some national park). So while you are strolling along the nice path to the beach, you will see these little holes, then little crabs scuttling into the little holes.
Other plusses: Cute monkeys.
-
I've heard good things from friends about Belize, but I don't know any specifics.
-
My SIL took her honeymoon on the Mexican Rivera. Apparently it's less touristy than a lot of places and cheaper than some of the hot spots (like the Bahamas, etc). I first read about it in Real Simple's special travel issue this past spring, but I can't find my copy now and it doesn't appear to be available online.
Also check out Cruise Critic (http://www.cruisecritic.com/), a site I just stumbled upon. It looks like it would be helpful.

Southern Pacific Ocean.
Tahiti.
Bora Bora.
Fiji.
Hell, New Zealand is an awesomely beautiful place.
And Hawaii is VERY non-American if you do it right, but for sensitivity's sake may I suggest a myriad of other beautiful islands such as
Palau
Federated States of Micronesia
Tonga.
It's a big ol' world.

Re: Americans
We're everywhere baby, you ain't never gonna find a place that's not crawling with us.
-
we're like kudzu. there is someplace where we belong, where we would be under control, but it isn't any of the places that we are.
-
I ain't the one that's gotta learn that lesson. I've got American friends of both the real and imaginary extraction after all.
