Title: Show me your desk!
Post by: side_show on January 05, 2008, 04:20:50 pm
It's the place where we sit while we post here, but I have no clue what any of your desk/workspaces look like.    I'm about to move my new desk in, and also we got camera for X-Mas, so before and after pics are to follow shortly, but please if you can, post a pic of where you're usually sitting when you're posting here.

well, when I went off to school my brother stole my desk chair. When I got home my parents said they'd buy me a new one, but I never followed through as I don't use my desk that often. So, during this whole break, I have been posting sitting on my bed. (http://flickr.com/photos/theinevitable/740861467/)

at school, I post from my desk. (http://flickr.com/photos/theinevitable/1341706687/) I am pretty sure I have moved some of those posters around, though. For instance, I decided I didn't want two scarlett johanson pictures within eye-shot, so I took down the one next to Cartiledge Head. Now there is a little mini-poster there advertising Jazz at Holmes, a free jazz series that happens every thursday at Holmes Lounge, the prettiest room in the whole world. (http://flickr.com/photos/vesuviano/403868752/) I love the parts of my campus that are genuinely really old and cool, as opposed to all the new buildings that are fake-old and kind of lame.

Here is my desk (http://img245.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dscn2028wv5.jpg). Nothing too fancy. Just some shitty ikea furniture and a random scattering of junk ranging from a xbox controller to a christmas card with the little brother from A Christmas Story. I know it's Janurary, but I just can't take that thing down.

Can't get FTP to work, so I had to put it on Flickr, where it is not nearly as beautiful as the surrounding pugs: The desk of the woman who obviously has too many cartoons stuck on the wall.

Wow, Holmes Lounge is much nicer now than it was in the 80s.

Hey, melack!  We have the same printer!

I used to sit at this desk (http://picasaweb.google.com/jldunston/MySpace/photo#5152076897092056226), but as you can see, my kid (http://picasaweb.google.com/jldunston/MySpace/photo#5152076875617219714) took it over when he learned to play videogames.  Also, when I hurt my back this summer I stopped being able to sit in straight-backed chairs, so I have done most of my posting (and written most of my thesis) from my rocking chair (http://picasaweb.google.com/jldunston/MySpace/photo#5152076884207154322).  My favorite part of the chair is that it has fold-out arms to house all that little crap that you want nearby but that falls off the end table.  I always have my cell phone, a (usually empty) cup, a bottle of Tums (oh, dire heartburn of pregnancy) and some cashews within easy reach.  You can also see a part of the sweater I'm knitting to bring Hero home from the hospital in.  The blue bowl is from the pasta I had for lunch, which I have not yet taken to the kitchen because I am lazy.

I will be getting a new end table today, which sat next to my grandmother's rocking chair for over 30 years and housed her crochet works-in-progress for as far back as I can remember.  I'm pretty excited about it, because when the baby arrives, I'll need more space for all the stuff I like to have on hand while nursing -- knitting, lanolin, water bottle, burp cloth, nursing pads, book, TV remote, etc.  Also, it used to be my gramma's, which is neat.

Dang, looking at the pic of my chair makes me realize how bare that corner looks.  I need to get some pictures on the walls.  I have them up in other parts of the room, but never thought to put some near my chair.  I have a Somebody nice the Riveter print that will be just the thing.

Ninja edited to add: great idea, smells!

I was wondering that myself.  I suspect the reason it took most people so long to post photos is because they cleaned up first.

I just had to wait for my camera battery to recharge.

mine is not ever that neat, that was the first few days of school. Right now, I think it still has papers strewn across it from the paper I was writing, it has some dirty cups (just from drinking water, so they aren't grody or anything), extra computer cables, and some books on it.

When I lived away from my parents house I had an "office," which was the laundry room where I smoked and could steal internet.  My desk was the washer.  Now I live with my parents and post (a lot more) from the floor or from the garage or from the outside table.  I'll have some pictures later.

Here's my desk (http://flickr.com/photos/linnea/2169213403/). It is a wonderful place to sit and post. My desk at work cannot be accessed on the weekends because the building is secured and my card won't work during my non-working hours. So maybe next week you guys will get a photo of my desk at work?

Now that my roommate loaned me a flat panel monitor, the little boys are disgruntled because they can't leap up onto the shelves above. So my firefighter helmet and hats reside up there.

To be honest, I shooed the cats off the desk and cleared some clutter before I took the shot.

Hi folks - believe it or not we're still working on getting the desk fully set up - there was talk of knocking out part of the wall, sawing (my response was "hell no.") as well as various attempts at disassembly.  I was fairly certain I was going to be without a desk after all, but by the use of many a tool, the SO and his friend got it in for me after patient hours of trying.  Then I cleaned it up and polished the wood with oil.  It's not quite fully reassembled at this point, so let's say photos of mine tomorrow.  Everyone else's photos and descriptions are totally interesting!  I'm so glad I asked.  There's something so personal about them!

That was my home machine (since I'm playing hooky until Monday).  I share it with the wife and niece, and my daughter when she wants to go to noggin.com.  Since I posted that shot this morning it has lost the hat and coffee, and gained a pair of scissors, some tape, a pen, and some trashy vampire novel my niece is reading.  The paper is still there.  Since its communal, there's a certain level of tidiness that comes from each of us having threatened the others with pitching any clutter that accumulates.

My desk at work, on the other hand...well, you'll find out Monday.

Okay, everything's sort of in place now.

Here's my old desk (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/2173889432/in/photostream/).  I forgot to take a picture of it in place, but rest assured it looked exactly like this, only with a bamboo basket full of office supplies under the monitor shelf and a few CD's in the holder.  The problem was a total lack of storage. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/2173101823/in/photostream/)  I'm kind of obsessively tidy- there needs to be a place for everything! - so having nowhere to put my desk stuff drove me crazy!  My number one procrastination technique is to find something out of place, and let that pull me away from writing to do something pointless like sorting files.  I also had a horrible hospital cabinet on wheels that contained things like paper and binders - I didn't bother to take a picture of it - it's just and ugly white thing on wheels.

Last night while setting up the new desk, our tiny cat, Baby, (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/2173898460/in/photostream/) decided she would sit directly on the pile of files I was trying to put away (at this point my monitor is sitting on a big dictionary because it just doesn't feel right if it's too low - it's dark because I didn't want to blind her with the flash.

To solve the problem of needing a raised monitor, I went to my favorite junk shop today and picked this up (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/2173113907/in/photostream/).  Finally, the whole thing is set up. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/2173908316/in/photostream/)  I'm soooo happy with my new desk.  I've never had this much storage, or even a legitimate desk before and I'm big into repurposing old things.  I also love my one odd drawer and all the other little details that tell me of the desk's past life somewhere - it's been greatly cared for, with various carefully repairs you only notice when you're really, really close to it - it speaks to a time when things were made to last and the effort was made to make things right.  Since I have the extra space, I got a little creative with what I put in the drawers (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/2173104983/in/photostream/).  It's hard to tell from the pic, but the desk is huuuuge.  I'm not tall, but I can sit under it comfortably.  Also, in the same office is a closet, guest bed, a TV and stand full of old Nintendo systems and games, and my  "library." (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/2173901776/in/photostream/)

The one thing these photos tell me is that we really need to paint.  White is so boring.

smells, that's very like the desk I had in my office when I first went to work at NC State University.  I love those big, old, real-wood desks that just go on forever.  Congrats on getting it all set up; it's much more Writerly than the laminate-and-chrome "workstation" you had before.

The card catalogue drawers are even better than the desk. Very nice. Hey, don't forget to add them to the TOUAMB pool.

Thanks for the messy desk, #####_god.

I have two computers too (look closely in the picture), but it doesn't make me the alpha geek around here. I'm not even sure how many computers are in the Technical Staff's office. He seems to call one thing a 'computer' that doesn't even have a monitor. And yet he spends no time posting to messageboards. Whatever does he do with them?

I'm actually posting this from the other computer in my office that I use when Win64 craps out (Adobe Acrobat, for one thing - not the free reader, the software that actually makes PDFs).  Having 2 desktops makes me feel debauched.  I should be reclining on a Roman couch or something.

Edit:  They are, in fact, chromatograms as I suspected.  I should probably work on making more of them now.

Well the desk is more-or-less organized but pretty filthy, and several parts of the office (not shown) where I don't sit are totally disorganized and filthy, so I guess it's all in how you define messy.

This is my favorite office set up at home:

That's 45/70 Gov't w/ a Hornady 300g HP and H4198. Turned out real nice, got this group at a 100 in 20-40 mph gusts:

Y'all enjoy now.

Suh-weeeeet! In Alaska I had about 500 rounds for my .357 courtesy of my friend Dan, who also poured his own bullets. Badass.

Here's my desk at work (http://www.flickr.com/photos/linnea/2184858558/). It is ruthlessly clean. I guess I had to learn organization and cleanliness at work, because my previous filing system was just pile shit up. Hey, at least I knew where everything was.

I already showed off my home desk, so now you get to see my work desk. Here (http://flickr.com/photos/shaunmc/2185055907/) it is. I didn't feel like bringing my digital camera to work, so I took this with my cell phone camera. That's a full megapixel right there! I guess the only thing really worth explaining is the "NO FUN ZONE" written on the white board. I had originally written "NO PUN ZONE" in response to my boss' propensity to make awful puns, but in retaliation he came over and erased the loop from the P to turn it into an F. Pretty clever, actually. A lot more clever than any of his puns.

Here it is (http://flickr.com/photos/shaunmc/2185862734/) from a closer view. My favorite part has to be the fake shrubbery growing under my left monitor (although the squishy fake gamecube is pretty cool, too).

Edit: Fuckers at Kotaku stole (http://kotaku.com/343590/work-and-play-a-peek-inside-the-lives-of-gamings-greatest) side_show's idea.

Yes!  It's a shortening of Shawn McBride.    You'll receive no arguments from me on the spelling.   In 8th grade I got tired of people spelling my name the other way, so I myself started spelling it the other way.   Several months of this, and I noticed that people tended to spell it back the correct way.    So my Freshman year of highschool I started alternating the spelling on every assignment I turned in between Sean, Shawn, Shaun, and, the abstractest, Tschean.  Things have settled as an adult, and sometimes I'll change it in my mailsig.   I find it humorous on Outlook when the spelling in my sig, and the spelling on the from line don't agree.

My favorite incident was a program for a play I was in.   They managed to spell my name three different ways in the program without any provocation.  I looked at it, and showed my spouse and said "They're righter than they'd ever know."

I used my desk here for about 5 minutes before I got tired of it. I am now conducting all business from my bed, where everything is designed for my comfort.
The most interesting desk I ever saw was my friend's dad's desk. He runs a kind of auction house and grabbed this desk from some kind of corporate collapse - it was old dark wood, ornate, and maybe 8-10 feet long. He had 4 computer monitors. One for e-mail, one for web, one for Office, and one for whatever else. This was a man who HATED switching applications.

I don't know what that means (nor do I want to) but I normally have TOUAMB covering Outlook and ESPN covering Excel. The other shit is on my laptop monitor and that's just too small for me to bother with. I ain't got no time for no short-dick monitor.

I would like to see what constitutes "Flickr's accepted levels of eroticism."

Does it involve multitudes of checkboxes (as in, "Does subject engage in looks/actions that can be construed as erotic?), or is it more of a continuum? (Mark on the line how the picture makes you feel. 1 is "stone-cold intellectual", while 10 is "mad rutty")

Note: I am pleased to report that spell-check has no issues with "rutty."

Paul's at a bit of a disadvantage. Just by being himself, he's already pushing the acceptable limits of eroticism on Flickr. I'd say the limit would be 1.5 Pauls.

How many Pauls to a Nabu?

A quick google search (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=1.5+Pauls+%3D+%3F+Nabus&btnG=Search) yields... well, the word 'rape' is what it yields. I had really expected more of Google's built-in conversion tools.

Perhaps pauls and nabus are mutually unquatifiable, one cannot be defined in terms of the other. So what I am saying, Paul, is that you are beautiful and unique snowflake, just like Nabu, except not.

Hey, look, a desk.

[img src=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v602/bensanaz/desktop.jpg]

The illusion of localized neatness is caused by my having picked up the newer laptop to take a picture of the old desktop with its built-in camera. In the background is a video game I am playing (to everyone's great surprise, I am sure.) The desk itself was purchased years ago and is custom built for a dude who is huge. This would make it expensive to replace so I am glad I have not had to replace it; it was purchased from local woodworkers who make desks that don't need frequent replacing.

I came across this interesting little collection of writers in their natural habitat (http://www.whereiwrite.org/index.php) and it reminded me of this old thread.

Anyone have any updated desk pics?  I've just gotten a new (wonderful) job and we rearranged the entire office yesterday.  I've got a new workspace to fill with stuff, so bring on the inspiration!

Mine still looks the same. That website makes it clear that I need a much bigger office if I am going to be a success.

I dunno, I was kind of inspired by the people who were writing from their couches and La-Z-Boys. I have an office, but most of the time (like now) I write from my sofa or dining room table. Mainly because my office is where I store stuff, so it's usually too messy to use for its intended purpose.

Well, sure, possibly it happens in that order, but if that's not it, who wants to take chances?

Actually, I mostly write fiction on the living room sofa. The office is for non-fiction. Don't ask me why, the mind is a strange and wondrous thing. The crummy sofa in the office will work for fiction in a pinch.

At first I thought it was a repost of one of the videos from that dude that lives in a really messy house and his videos are essentially cooking segments only his "food" is just some nasty shit.  That's where I thought that was going with the cereal at the beginning.  I think somebody linked to that guy on this board at some point in time.  Anyway, it didn't turn into that.

thanks for watching the video.  Sorry arkabee I don't know why your computer and youtube don't want to make sexy time with each other maybe you should try again or try to reboot or buy Mac or osmething

But don't worry is not sad cat is merely a little anxiety cat and so I was playing him music and he's not used to it so he was kind of not moving much kind of going 'what the fuck is up with this' and such but he is a lot less anxiety than when I got him because I hug him a squeeze him and love him and so on.  I think he is pretty happy.  he will be more happy when I move to farm next year and he can be outdoor cat and play with farm animals.

Yeah AWest that chair maybe should be better but it is cheap and portable and comfy enough for me.  it's not a problem.  it's actually fairly ergonomic surprinsgly enough.  I'm on a budget, rather poor and such.

I'm not sure why yous would think I faking you.  It's for sure my desk.  that's actually a G4.  I bought a G4 off ebay and it came with none of the memory the dumbass said it had, and missing some other stuff, so to get a refund, paypal required that I ship the thing back to him, and I had to pay shipping... ebay is such a ripoff sometimes... so I sent him back the G3 instead of the G4.

I swapped the outside panels of the G4 with those of the G3, not so much out of hoping he wouldn't notice, but rather, hoping he would notice, but only after being confused and tricked for at least a few minutes, thereby making him feel extra snookered.

The inflatable baby?  Oh.. shit yeah I focused on making sure no bills or papers with account numbers were visible on the desk that I totally forgot about my inflatable baby.  Heh that's a little embarrassing perhaps to some people but f$ck we all do it (f$ck, that is) so what's to be shy about.  I had it out because I was shopping on ebay for a dildo that might fit it.  I have a hello kitty dildo that is small for an adult but is still a little big for the baby and I wanted to see if they have anything smaller out there, so I was trying to take measurements with my digital caliper without tearing the... plastic... *ahem.*

If you still want proof it's my desk tell me to move something a certain way or whatever and I'll upload another video showing what you asked for.  Tell me to pose the inflatable baby a certain way, whatever tickles your fancy...

Allow me to be the first TOUAMBer to admit that the baby sex doll skeeves me out, even though it's probably meant to be a joke.

: - )   tee hee.  awesome.  That's what I was going for.  I love how you say "probably," how there is still some doubt as to if it's a joke or not...  Yeah I was hitting the local thrift stores after work thursday and Friday.  So this one store is some kind of charity run by a church.  They have signs posted that any purchase over $10 gets a free bible.  The guy at the register looks to be in his early 20s, and he has a very prominent and large tattoo on the inside of one of his forearms in Gothic type that reads ... I forget what it said exactly... it was some synonym of "saved" or something to that effect.

So I find this... CPR babby...  it's only a buck fifty!  with tax, under two dolla!!!!    here is a scan of the box... (http://midconet.net/achewoodtest/babby01.png)

Sorry I didn't do these images inline but they are kind of large and TOUAMB crashed on the preview so I figured best to just link to them.

so anyway, I mean... hilarious!  So I'm like, gotta buy this!  I have a friends who just had a babby, so I figured I will send it to them.  But more importantly, immediately, I realized what this would be good for - setting the ambiance for my TOUAMB desk video I have been intentioning to make.

So here I am buying this CPR babby intending it for use as a blow up doll babby, at a church thrift store, along with a "teach yourself Unix" book, and I'm like, all trying to play it off as a CPR babby purchase, because I has anxiety often, so I am having anxiety in the back of my mind that somehow the guy knows why I'm buying the babby...

so check out the parents... I mean... what the hell..

  closeup of the people (http://midconet.net/achewoodtest/babby02.png)

it's like... dude, they are FOCUSED on the CPR of the plastic babbys.  Even the little 2 or 3 yr old tyke is focused.  Look at how they are dressed!  They are dressed in some kinda professional church-goin' clothes!  That's a little paradoxial ifn' you ask me, seein' as how church goin' people who dress like that are usually the type who believe that ailments should not be cured with medical things such as medications and science and such, and that you should just put your faith in the lord and speak His blessings!

 Study Guide - The Believer's Authority - We're In A Spiritual Battle - Lesson 1 (http://www.awmi.net/study_guide_believers_authority/spiritual_battle)

Quote
Our son was sleeping in a little crib. Around eleven o’clock he woke up with this croup in his throat that you could have heard in the next room. It was loud, and he could hardly breathe. So I got up, prayed in tongues, rebuked the croup, and released my faith. He went back to sleep and everything was fine.

Thirty minutes later the same thing happened. I got up, prayed over him, and he went back to sleep. Every thirty minutes, I was up and down like a yo-yo, praying over our son and trying to get him back to sleep. Finally, about three in the morning, on one of my trips back to bed, my mother said, “Admit it, Andy. He’s sick!”

I got right down there, stuck my finger in her face, and said, “Satan, in the name of Jesus, I command you to shut up! I will not receive any of your criticism or any of your curses. My son is blessed and not cursed!” Then I started speaking the Word. Mother never said another word, and our son never got up again that night. He was just fine, but Mother didn’t say anything for two whole days—and we were together all the time in a car on vacation.

Finally, when she did speak, she cried “Well, I’m sorry you think I’m the devil” and started into this self-pity party.

I said, “Mother, you know enough to know better. I’ve told you the Word of God. You knew that stuff you were saying was exactly opposite the Word. You’d just given yourself over to Satan. I’m not mad at you. I was just standing against the devil. He was trying to steal my faith for healing.”

To this day, Mother continues to be one of my very best friends. She’s over ninety-five years old and enjoys the blessing of good health. My approach that night was pretty strong, but I knew Satan was behind it trying to steal my faith.

You can certainly take a stand against what people say with more tact than I displayed back then. I was young in the Lord, and that’s just the way I responded. But the principle applies regardless of how you administer it.

*barf*

so anyway

the dude is a mess online.  why not IRL?

dude it's a combination of procrastination and the fact that the kitchen is all the hell the way in another room of the house.  Yes, things are kind of messy... but I'm gettin' much better and much more organized at it.

Wow, I just re-read this thread...fanta. Hm.

My desk situation has changed dramatically since I last posted, and since it came up elsewhere, I thought I'd share the pix here. I did not purchase any of the furnishings for this room; they were all either given to me or they were repurposed from other rooms in the house when we moved. I made the curtains for Pedro's home office when we lived in our first house, back when he often worked from home and I didn't. The desk belonged to my Dad; it was salvaged from the high school he was teaching at when he was first married to my Mom. They were going to chuck it so he brought it home in 1968. It's sad that people throw away perfectly functional furniture like this -- it obviously wasn't worn out 40+ years ago, it's not even worn out now.

Dad wrote his master's thesis at this desk, and Mom typed it here too. It's solid wood, extremely heavy, with locking drawers, a leather top, and a slide-out tray on the right (you can just barely see it behind the chair in this pic). I love it to pieces. This is the desk I sat at when I was eight years old and wanted to be an architect and Dad let me use his drafting board and T-square and templates, and he sat next to me and taught me the basics of drafting.

I got the chair off the side of the road in my neighborhood about a month ago. It's comfy.

I just cleaned it up drastically, otherwise Wombat would be very pleased with it. It was literally covered in pens, pencils, papers, scraps of fabric, rolls of tape, dead batteries, craft foam, and other assorted craft supplies. To the left you can clearly see the stack of boxes that has been sitting there waiting to be unpacked since we moved into this house 2 years ago. There is probably nothing of any usefulness whatsoever in any of them.

The window overlooks my front yard. I bought the little clock radio yesterday so that I could dock my iPhone and listen to music while I work without having to keep iTunes open all the time; my computer isn't very powerful and iTunes causes a lot of lag. (And also because I use my office for things that don't require a computer to be on at all.) The monitor, mouse, and keyboard are plugged in to my netbook, which is behind the monitor. I can push it all the way to the back of the desk and have plenty of space free for things like scrapbooking or sewing. I've actually been doing a little sewing lately because, as you'll see in the next pic, it takes about three minutes to get my sewing machine out and put it away.

Behind that door is a spring-loaded typewriter tray, which actually held a typewriter when I was growing up. It's just right for my sewing machine (handed down from Mom) and since I have a power strip on my desk (behind the monitor) I can plug it in easily without having to dig around behind the desk. To the left of the box tower, there's a smallish closet with seven shelves that contains all my sewing supplies and a lot of general craft supplies, and also a huge stash of empty tissue boxes, toilet roll tubes, egg cartons, milk jugs, two-liter bottles. We do a lot (a LOT) of art projects with recycled materials, because I hate throwing things away and also because my kids love to do arts and crafts (or as my daughter calls it, "arps and craps"), but it can get expensive.

To the right of the desk is a tall, skinny bureau with a plastic three-drawer unit on top and a couple of plastic 12x12 storage boxes on top of that. That's my papercrafting tower, Mom gave it to me when she moved because she ended up buying a bigger cabinet to keep her scrapbook supplies in. Mine is pretty much full to the gills. The larger tools, like my diecut machine, live in the closet with everything else. My yarn lives in these repurposed wall-mounted DVD storage cubes:

And yes, the walls really are that yellow. I'm putting off painting 'til the rest of the house is the way I want it, but it's on my list, believe me.

hm. I need to start using my desk again. Normally it is covered in piles of change, dirty glasses, papers, etc. Behind it is the Wall of Failure (census map of STL color-coded for population loss in each district over the last decade, a postcard my friend gave me of a street near my place after a big tornado in the 19th century, a Jehovah's Witness handout that says "WILL THIS WORLD END"). Also on that wall is arguably the thing LFM would hate the most that I own:

Currently on my desk is a big stack of pages I cut out of the local glossy food magazine. They did a special on local donuts, and are the kind of magazine with more pictures than writing, so it's just 10 pages of huge pictures of donuts. We're going to put them up on our walls.

JL: I love the yarn holding thing.  I'm totally going to steal that idea for my wife as a present the next time she goes out of town.  Also, the entire interior of our house is painted in a similar colour as you have there (bright yellow).  It took some getting used to.  I barely notice it now, but when a friend comes over who hasn't previously been inside they invariably stand still for a bit, blinking and saying something like, "Wow...sunny."  Since we rent, its not something I'm going to bother fixing, especially with the high ceilings in various parts of the house.

I have this awful habit of buying yarn because it's beautiful, but only buying one or two skeins because I don't have a specific project in mind for it, so I end up just keeping it to look at occasionally and wish I had more of it. I also have a bunch of bits and pieces left over from larger projects that are too small to do anything with and too pretty to throw away. But as a rule, I don't buy ugly yarn. But the cheap acrylic stuff, yeah, it's in there. Right on top on the left is a big skein of yellow Red Heart (super cheap spun-plastic yarn that has been exactly the same since the 1960s) that I inherited from my grandmother, but having all those colors thrown together in an organized jumble (I tried to group them by both form and function) really disguises the fact that some of the yarn in that pile is basically only useful as scrap. Those specimens are heartily outnumbered, though, by the really lovely stuff I prefer to work with -- I even have a couple of skeins of tweed camel down that I've been itching (no pun intended) to use for something.

The rack was seriously about to get thrown away when we moved. We bought them off the clearance rack when we lived in our first house and needed something to house our growing collection of XBox games, and though it's hard to tell from the photo they're actually three separate x-shaped racks. I lapped them together so I could store yarn in the "negative space" between them and on top. It's one of the better brainwaves I've had in terms of repurposing old furnishings. After we moved into the apartment, I took two of the rectangles (the Xes come apart in the middle to form two long interlocking boxes) and mounted them vertically to the wall on either side of the bed to use as nightstands. We could store books in the bottom part, and the top was just big enough for a cup of water and my eyeglasses. There was no space for a traditional nightstand in our cramped bedroom, so these were ideal. The other 4 pieces were nested and stored for 2 years before we moved in here. Probably a good use of $45, given how much use they've had over the last decade.

All this is to say, thank you, I am crap at taking compliments, but I do appreciate them.

Also, Smells, I cannot overstate my satisfaction with the hideaway sewing machine. I am seriously in love with this concept, and it is inspiring me to actually learn to use this fancy machine that my Mom gave me 4 years ago. It does embroidery and everything, it really is too good for me. But I'm trying -- I just picked up some instructions and bought some fabric to make holiday placemats for my kids, I think they'll like that and it's mostly straight lines. It amazes me how much sewing is like construction -- lots of angles and measurements and math. The good kind of math, though -- the kind where you solve it, and there's only one answer, and that answer tells you exactly what to do next.

Edited to add: Holy crap, if this is what I'm like after too much caffeine these days, I'd better never decide to try cocaine.

Two to one says he won't be able to separate Mork from Robin in his brain and rains down the displeasure.

The suspense is killing me!

Actually, while Williams has done a lot of lame shit, being one of the leads in THE giraffeER KING forgives basically anything.

It forgives PATCH ADAMS for Christ's sake.

If I had to pick one movie to say "this is the movie most like what it is inside my head" it would be giraffeer King.

A wounded little intellectual fella gone mad with grief all duking it out with a hella-crass guy who means well but has no idea when he's going too far.

It's funny because I hate Robin Williams. You reference Patch Adams, which I haven't seen, but basically nothing he will ever do will make up for What Dreams May Come. That movie was dogshit.

Interesting to hear about your scrap yarn situation JL.  There are these two awesome older ladies who are total knitting addicts and they come to my work once a year to drop off a garbage bag full of children's mittens knitted out of their scrap yarn for us to donate to the kids in foster care.  Its a great use for the scraps and the kids love the crazy, miss matched colours.  Plus in Canada, having a whole bunch of spare mittens on hand is really helpful.

Yes, I've considered doing stuff like this for charity. But my knitting time is so limited I barely have time to knit the things I want to knit for my own kids, let alone to donate. I was just thinking the other day that I need to make new toques for each of my kids, since theirs from last year are too small. That's certainly a stash-busting and quick project, but between those, the long-overdue crochet cardigan for Mom, the Christmas dress I'm knitting on for Kitten and the Angry Birds plush I'm sewing for BooBear, that'll be all my crafting time between now and Christmas.

What I need is a full-time job I can quit to make time for all my hobbies.

I think the key to why the older ladies can make such a donation once a year is that they are older ladies.  Their children are grown, and they socialize by sittin' and knittin'.

If it makes you feel any better, JL, I have a bunch of supposed hobbies that really just piles of cool supplies that I could make something really great with if only I had some time.  And I have no kids to fill up my time.  Just a regularly injured hubby, which is it's on thing.  Retirement is a lifetime away, but it sure looks sexy to me.
