Title: Woah
Post by: farqussus on February 27, 2008, 06:45:08 pm
Has anyone seen the "I didn't want to have to do this" thread in the Achewood section?
Are these the same people who READ Achewood?
Have they seen themselves (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=02102005)?

I only just came here, I've been trawling around the assetbar for ages, and I thought this place might have a sense of humour. This was the first fuck*ng thread I opened. Seeya, fuckheads.

I guess I'll probably be banned for swearing anyway.

Wow, that thread really works.

It establishes a protocol for strip-related threads *and* repels assholes.

Nice work, AW.

Do you think we could get that asshole-repelling property in, like, a spray can or something? I could definitely use it in areas of life other than the messageboard.

"Establishes a protocol"?

Jeez, you guys have no concept of the irony do you?

So Asherdan, you've regulated where we can have fun? That's very kind. It must have been madness before you established the protocols.

By the way, seeing you guys thought I'd left, exactly who are you trying to convince by posting here? Four posts, three moderators. It's OK, no-one's going to steal your little fiefdom. Your Mom still thinks you're cool.

But... but our mom was the first person who replied.

We were just trying to stop lame "first post!" posts that plague blogs and message boards everywhere. We're all about the content. Also education and wandering threads.

By enforcing the spelling out of the month? Good luck with that.

If you hate it so much, why are you still here?  Do us all a favor and fuck off.

you edit posts. what surprise. i notice you still hang around the ass-bar. see you there!

Okay, just to get some things straight.

We do not "enforce" anything.  We ask people to put full dates *only* in the threads relating to new strips, as a courtesy to the others reading the board.

We do not edit others' posts here.  The only time that happened, another admin and I didn't speak to each other for a week.  It's not a thing we do.

Third, we have a pretty good idea of what the definition of irony is.  You don't seem to know, but if you stick around, I'm sure one of our resident linguists could fill you in.

Fourth, Asherdan did not regulate where you can have fun.  I did.  (Jough helped.)

Fifth, we're going into our fifth year in this particular incarnation, and many of us were involved in the debacle that was the Achewood board at Dumbrella.  We've been at this long enough to know what's going on.  We're not worried about anyone stealing our "little fiefdom."  The reason most of the respondents so far have been mods is that most of the regulars around here *are* mods.  We've got, like, twenty.  I can't even keep track.  Point is, we don't need you or your ass-bar friends to prop us up.  We know who we are and we like what we do.  If you want to be a part of the community, we welcome you with open arms.  We've proven time and time again that we're happy to have new members, and we don't haze newbies.  But we have plenty of new people coming in every day with quality posts and insightful comments that we don't need to cater to douchebags like you.

The only reason this thread isn't locked right now is to give you an opportunity to respond if you like.  But this conversation will be ending soon, as it reflects poorly on the board to spend too much time making mincemeat of such an easy target.  So by all means, farq, lambast away.

But to my people, I must request: don't feed the trolls.

He did link a quality strip. And I, for one, like our little fiefdom.

You have plenty of other threads to play in, now stop picking at this one, it will never heal.

Aww I missed the fun.
As is traditional I'd like to put forth the theory that Farqussus is totally Onstad.

Man, if God didn't want us to have Internet fiefdoms, he wouldn't have made so many goddamn Internet peasants.

(I could get really pretentious here and compare this board more to Renaissance Europe, where a massive die-off offered the opportunity for social mobility and the growth of fresh culture and a true middle/noveau-riche class outside the traditional lines of nobility, but a) it would be pretentious and b) Farkwad would probably show up to yell at me for thinkin', as is so outside the assbarian code.)

Jamie showed me this thread last night.  It made me wonder how many of us are familiar with the phrase "the September that never ended."

You can look at it on the Jargon File (http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/S/September-that-never-ended.html) or on whatever wikiWYSIWYG newfangledies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September) the kids use today; you know, if reading is your thing.

Basically it's the tragic tale of how the net used to be all old hands.  All DARPA and professors and grad students.  And then every September there would be a new influx of freshman, and they would know nothing of etiquette or what had come before, and within a short period the huge majority of experienced users would inculcate manners into them.  In 1993 a company called America Online connected its largely inexperienced users with the internet's leading message system, USENET.  The resulting flood of uninitiated users overran the cultured few, and the internet has been a cesspool ever since.

Several things strike me about this story.  One is the fact that it repeats over and over again with different players and settings.  Another is the fact that hackers (in the elder sense) are both so unattached to existing convention that they freely create new jargon, but so neurotic that they rigorously maintain a records of their culture as it thrashes and dies and is reborn.  The most powerful thing that I take away is the fact that I first heard the word "internet" in 1993.  I was playing around on BBSes and learning how to craft a persona that wasn't connected with my physical appearance, but I wasn't on the internet.  I didn't even have an AOL account yet.

In short, what I take away from 'the September that never ended' is that I am not a member of the cultured few.  I am a part of the cesspool.  And from my perspective, the cesspool is more interesting.  I love how this place welcomes newbs.  I don't love how some of them are brash and uncultured.  It makes me flare up like a street flare with ten pieces of flair.  But it often helps to remember that I am part of the cesspool.  And that the cesspool is often more interesting.

Hmmm....  I would probably post more if I didn't feel the need to drop volumes of reflective self-importance in each <textarea>.  I'll work on that.

Yeah but... I had email back when only grad students and professors had it. Only people you wanted to hear from were able to send you messages. Not bosses and administrations sending mass memos about things you didn't need to know about. Not people who wanted to sell you Viagra. Not... you get the picture.

Yeah, and neither could I, in those days, buy black sesame caramel candy online and have it shipped directly from Japan.  Or read Achewood. But still it was a golden age in some ways.

Some proper shit.

It would appear that there is yet some classiness left in this old internet.

The thing you should be working on is the belief that you shouldn't post awesome and insightful content. I, at least, love reflective self importance. What board did you think you were posting on?
