They are Ferris Bueller and his depressed friend, respectively. Onstad's sense of justice leads him to give the depressed guy the great girlfriend, in contradistinction to the film.
-
Great is subjective.
You're basically right though, if the depressed friend's parents had a meth lab instead of a ferrari.
-
That's quite a first post. Welcome aboard.
Let the hazing begin!

I can see Ray singing in a parade.
I can also see this working for Parker Lewis Can't Lose. Beef needs to start hiding things in his coat, stat. And he needs to start wearing a coat.

He wears a coat when he floats down the creek.

Great is subjective.
I think that apart from reader opinion Molly is clearly positioned as the "good female" in the strip, and contrasted sharply with Tina, as Bueller's chill, sexy girlfriend is contrasted with Bueller's uptight aggro sister. In the same wise, Tina is depicted as an aggressive, uncontrollably farting prostitute who is so debauched that she knows sex acts that aren't even on wikipedia, whereas Molly is cheery and positive, backing Beef up when he needs it, and game to satisfy him in bed but still very sensitive, such that she cries when Beef is weirded out by the human ears.
Now that I think about it more, perhaps Beef's winning of Molly is not so much a break from the Bueller film as a consummation of its promise. It was not so subtly hinted near the end of the film that the girlfriend and the depressed guy, Cameron I think his name was, sort of had a thing for one another. It's not unlikely that she found Cameron more interesting than the amusing but depthless blowhard that Bueller was, and that they hooked up after high school. Beef and Molly is in a sense this hookup, and their marriage thus marks a step in the great redressing of the power imbalance in the American high school - nerd finally wins, jock/popular guy suffers.

I'm going to say that the nerdy friend would have totally banged the neurotic sister.
-
Yes but she wouldn't have been good for him. She might have been a groovy fuck but would have stunted him in the end. The girlfriend, "Sloane", was just the medicine he needed.
-
Cioran, you need an avatar so that we can start putting a "face" with the awesome.

Just gotta be different...

I might just start including my avatar in the body of every post.

It's an interesting comparison, but the cool guy/uncool guy pairing is found in many more places besides Ferris Bueller with varying degrees of similarity to Achewood. In the Hardcastle/McCormick and Michael Knight/KITT dynamic, the characters were foils to each other socially, but came together to save each other's lives at the end of each episode. (This is the friendship every man wants.) In the GOF, Beef and Ray's relationship was at the same time both deeper and more professional - Kirk and Spock all the way.

Enkidu was such an uncool rube and kept embarassing/cockblocking cool-cat Gilgamesh.

Were Sargon, Hammurabi and Ashurbanipal there too?

Sargon was the guy who ruined the party. Hammurabi, he does his thing in the day, you know? And it would be interesting if Ashurbanipal were the distant ancestor of Asherdan.

I take your point but the Ray/Beef dynamic is a bit more specific than cool/uncool. Ray does not map to David Hasselhoff, for the love of Zoroaster! Money/poverty and optimism/pessimism get all in there too.

Ferris Bueller saves Cameron from himself and definitely wields more power in the relationship. OTOH, RB and Ray are far more equal. If anything, Beef is the one that saves Ray. Aside from his GOF strategy, it was Beef that hacked into Yahoo! when Teodor posted Ray's fake personal ad and it was also Beef that had to make sure Ray's pepper doesn't touch the rim. I don't think either is dominant, therefore much more Kirk/Spock than Ferris/Cameron.
-
Kirk/Spock is definitely a much better comparison. usually when Beef goes down for something it's because has decided it's inevitable or it is the proper thing to do. Ray needs to be there to show him to break out of that narrow world view.

Points taken.
