Title: Great thing, or Greatest Thing?

the last 1.5 hours or so of "the best show on WFMU" this week was about this thing, and I laughed so hard that I had to go sit down away from the computer for a minute to compose myself.

Other than the fact that I have absolutely no interest whatsoever in any of the so called entertainment scheduled for this thing it looks like a really well thought out, fan friendly event.

That was the greatest 14 minutes of the last month.

Wait, so these people are simultaneously Juggalos, Ninjas, and Fat Kids? And some kind of family? Are we gonna have to get a research grant and get all ethnographic on this bitch?

I could never ethnograph this. The urge to Freak Out and Talk Sense would be too great. It is the same reason I don't go to church anymore and have never attended a midnight screening of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I can handle a Ren-Faire for the food and to watch people joust or whatever but... please, don't come up to me In Character and expect me to LARP with you. I am not a foreign trader, you are not some kind of archer for the king. You and I are people at a pretend pleasant place and if you cross over that line, I will Freak Out and Talk Sense.

I guess that I am sort of supremely judgemental but all I can say is that it comes from a place of compassion. Well, the Rocky Horror Picture Show not so much but...

"LOOK, OKAY, IF YOU ARE GAY, THAT IS AWESOME AND I AM FINE WITH THAT! GO BE GAY AND THAT IS AWESOME BUT... THIS IS ACTUALLY AN IRREDEEMABLY BAD FILM, PLEASE, GO HAVE OMNIAMOUROUS MAKE-OUTS, DO NOT WASTE YOUR LIFE MAKING COSTUMES TO WATCH BAD FILMS AND PRETEND THAT *****ICALLY REPEATING THE SAME QUIPS ONCE A MONTH WILL FILL THE PLACE IN YOUR HEART THAT ACTUALLY NEEDS A COCK! GO BE HAPPY! GET AWAY FROM THIS FILM THAT IS TERRIBLE ON ALL LEVELS!"

I can only imagine what that would turn into when confronted with a sea of heavy-set hillbilly white kids expressing their disaffections through... jester-rap.

yeah, to be honest, I could not actually go to such a thing with a straight face. also I would be scared of getting killed.

also, same here on Rocky Horror Picture Show. Goddamn, that movie.

There is a constant struggle where I want to be able to be OK with people liking this stuff, but it just turns into condescension.

I also had this problem a lot working at summer camp. But I guess that's more of a thing where I feel really uncomfortable in events where everyone is doing the same thing (yelling the same cheer, singing the same song, whatever). I would have been a much better counselor if I could have drank beer every day.

I don't have that. At least not for a lot of things. I have it for some things, but not a lot. Not this, anyway.

Eh I'm down with Rocky Horror, I wouldn't dress up for it but it is a thing people like, I can appreciate that. I feel the camp thing though and I think the difference is that the camp chanting thing I've always percieved to be people pretending to enjoy themselves in a unified manner which is kind of weird.

This ad just keeps getting better and better though, what the hell is going on with this line up? Coolio? Ice-cube? Vanilla Ice? Pauly Shore? WHAT? I'm getting the feeling they're just into it for the spectacle, they don't care what's actually going on.

Edit: FULL ON SEMINARS!

I know there's the san-fran type alternative movement that embraced burlesque and other aspects of old school freak shows but I suspect places like this is where all the freaks really went.

But, but, the Prime Directive?!
Title: Re: Great thing, or Greatest Thing?
Post by: littlefallsmets on August 01, 2009, 02:25:28 am
One of the greatest things about Star Trek was that the Prime Directive was one of the central ideas of the series...

But most of the time, the point of having it there was to have the characters stand up and break the thing whenever there was the slightest hint of a reason to, as long as the reason was a Kennedy-esque left-wing war-hawk kind of reason such as reversing an injustice that they accidentally participated in or what have you. Every other episode, there was the space equivalent of a Darfur where all the left-wing space pacifists would suddenly do a 180 and be all like "we hate violence... but lets blow up that ship of people accidentally making a group of space frogs extinct... for the frogs!"

Right-wing-style interventionism was so wrong that the Major Rule of the show was forbidding it... but the second that liberal-guilt white-man's-burden interventionism was an option, those motherfuckers just barreled in with laser guns and ion bombs and fucked some shit right up. And I say this as a card carrying bleeding heart everything, it was just such a beautiful microcosm of that kind of ideology.

Y'know... Kirk ain't supposed to fuck no green ladies... but if the green lady WANTS it, hell, who is Kirk to deny her the Siege Tiberius?

So too for this. Some old spaceship crash accidentally left a bunch of shitty rap metal and clown make-up on a planet of fat white trash that didn't know no better and it accidentally created this abomination. Federation is scouting out how to make shit right that once went wrong and hoping that the next leap is the leap home. Gotta just run with that premise and NEVER BREAK CHARACTER.

i gesturing to the person in the security guard shirt.  if he actually is security, theyre trying to appear friendly, so they they dont get kicked out of wherever theyre at.  without their makeup, they look like all the other nameless faceless trailer-dwellers.

if the shirt is just ironic, then theyre being good to their fan and posing for a snapshot with him.

despite ICPs actual music and thier lame schtick, i have respect for them.  they obviously dont get much major media attention.  their success and longevity must have been self-sustained and well-earned.  also, they have all these intense, loyal fans for a reason.  im sure they are respectful and down-to-earth in at least SOME instances.

You mean like your obligation to find people publicly enjoying something you don't enjoy and then tell them how stupid they are for enjoying it?

Yeah, I'm late to the thread, but holy fuck, if you go to a Renaissance fair what kind of fuck*ng asshole do you have to be to jump up people's butts for wanting to pretend they're in Renaissance Europe while they're there? The easy way to avoid ever being exposed to people who are pretending they are in romanticized Renaissance Europe is to not go to a renfaire. The easy way to avoid people pretending they're Vulcans is to not go to Star Trek conventions. The easy way to avoid juggalos is to not go to the Great Outdoor Juggle.

The idea of going to an event where people get together to enjoy something harmless that they're into and you're not for the explicit purpose of making it harder for other people to enjoy themselves is pretty fucked up, guys. It is a proposal that you go out of your way to reduce other people's happiness for no benefit to anyone except your own belief that they will be better off if they are less happy. What the fuck.

In my defense, I have never outwardly flipped-out on someone spewing "m'lord" at me.

I just say it in my mind. I am politely dismissive and I move on.

I guess that one of my deepest frustrations with the damned human race is that... like... for all the reasons there are to rebel from and reject the arbitrary rigidities of the mainstream culture, it seems that what comes next is the equal and opposite reaction of a formed subculture, just as rigid and probably twice as arbitrary.

Disenchanted high school kids form a damn "goth" subgroup as catty and conformist as the cool kids, except even more labyrithine from the isolation. A lady realizes she likes ladies instead of men and she goes to a bar... wherein she is instantly forced to decide whether she is to play the role of a stereotype of a man or the stereotype of a lady. Four nerds go into the basement to rebel against the school and the mountain of stupid meaningless rules therein... by playing D&D, the most ridiculous set of rules upon rules under God's blue sky.

Recoiling from the random crushing order of the pretend-game that we call "society" into... a microform with entirely different trappings but all the same damn rules of order that crushed you in the first place except, just maybe, you have a higher position within the micro-hierarchy as opposed to the macro-hierarchy.

Whole thing just bugs me. Instead of escaping the pretend to being adrift on a frightening sea of real... nope... just another smaller pretend where you like the wall-hangings and carpeting better.

Whereas, no, I'd just kind of like to watch the joust and maybe have a turkey leg without having an alternate posit of reality foisted upon me, thank you. As Ben Folds once said "I paid my money/and I'm gonna see all the movie".

I'll accept the possibility that I'm the one in the wrong by feeling these ways but...

I can't fight this instinct that I'm onto something.

You may be onto something, but it's not exactly news. We're social animals. Forming social groups is what we do. You might as well moan about wombats digging tunnels. giraffe gotta swim, birds gotta fly, primates gotta know who's up and who's down and what the rules are. And then complain about it, I suppose.

Ain't saying I have an answer. I don't think I've ever said I have good answers for anything.

Just a whole lot of questions and gut-feelings.

I believe you might be reading a bit more stridency into my gut-reactions to situations than I'm intending. Now, granted, I type quickly and have all kinds of ideas on a given notion when I think something through, some of them glib, some of them melodramatic so I see how the mistake is more mine than yours but...

Yeah. I'm "judging people" a lot less than I am "throwing ideas against a wall".

Anyway. Too many too-like minds and there is born an orthodoxy, no matter how good the intentions, I dunno.

And where there is orthodoxy, there are power differentials to be abused and that's where I check out, Charlie, like gone.

Immersive Pretend + Power Differentials = A Bad Moon Rising. I am wooged out, the subtle feelings of group-think and manipulation toward the consensus kick in and I don't wanna be nobody's master anymore than I wanna be anyone's slave.

It is why I am ultimately pretty bad at being a Good Liberal despite being a bleeding heart.

I don't want to exert power and I don't want power exerted upon me. Hate the feeling of either.

also: yeah, I wasn't throwing ideas against the wall, I was judging people.

Silently, in a way that probably has only the effect of, say, making me spend 6 weeks with 1 friend at a linguistics conference, because the other people at the conference are all too nerdy? Yes. Exactly that way.
Exactly that way where I think that I am "too cool for those kids,"  and they think "that awkward kid has no friends, we should be nice to him."

oh for fuck's sake all of you people shut up

here's a good solon-of-athens style compromise that will make no one happy but everyone will be at least equally unhappy

- everyone has the right to associate with whatever subculture or activity they choose (ren faires, juggalo gatherings, dragoncon, fantasy football, pub crawl clubs, 4H, the republican party, etc.)

- by that same token, if the majority of those people arent functioning members of society then everyone else gets to make fun of them

functioning, here, refers to a majority subset of:
- can hold down a job
- will not be declared self-destructive in terms of lifestyle habits by a AMA-licensed doctor, psychiatrist, etc
- expresses empathy for fellow human beings or humanity as a general
- has fewer than three felonies on their personal record
- has achieved at least a high school education or equivalent GED
- can be trusted, according to the standards of their community, to raise children

by this definition most ren faire people pass muster and most juggalos* do not

quod erat demonstrandum now shut the hell up

so maybe theres a difference between a dead baby joke, and taking lightly the death of an actual baby or child...

I have typed this out like 7 times and then deleted it. May as well go for it.

I really want to understand the little thing the casket rests on top of. Is this like, a winch thing, or is it just a flat thing that holds the casket up and is removed to lower it into the grave, or what. If it lowers the casket, how do they get the straps out from under it? Do they just jimmy them around until they come out? that seems kind of disrespectful.

until I went to my first funeral, which was extremely recently, I didn't realize that part of what is really upsetting about funerals is that this box is there, and this person you love is in the box.

What it is is a way to keep straps taut until you put the box on it. Then you use the winch to make the straps less taut (there is a lot of strap) and this lowers the coffin into the ground. Once done they slide the straps by pulling it from one side and it slips under the coffin. The box is not jimmied. It is extraordinarily heavy (I've been a pallbearer).

When I die, I want my coffin to be a battering ram used to knock down the barricaded doors of the blacklit cathedral. It will be heaved by six burly men dressed like vikings and promptly hurled into a pit of molten lava at the apse. Then a choir of tall, skinny goth chicks will sing on cue: fuck THIS guy!

The stakes have been raised. Your move, Cassandra.

Is there something wrong with Faygo? I stopped off at Oleason's in Michigan and carted a 12 pack of it back to Cali and it did no harm.

I've never tasted it, but based on that video I get the impression it's the dopest shit ever.

Well, I can confirm that it does just fine with ice cubes and rum added to it, but it's just a flavoured cola on rent in the end.

About the grand burial dreams...just my opinion but who gives a toss? I'd hope I've done enough in my life that a burying wouldn't be a thing necessary to remember me by. Kick me in a hole and go to the after-party already.

But hey, it ain't for me and I won't be there to plan it so...whatever.

Death is the time when you guilt all of your friends and family into humoring you into doing the things they wouldnt be willing to do for you when you were alive. Just watched this (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/cool/) episode of Frontline about marketing to teens.  How they find what's cool and market it.  They seek out teens that are trend setters and then expose it to a mass audience in the process killing it.  Therefore what's cool was constantly shifting.

They make the point that the marketing reflects the culture and then becomes an echo chamber and the culture begins reflecting the marketing.

They used ICP as an example of authentic youth culture because they weren't created in some MTV lab.  And that the rage they displayed was against the mass marketed culture itself.  The show then posed the question was ICP so out there, so obnoxious and terrible that it couldn't be marketed.  But yet they actually managed to do just that with the result being Limp Bizkit.

As horrible as they are I think they earned a little bit of respect from me for being who they are and not what Madison avenue created them to be.

I'm saying this very poorly.  I encourage everyone to watch that program it was very enlightening.

I do not know if authentic youth culture should involve like, renting out the hot dog stands that they have at state fairs, and charging people a lot of money to come to see your weird festival thing.

mostly I just hate the idea that the only way to avoid commodification of your culture by outsiders is to make it so... unlikable to me personally.

Let's be honest, one of my favorite bands is Nirvana. I can love something after it has been ripped off a whole lot. As long as it's, you know, good.

Like I say, it's just what was put in my head.

My dad was just a little bit too young to really be of that generation and his whole life he has been haunted by the idea that Real Change could've come out of those years but because nobody stepped up, once none of them had to worry about themselves or their lovers getting drafted, the whole thing dispersed and everyone who wasn't too drug-addled to function stepped back into the legislated nostalgia of their parents' white-picket-fence yards to...

To raise a new generation, my poor generation, with the hope that maybe the responsibility could be shifted to them as their own absolution, only to end up with a twenty-year stretch of self-obsessed media addicts, self-obsessed funhouse-mirror Alex P. Keatons and... to borrow one of Hunter Thompson's best known phrases... all these failed seekers.

All the potential leaders assassinated, retired into narcissistic guruhood or too busy putting too much hope into their kids.

God, if I ever finish that novel I put down when my brother got sick, that's what it is on the deepest deepest level.

My wrestling with the shadow of my father's sense of generational loss. That while he was playing keyboards for small-time bands and slaving in a gun factory to feed his kids, America didn't quite die but at least rolled over in bed, refused Last Rites and asked for more morphine. Dylan is just one of the larger symbols of that.

I'm not talking about the bands that came up with Nirvana, most of those bands were really cool actually.  I remember seeing Gas Huffer in a sweaty attic bar in Lubbock Texas.  I'm referring to the sea change in rock and roll that took place in their wake.  And it ties in to what I was talking about with that Frontline piece.  Did anyone watch that, it's very good.  Anything that's cool and authentic gets seized by Madison Avenue and sold back to the kids.

So yeah Nirvana rocked like a mother fucker, awesome band.  Seether and Staind and Creed and Days of the New and all the other corporate media message friendly rock bands that dominate the rock charts these days suck so much ass.  When did whiny and pathetic become the new cool?
Title: Re: Great thing, or Greatest Thing?

have you read the story on wikipedia of how Scott Stapp attempted suicide?

It is a really sad mix of... a really sad/pathetic story, and weird delusions of being more of a significant musical figure than he is.

it answered my wondering about, you know, "do creed know that they're horrible, or do they think they are a huge deal artistically as well as commercially?"

there was some really horrible popular band that I read an interview with where they explicitly said, "we do not care whether this music is good, it is making us money, we are crafting a product." I think I respect that more than the idea that Creed are really putting their best into expressing themselves through this music.

So watch as my rhymes ignite and light the dark
Unless you wanna step on dog shit walking in Menlo Park

Creed decided Columbus, Ohio would be a good place to play on their reunion tour and they booked the 19,000-seat Nationwide Arena as the venue.  We do have our share of people who can't get past that era in music (Staind, Limp Bizkit, 3 Doors Down, etc) but even the radio station that catered to their taste decided it was more reasonable to play Guns N Roses every third song with Metallica in between.

It appears they may have over-estimated demand because they've had to slash ticket prices: Now all seats are $10 to $15 and we're being given tickets by the stack as "promotional items."

Definitely one of those "Winner gets four tickets to see Creed, 2nd Place gets eight tickets to see Creed" situations.

Wombat would say that at least it's posting something.

I know this because I am the snarky part of her subconscious.

I'm impressed with this bot, actually. Naming itself after one of my dogs to try to placate me seems like pretty sophisticated behavior for a computer program.

[you guys know where I stand on the scientology already, I bets]
Thats just your thetans talking. I bet you feel stressed a lot, too. Maybe pop on down to the local temple(?) and get one of those free stress tests they're always offering.

Yeah, Carnival of Carnage, that's the ICP disc I have.  It's their first one, huh.

You know, they are pretty fun once you realize it's not meant to be taken seriously.

GWAR does it better, AFAIC.

Yeah, maybe, IDK, don't care.  GWAR are having fun with Metal though and ICP are having fun with rap/hip hop.

Maybe I like ICP because I feel like I'm in on the joke.  I get the feeling that most of their fans aren't, actually.
