Title: The popular song(s) you hate the most.
Post by: side_show on October 29, 2009, 04:01:14 am
You know, the song or songs that are/have been popular enough to get a lot of airplay that you just hate. The sort of song that makes you angry at the world for liking it.

Discuss.

One Week - Barenaked Ladies

The level of loathing that I hold for this song is the standard by which I measure my displeasure regarding all others.

I like black hole sun, but it annoys me.  It's like the singer builds up to it, but then never climaxes.  C'mon man sing the high note, I know you can do it.  That song is like a yawn that never quite materializes.

Choop - yes Black Hole Sun was terrible.  Also - the video for Black Hole Sun was equally terrible.

One that I currently hate more than anything is that damn Taylor Swift song "Love Story."  I hate it so much that my husband and I have deconstructed it for awfulness in order to analyze why it is so bad.

Love Story

We were both young when I first saw you (you are 19, being young is NOT a past-tense thing)
I close my eyes
And the flashback starts
I'm standing there
On a balcony in summer air

See the lights
See the party, the ball gowns
I see you make your way through the crowd
And say hello, little did I know

That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet
And I was crying on the staircase
Begging you please don't go, and I said

Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story baby just say yes

So I sneak out to the garden to see you
We keep quiet 'cause we're dead if they knew
So close your eyes
Escape this town for a little while

'Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter (Now you're just naming titles of books.  The Scarlet Letter is about a 17th century puritan woman who has a child via an adulterous affair... how does that even related to... oh never mind.)
And my daddy said stay away from Juliet
But you were everything to me
I was begging you please don't go and I said

Romeo take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince and I'll be the princess
It's a love story baby just say yes

Romeo save me, they try to tell me how to feel (feminism really is dead, isn't it?)
This love is difficult, but it's real  (oh really, cause you seem to be basing it on some vague understanding of a play you skimmed in grade 9)
Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess
It's a love story baby just say yes
Oh oh

I got tired of waiting
Wondering if you were ever coming around
My faith in you is fading
When I met you on the outskirts of town, and I said

Romeo save me I've been feeling so alone
I keep waiting for you but you never come (alternate lyrics I made up:  "I've read some books, or at least I know the basic gists")
Is this in my head? I don't know what to think (alternate lyrics:  "It don't matter if I don't know what the context is.")
He knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring

And said, marry me Juliet
You'll never have to be alone
I love you and that's all I really know
I talked to your dad, go pick out a white dress  (wait, did you even rent the movie version of Romeo and Juliet?)
It's a love story baby just say yes

Oh, oh, oh, oh
'Cause we were both young when I first saw you

I'm a horrible music snob, I don't think that needs to be re-belaboured...

Though it must be noted that all things Gwen Stefani has been attached to, that category holds a special place in my hate.

Establishing her career under the premise "well, if you call my horrible punk-pop horrible, I will hide behind calling you a sexist because I am a PUNK and I am part of a REAL GROUP OF MUSICIANS" and then, the moment she is famous, quitting rock and her band and suddenly putting out profoundly-awful dance tracks dolled up like the copy of a copy of a copy of Madonna... this earns you a special ring in hell.

"yes, im sorry that you  hate jocks and you hate corporations and you hate religion and you hate society and you hate your parents.  put down that bottle of jaeger, use this tissue to wipe the eyeliner off your face, and come out into the sunshine for a li'l bit.

One Week - Barenaked Ladies

The level of loathing that I hold for this song is the standard by which I measure my displeasure regarding all others.

As a pre-Maroon BNL fan I like this song. I have a soft spot for songs where they sneak in a lyric change (it'll still be one week till I say "wasabi")

This isn't exactly in the spirit of the topic, but Rent. Every song. I fuck*ng hate Rent so much.

Don't Go Chasin' Waterfalls.

Why?

Waterfalls don't move, you dolt! You don't have to chase them! They're stationary objects!

Gah.

I also like One Week, not their best song but fun.

Most hated song I was just reminded of: My humps, my humps my humps etc. ad nauseum.
Apart from it being a horribly ear raping tuneless piece of noise 'my hump' is the least alluring description for female anatomy basically ever.

I wish you ill.  Soundgarden freakin' rocked.

My suggestion would be anything by Limp Bizkit, especially that one where he went "Yeah sucka hands down, tell me whatchoo gonna do now?!" in a squeaky voice.  Was that shit supposed to be intimidating?

I think I basically find all of the songs people are posting to be terribly annoying.

Carlos, I am not slagging Soundgarden in general - I liked some of their stuff.  Okay, but if we're on the topic of Soundgarden: Spoon Man?  What the hell was up with that.  So bad.

In regard to the Black Eyed Peas, have we forgotten about the original version of "Lets Get Started" - "Let's Get Retarded?"

The video is here. (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=39697053)  The original lyrics are here. (http://www.lyrics007.com/Black%20Eyed%20Peas%20Lyrics/Let's%20Get%20Retarded%20Lyrics.html)

Jay-ell - I super, mega ultra hate Don't Go Chasin' Waterfalls.  So annoying.  So poorly written.

For a while I liked Beirut's "Elephant Gun".

Then the wrong people in high places noticed that song, and put it in the soundtrack of a pin-headed TV adaptation of one of Machado de Assis most famous books, Dom Casmurro.

1) Machado de Assis is renowned by his subtlety and elegance, and Dom Casmurro shows him at perhaps his most restrained - so naturally the good TV folk adapted the story using circus elements, and a German expressionist style! The protagonist was shown crying through one of those novelty glasses that squirt water! Yay!

2) They really got their money's worth out of the deal. To say that they overused the song would be an understatement. It was on the opening and ending credits, it was in the soundtrack itself, it was everywhere all the time. Always that little intro with the mandolin, always the main riff with the plaintive horns. Over and over and over and over again.

3) A friend of mine who still follows music went to buy tickets to the Beirut gig here in Rio. It was after the series had ended, when every living soul in this vast land (8.500.000 km2, 190.000.000 people) had been bludgeoned to death with the song. She said the queue to buy tickets was 60% old ladies who simply adored the TV series. She was cornered into chatting, and got to learn that the old ladies thought that "Elephant Gun" was the most precious thing ever penned by a young musician in the last 20 years, so much better than all that noisy stuff...

In short, I wish I had an elephant gun available everytime I hear the song or someone mentioning the song. But then I would be poor because I bet elephant bullets don't come cheap.

Thank you, smells. For some reason it really really bugs me when a venue that has been playing the "explicit" versions of songs will suddenly put on "Let's Get Started." It's like the universe has decided that the original version just never existed at all.

I'm tempted to just list entire bands that used to make me immediately switch radio stations (Bush) but I think it's probably more telling to say that despite TMBG being my favorite band for many years I could never get through the song Dead. It just bugged the crap out of me.

Right now I'm really hating this Careless Whisper remake that I'm hearing on the radio.   It's soulless, and lasts forever.   Earlier this month I was in a strip club, and the nice lady on stage echoed my feelings on this.  When this song came on, she made a face and a juvenile 'jacking-off' hand gesture.

Relatedly: I feel like I'm really supposed to hate Lady Gaga.   I'm supposed to find everything about her and her music repulsive.   For the life of me I cannot.   I love her!

... Limp Bizkit...

it pains me to admit this, but there was a period of 2 years(i think i was in jr. high) that i thought limp trizkitt wasnt a hole in society.  the only reason i ever started liking music that used growling/screaming vocals was because of thier cover of george michaels 'faith'.

speaking of which, dont you hate how a songs words will imprint themselves on your brain if you hear it more than  3 or 4 times?  even a song that is so annoying it makes you want to strangle a nun... thats how i feel about celine dion.  they play her CDs on the PA system in hell.

Worst current pop song BY FAR:  a shitty song called "Sometimes Goodbye is a Second Chance" by some shitty band called Shinedown.  It is inane, trite, repetitive, nonsensical, and jam-packed with cliched music and lyrics and shitty pre-manufactured 'hooks'.  BLEAH.  I feel the need to purge just thinking about it.

I like One Week, I like Black Hole Sun, I like Rent (although I hated the thing for a while where you had to either love or hate Rent and weren't allowed to just like it). I suspect that a lot of this happens because I don't really listen to the radio all that much, so I get about as much of any given song as I want to get.

edit: Oh! I hate the works of Andrew Lloyd Weber and most of Les Miserables. This is not because of radio play but it is due to a similar phenomenon in middle school and early high school when every teenaged girl with an interest in musical theater thought she was the bestest soprano and needed to jam her voice up as high as possible and screech out her favorite Broadway songs. In that context Rent was a fuck*ng godsend because it swept through the teenage musical-nerd scene and gave them something else to sing which would not destroy young men's ears and souls and in which male singers could participate.

Firstly....
One Week - Barenaked Ladies

The level of loathing that I hold for this song is the standard by which I measure my displeasure regarding all others.
Of course. Congratulations - you have a soul.

Then....
'black hole sun' ruined 1995 for me. and '96.
Thank you. I have had way too many friends down the years who have tried to defend that band to me. And to them I say....
Spoon Man?  What the hell was up with that.  So bad.

Elsewhere....
My #1 most-despised pop song is...

(drum roll please)....

Don't Go Chasin' Waterfalls.
I have to say that I've always had a soft for that song. When it came out I was in a pretty all-encompassing punk phase and I still thought it cooked (which probably should've been a pretty clear indication that my future would be more Belle & Sebastian and less Circle Jerks). I'm not gonna try to defend it, but I have to be honest about it; I still like it all these years later.

And....
One that I currently hate more than anything is that damn Taylor Swift song "Love Story."
Can't say that I've ever heard it, but from scanning the lyrics I can say that she could use a lesson from Mark Knopfler (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Romeo-And-Juliet-lyrics-Mark-Knopfler/539CF8B6194AEF5D48256BD000104033) on the subject of incorporating that particular storyline into a pop song. He's the only one who ever did it right and he did it so right.

And finally....
....I could never get through the song Dead. It just bugged the crap out of me.
But...but those are the best lyrics they ever wrote.... You cannot be serious.

P.S.
Also, there is a terrible cover of the already terrible Toto song Africa which instantly causes me to change the station.
Ray and I could not possibly disagree with you more. (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=03182002)

P.P.S.
I haven't been listening to the radio much so far in the 21st century, but the worst popular song that has managed to reach me against all odds in the last year or so would have to be either "I Kissed a Girl" or maybe something by that annoying, talentless little pissant Soulja Boy.

Oh, it's just that whole faux-lesbian "Look at me, look at me! I'm a girl kissing a girl! Isn't that hot boys!?" thing. I think I just saw too much of that in various dance clubs down the years and hearing a song that so artlessly perpetuated it was just too much.

Not to mention the fact that it's just boilerplate tripe. That doesn't help either.

there is this current popular rap song that has the creepiest backing vocals I've ever heard, but I don't know how to describe it or find it.

The lyric is something like "why would you wanna break up" in this incredibly creepy voice that makes me think of a serial killer. like the voice where you are calm, but about to murder someone.

Rent is horrible. That Toto song is something that... even as a kid I knew it was horrible, but it is catchy.

Whenever someone gives me shit about liking something poppy, I feel the need to punish them by listening to something really abrasive. It is not a good impulse.

"You think it's "gay" that I like Stevie Wonder? Fuck you. We're listening to hardcore punk for the rest of this drive. What's the matter, this is too loud for you? Gosh man, make up your mind."

pink lyics are always about how emotionally screwed up she is, but the music is kind of rock-ish pop.  i never know how to take it.... and she knows that she looks man-ish.  i think she  dresses kinda slutty to compensate for it, but it shows that quality off a lot more.

Owl City: Fireflies.  Might not be burninatin' up the charts but it gets air at my local "alternative" rock station.

It's like someone distilled any sense of edge or masculinity out of The Postal Service, leaving behind only breathy preciousness, and then used it to fill in a Sensitive Boy Mad Lib with words from an 8-year-old girl's (or Philippe's) LiveJournal.

My roommate has Parrot Head license plates. Personally I don't much care about him one way or the other.

Owl City: Fireflies.  Might not be burninatin' up the charts but it gets air at my local "alternative" rock station.

They're from Minneapolis.  We still fuck*ng RULE the alt-rock and indie world after 25 years.  Owl City, Solid Gold, Jeremy Messersmith, Haley Bonar, Bon Iver, Har Mar Superstar, Atmosphere, it's all good.

I think I officially can't handle Robert Plant ever again thanks to this damn thing. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2p4EQt8A-Ds)

I don't know if I ever thought before, "would Led Zeppelin be better without Robert Plant?"
The answer is maybe, when listening to all the songs that sound like this, in terms of "I'm singing so Bluesy!"

I am sorry that I had to revoke a tiny can for your inclusion of Owl City in the list of acts that "rule the alt-rock and indie world," but I'm afraid it's the only way you'll learn.

"Would Led Zeppelin be better without Robert Plant?"
The question as far as I'm concerned is "Would Led Zeppelin have been good without Robert Plant?" And my answer would be "Probably." Page walks a pretty thin line, but I think they'd be OK. Anyway, it's all academic. Plant took what would probably have been a good if not great band and turned them into something that I will forever loathe.

Sorry if you feel sad due to punishment.  Maybe you could get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs to cheer you up.

Or maybe a pretty sparkly pony, catching dreams on a rainbow lollipop, could give you a butterfly kiss and a handmade coupon for maximum cuddles.

I hate that particular Owl City song the most because I think it's a pandering caricature of twee electropop.  The can was removed because Har Mar, Bon Iver, Atmosphere et al. are deserving examples of Mpls' stature as a ROCK CITY.  Including Owl City in that list is like including Rachael Ray on a list of great TV chefs with Bourdain, Ramsey and Colicchio.  One of these things is not like the other.

great TV chefs with Bourdain,

This is a sort of a tangent, but is Bourdain really a TV chef?  I mean, he's clearly a chef who is on TV, but he has a travel show, not a cooking show.

Which reminds me that I need to get caught up on this season's shows.

That could be said of all three. I like them and everything (though I've never seen evidence that Colicchio can so much as fry an egg), but I have to assume that Alton Brown could cook them all under the table. The man is a scientist.

Where do you live?  (I ask only because I'm coming to your house to get my can back.)  (Or the handmade coupon for maximum cuddles, whichever you give me first.)  (Goddamn it.)

I don't know.  I love Alton a whole lot and he has influenced my cooking more than anybody other than my mother and grandmother, but he's never been a professional chef.  Didn't he go to cooking school just so he could make Good Eats?

Julia Child was never a "professional chef" in that she never worked for a restaurant before she started teaching classes in Paris and working on her first cookbook. She still was hell of awesome.

I think so. I'm pretty sure he worked in TV before and decided to make a fun cooking show which required attending cooking school.

Well, I assume that nearly all professional/celebrity chefs have attended cooking school at some point. That shouldn't be held against him. He obviously learned a ton and has put his education to excellent use.

That is it precisely.  He explained it on the Good Eats anniversary special.  Nobody had a cooking show like he wanted to see, so he went to culinary school precisely so he could make that show.  Sounds crazy, but obviously it worked out.

Yeppers!  But tack on the suffixes Husker Du, the Replacements, Soul Asylum, the Jayhawks, Built to Spill, Semisonic, and Flogging Molly Boiled in Lead, and you've got yourself a THING.

(Now TurboNinja's gonna de-can me for including the Jayhawks or something.  Bleah.)

Shit, I meant Boiled in Lead, not Flogging Molly.  Sorry about that!  (They were both in my rotation yesterday and I got confuzzled.)  You're right about Built to Spill; they play here a ton, and I got bad intel.  Thanks!  Good to know the truth.

I am here right now and am absolutely hating it, but OKC/ Norman has three of the best bands of the last 15 years.  Flaming Lips, Starlight Mints, Evangelicals.  There may not be a ton, but all of the bands who have any type of national appeal in like the indie scene or whatever are amazing.  Also, check out Student Film, pretty darn good.

It is all like throw everything at you psych pop.  Weird it comes from where it does, but so good.

I hate that it seems to have become trendy to "admit" that you actually like that newish Miley Cyrus song. Granted, I haven't heard more than 30 seconds of it, but it's pretty obviously exactly as shit as everything else she's ever done and ever will do.

My least favorite thing ever is the whole "guilty pleasure" concept.

Either you like it or you don't. Come on, hove some dignity.

"haha, you've got to admit, Miley Cyrus is pretty catchy..."
I don't care, I hate her. Don't act like I'm fooling myself if I don't like her. there is good pop music out there, and she is not it.
