Title: It begins. End of the decade lists
Post by: CortJstr on November 23, 2009, 04:03:12 pm
eMusic just put the up the final segment of their top 100 albums of the decade list. I own 10.5 of them (I only got a few of tracks of Cat Power's) which sounds like a really low number.

And The Strokes at number 1? Really?

yeah, I think I have for once in my life reached a zen-like state of "oh, that is what this list says is best, go figure."

Although it's weird to think that people actually like the strokes as much as all of these lists indicate. I like them, but until recently I thought of them firmly in the category of "bands I heard on alt-rock radio when i was in middle school."

Also, the first time I heard the word "hipster" was in reference to fans of the strokes. I thought about what that word might mean, and decided that my friend Sarah was a hipster.
I don't think she was then, but she sure as shit is now. Hoo boy.

As time goes on, I place a much higher value on sincerity and enthusiasm in art.  Pretension and boredom are the antitheses of these qualities, and are completely summed up in The Strokes.  Never before has one talented band given less of a shit simply because giving a shit isn't cool.  Fuck that noise.

And The Strokes at number 1? Really
Aaaaand thank you for saving me the trouble of so much as clicking that link. I agree that Is This It should be somewhere on there (probably around the low 80s or something - it was sort of "important" in its way), but that's not a good sign. I'll have to think about what my list would be. I guess that's what this thread will be about, obviously. Just off the top of my head without really thinking about it, I'd have to imagine that The Flaming Lips' The Soft Bulletin and Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea are gonna be hanging around somewhere high up in the top five.

Fuck. Both from the '90s. This'll take some thought, then.

wait, but they're so cool and good.

listen to when this poppy little bass part (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQRJvZBH1gw) comes in.
This is not at all my favorite Strokes song, but listen to that dang bass part!

I own 21 of the albums on the eMusic list.

eMusic's list are always "Top ___ albums that eMusic distributes," so you have to take 'em with a grain of salt.

Considering I acquire 1, maybe 2, non-eM albums per year this isn't an issue for me.

I'm surprised Scale by Herbert didn't make the list. They had a huge hard-on for that album when it came out. And it is pretty good.

i hate entire albums because i only end up liking 3-5/12 tracks, so if i cop to liking the album, its unusual.  thats why i steal music so much.  although, i have eased up since discovering that amazon DLs are so cheap.

top albums for me:

Popaganda-Head Automatica
I Get Wet-Andrew W.K.
MTV Unplugged 2.0-Dashboard Confessional
MTV Unplugged-Julieta Venegas--------->limon y sal (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uF-U8V894RA)

I couldn't help but make up a little list of my own. Lists and music are both obsessions of mine, so it basically had to happen. I made a top 100, but I won't subject you all to it. That'll be for my unfortunate facebook friends. Before anybody says anything about the paucity of White Stripes or Yeah Yeah Yeahs entries or whatever, let me say that this is not a "best of" list, per se. These are the albums that changed me in the '00s, whether or not they changed the music world.

20. Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes

19. Lookaftering - Vashti Bunyan

18. Andrew Bird & the Mysterious Production of Eggs - Andrew Bird

17. All Hail West Texas - The Mountain Goats

16. Chutes Too Narrow - The Shins

15. Two Suns - Bat for Lashes

14. You Are Free - Cat Power

13. Dear Science - TV on the Radio

12. Hail to the Thief - Radiohead

11. Fate - Dr. Dog

10. Kid A - Radiohead

9. Alice - Tom Waits

8. Oh, Inverted World - The Shins

7. i - The Magnetic Fields

6. Want One - Rufus Wainwright

5. The Milk-Eyed Mender - Joanna Newsom

4. Amnesiac - Radiohead

3. Bright Flight - Silver Jews

2. Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like a Peasant - Belle & Sebastian

1. Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots - The Flaming Lips

In conclusion, I have to say that at the end of the day the '90s were a slightly better decade for music. But I fully realize that this feeling could just be a product of my age (older, more closed-minded, busier so less time to discover new artists). I don't mean to make light of these and many, many others which dropped in the last ten years. There's some life-changing shit in there, for real.

26. you really got a hold on me-she&him
20. gone daddy gone-gnarls barkley(the video is the shit on toast, man!)
*****7. lithium-polyphonic spree(i dont know how to take this.  the sad heroin-rock song clashes with orchestral/choral-pop styling.  its refreshing and i like it, but it confuses my mind and i dont like it.)
4. hurt-johnny cash

Cash's cover of "Hurt" was good but his cover of Neil Young's "Pocahantas" will blow your nose hairs back.

Near as I can tell, Johnny Cash and Neil Young were put on this Earth to make songs that should be covered by the other.

I know they're not really in Paste's target demo, but Franz Ferdinand has done some pretty amazing covers this decade.  This weekend, I re-listened to their takes on Blondie's "Call Me" and LCD Soundsystem's "All My Friends", and found that the former was a worthy cover and that I like the latter better than the original.

I almost got pissed that Metallica's cover of "Turn the Page" wasn't on the list, until I realized that it came out in '98 and I'm just old.

Ryan Adams' cover of "Wonderwall"--yes.  Much love.  My all-time favorite cover, though, and I honestly am not sure why, is Big Sir's cover of Hall and Oates' "Sara Smile".  I'll add a link if I can find one.

Mine is The Mothers of Invention's version of "Happy Together".

Yes! The 1971 Fillmore East show where they play that song is really fantastic. That album was actually my first exposure to Zappa.

And I don't know if anyone has heard it but Pink Mountaintop's cover (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qt_0paFMDqc) of Atmosphere by Joy Division is really good.

Interesting side note which both of you very well may already be aware of: The lead vocalists and founders of The Turtles, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman, were full time members of The Mothers at that time.

You're so professional, Howie.

I actually got to see Flo and Eddie perform live at an oldies show at the Kentucky State Fair about 15 years ago.  They were hilarious.

that was most assuredly a worthy cover.

The 30 best cover songs of the decade (http://www.pastemagazine.com/blogs/lists/2009/11/the-30-best-cover-songs-of-the-decade-2000-2009.html).
Kind of scraping the bottom of the list barrel topic-wise with that one, but what the hell. They're all fun.

I love Calexico and I love Love, and the former definitely does the latter justice in this case, but they almost do the song too much justice. The first time I heard it I didn't realize it wasn't the original until, like, a minute in. Granted, it was a noisy bar, but still.

Johnny's "Hurt" is definitely pretty important, but more so for the video than the song itself.

Had no idea Gillian Welch did a version of "Black Star." I can imagine it working pretty well.

I'm not sure what's more tragic - the fact that Rufus Wainwright's version of "Hallelujah" (which basically outdoes even Cohen's original) is nowhere to be found or the fact that Brandy Carlile's version even exists.

The inclusion of Cat Power and Seu Jorge put my mind at ease, even if they are both far too low.

Nick Cave's take on "Let It Be," while not earth-shattering or anything, definitely deserves a spot near the bottom.

Rowboat-- holy FUCK is "Fate" good. I keep meaning to post my favorites-of-the-decade list, it is coming soon.

But oh my GOD Fate. is such good album. Why hadn't I heard of Dr Dog until this year? I saw them live and it was AWESOME.

I think the consensus between my roommate and girlfriend and I was...

I keep typing out really mean things here.
I guess I will say, we did not have anything nice to say about him.

I think my roommate said something like "maybe indie music wasn't such a good idea after all."

Hey it's no big deal. If a person takes great offense that someone else doesn't like the same bands they do, they probably need to grow some thicker skin.

Also, I think he may very well be the least attractive musician I have ever seen.

p.p.s. I left halfway through the Dr. Dog set because I thought they were acting like a bunch of douches.

Man, I don't know.  That's basically "Here's a bunch of dudes with beards."  For the most part, I don't see anything all that exceptional.

Except that Warren Ellis cat.  Now that's a scary-ass beard.

well, its spin magazine, so they basically just pick random indie-rock dudes.  i mean, there arent many other options because real famous people tend to shave or sculpt their facial hair regularly.

Warren Ellis is a "desperately wants to murder and skin Alan Moore and then pretend that he is Alan Moore in his Alan Moore skinsuit" hobo.

You know, for record.

I believe you are talking about comics Warren Ellis:

Spin is talking about music Warren Ellis:

I like Comics Warren Ellis. When he's firing on all cylinders, he can be pretty funny dude. And he hasn't pretended to worship any snake gods lately (that I'm aware of). Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Oh, I like some of Ellis's stuff actually too.

It's just... yeah, I mean, Alan Moore's a one-man genre and... sometimes you get the feeling with Ellis's stuff that he's trying too hard to write books where the pitch would be "Alan Moore but more marketable".

This is something about half the DC writers are guilty of and a third of Marvel too and, like, admitted Ellis writes some of the better Mooresque stuff but...

Yeah. Yeah. Music Warren Ellis, whoever the hell he is, looks like if John the Baptist ate George Harrison.
