I fuckin hate summer in New York, this summer has clearly reminded me why I spent months looking to move away. Most of the streets in this city literally smell like a huge pile of shit. One time last year I was walking home to Queens from Brooklyn. One block smelled like pure fresh shit. The next block was absolute sewage. The next block? You guessed it. Piss. You go into the city in summer and every street is covered with liquid leaking out of piles of garbage bags. EVERY STREET IN MANHATTAN SMELLS LIKE ROTTING TRASH ALL SUMMER. It makes me so mad, this is the dirtiest metropolis in the world and it must be the worst smelling. I really can't guage if the beautiful autumns really make up for the hellish shithole of a summer.
-
all the public fountains in St Louis smell like sea world.
i put my feet in one of them, and now all I can think is, my feet are covered in 100000 little kids/hobo's piss.
-
i am uncomfortable in temperatures higher than 75 degrees, but at least here in nowheresville, there is a lot of nature to enjoy. also, there are lots of positive aspects to the small town vibe.
-
Wow, when other people's descriptions of cities make Baltimore seem clean by comparison...
I just don't know. Say what you will about the tragic heroin problem, our absurd murder rate per capita, the horribly polluted harbor, at least the streets don't smell like piss and shit and garbage.
-
Yeah, fuck summer in the eye.
My office building is right next to an outdoor mall. At the mall there is a fountain, which is kind of like a trailer trash version of the Bellagio fountain in Vegas. Like I'm pretty sure the only songs ever played are a Celine Dion song and an annoying-as-shit patriotic county song. And of course it's much smaller. Anyway, during the summer dozens and dozens of obnoxious little kids run around and scream in that fuck*ng fountain. Every time I have to walk by I want to stab my fuck*ng ears with syringes. And then of course the parents let their goddamn kids run around the fuck*ng mall so you have to dodge the little slimy fuck*ng creatures. For fuck's sake, buy a fuck*ng membership at a fuck*ng pool. Jesus.
-
oh, the kids swimming in the fountains in downtown STL were all cute. It was really charming, actually.
It was just the smell that was so weird and bad.
our refrigerator sucks and all of my food keeps going bad.

Well at least they keep the shit, piss and absolute sewage segregated. Heh heh.
Wow, when other people's descriptions of cities make Baltimore seem clean by comparison...
Yeah, I know man, Houston must be paradise.

I guess there's pros and cons no matter were you live.
all the public fountains in St Louis smell like sea world.
Yeah, we've got one of those dancing waters fountains in the big park here. The little kids use it by day the the bums use it at night. They have so much chlorine in that thing it's pretty ridiculous.
I was at a concert in the park Saturday night and occasionally I could smell the chlorine come wafting by all the way over to the amphitheater maybe 100 yards away. So if your fountain is anything like that fountain I wouldn't be worried about germs.

Yeah, how dare those fuck*ng kids enjoy themselves.
Anyway, I love the summer. I went to a pool party (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/4740557763/) yesterday. A couple of weeks ago I got invited to a beach house (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/4698776576/) for the weekend. That sort of thing just doesn't happen in February.
-
oh, yeah, I meant to come here to post:
in the summer you can sit out on your porch with cold beers, put your feet in the fountain, stay up until 3 every night playing Diablo 2 or Settlers of Catan because you haven't found a job yet...
ok, maybe that last one is just me/my friends.
Paris has ruined me forever, because now all I want in life is to sit in parks drinking beer. Why can't I drink a beer in a park?
The B-52's are playing on the 4th of july for free at the Arch, and I just don't know. that seems like a prime time for drinking some beers with friends.
people in St Louis shoot off so many fireworks. It is really strange. Maybe Charlotte is the place that's strange, because none of my friends agree that it's weird.
also: tons of my friends are moving to Baltimore right now. Med school, law school, moving along with SO who is going to med school... it is where the largest number of my friends will be other than here.
Although there are a lot in NYC as well.
-
Yeah, how dare those fuck*ng kids enjoy themselves.
Sure, I could have a better attitude about it. But, I'm at work and I hate my job and the last thing I want to deal with is some wet kid running into me. And it's hot outside. Once I'm off work, I'm pretty OK with summer.
-
Fireflies. We are having the most amazing firefly season.
But soon it will be over and yeah, fuck summer so hard. It's been REALLY hot for the end of June. The pugs hate me because it's too hot to go out. They seem to assume that I could change the weather if I wanted. And they have a point. Why don't I put them in the car and drive north till it's cool enough to go for a walk? We might not be able to stop till we got to Canada, but that wouldn't bother them.
-
Welp, everyone's entitled to their opinion. I'm with Paul, summer is awesome. Yeah, it's hotter than fuck, but that's what pools and sprinklers and A/C are for. I like cookin' on the grill and tending my garden. I like baseball. I'm going to the beach next week. FUCK and YES.
-
Put me in the pro-summer camp.
This has been an exceptionally warm one, though. And warm much earlier than usual. Stuff is maturing and blooming a couple of weeks early. The whole "Corn knee-high by the fourth of July" - deal, for instance. It's 6 - 7 feet tall already.
-
I like baseball.
Oh yeah, I got invited to a baseball game last week. That's definitely a fun summertime event. If I could afford it I'd do that a lot more often.
Put me in the pro-summer camp.
If it weren't for summer I would have never been able to take this (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/208196384/) picture.
I think this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KDY4nR1IqCs) sums up my feelings on summer quite nicely.
-
There's something to like about any season - but there's nothing to dislike about summer, IMO. Well, my wife is cranky because of the heat - but that's not Summer's fault.
-
But see, here's what cruel about summer. You look forward to it all winter and expect to be able to do all this fun stuff. But then, at least where I live, it's so hot and humid that it's totally miserable to go outdoors and do any of the stuff you imagined.
Oh sure, if you're in Southern California it's fun. But come on over and experience one of our days of like 200% humidity and you might understand why it's not quite the same for the New Yorkers etc.
-

Oh give me a break. You're talking to the Houston Kid here. Don't try to tell me about heat and humidity. And I've been in NYC in August (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/sets/72157607031792714/) and by comparison to Houston it's not bad at all. I found it quite pleasant in fact. One particular evening I even regretted that I didn't have a jacket to wear.
-
I think people who live in the South must really be genetically different. The only possible explanation is that their bodies have evolved to handle heat differently.
-
I don't really have anything to add. I just wanted to go on the record as being firmly in the "Fuck you, Summer, Screw you" camp.
It was so hot outside this afternoon that it took longer for my washing machine to wash a load than it took about half the stuff on the clothesline to dry.
-
As I am in a place with Humidity again, I understand this sentiment.
-
Oh yeah, I got invited to a baseball game last week. That's definitely a fun summertime event. If I could afford it I'd do that a lot more often.
Are there any minor league teams near you? Cheaper tickets, and you don't have to pay $8 for a beer. Kind of a different feel but still a blast.
-
They don't allow aluminum bats do they? Nothing ruins a baseball game for me faster than hearing a piiiiingggg.
-
No, minor league teams use wooden bats.
College teams are the highest level that I know of that uses aluminum.
-
which reminds me: NorCal in the summer is the best. cool in the morning, warmer in the day... it is like permanent spring/fall. Would wake up early, walk to class in a light jacket, then get out of class to find it all sunny and perfect, with the mountains all around, cute california girls skateboarding... oh man.
oh man.
The amount of time I spend thinking about how much I want to live there is maybe unhealthy.
-
One time I left Stockton in shorts and a t-shirt (98/98 remember) at 9 AM and picked up the crew on the way to CandleCrotch for a nooner. It was 58 and blowing when we got there at noon and the game went 14 innings before Mitchell rapped one off the right-center wall and then Will the Thrill smoked one out to center to end it. By that time my jacket and pant-leg-less self was fuck*ng blue.
The Bay...only place I know of the homeless die of exposure in July. Loved it.
Yeah, I went out west (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/sets/72157619583940573/) last summer for an artcar thing (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/sets/72157620989635805/). At the afterparty in this parking lot in Seattle it started getting chilly and everyone starts pulling out jackets and blankets and stuff. Meanwhile I am freezing my ass off in my shorts and short sleeve tshirt. Everybody was like "don't you have a jacket?" It's fuck*ng June for fucks sake, I didn't pack a jacket. It got down into the low 40s.
I got pretty chilled in SF too. The next day I was in Fresno and it was 105.
-
They don't allow aluminum bats do they? Nothing ruins a baseball game for me faster than hearing a piiiiingggg bink.

I really hate being hot. I am in Denver right now and it's fuck*ng miserable. It is so bright and so hot that my eyes burn when I go outside. I have to run the A/C full blast in the rental car. I don't know if they are classified as panic attacks from the traffic, but the heart palpitations are back and they really fuck*ng suck. My doc gave me benzos for it, which I refuse to take, so I don't even have them here anyway.
One of my friends keeps asking me when I will move back to Denver. The answer is "fuck*ng never". It doesn't even feel like vacation. It feels like a huge string of shitty obligation after shitty obligation, strung together with long 2-hour bouts of panic-inducing traffic in suffocating desert-like heat to get anywhere. I cannot wait to go to San Diego where I will be in a fabulous hotel for a solid week, not have to drive, and will get to walk around downtown where it's warm and not unreasonably hot. Then I will get to go home. Fuck this noise, I'm not even coming back here next year. I will go someplace fuck*ng enjoyable instead.
-
I've never been to Denver, but I do remember PBS telling me that their highways suck. And I know it does tend to get pretty hot sometimes in some of those inland areas, no matter how many miles high they are.
-
I spent four days in a late spring in Denver and on one afternoon it rained, snowed, and the sun came out to 80 degrees all within like two hours.
I want to spend a New Years up in Canada, because in my mind, to feel like New Years, it has to be cold as fuck.
Gotta getta passport.
-
Man, whatever, today was the nicest, mildest day in Denver all summer. It was fuck*ng perfect except for the heavy rain there for a bit. Also, traffic? WTF? Live in the west or Downton (ftw) areas, ain't no traffic. If you're by 225 you aren't in Denver anymore. That's Kansas. Also stop in at one of our thousand dispensaries and chill the fuck out.
-
Denver is a beautiful city. I have memories.
-
If I was in Denver proper it wouldn't be such a bad gig. However, I have been driving between Brighton, Lakewood, and Aurora, which fuck*ng blows. Today, in like 20 minutes I have to go to Castle Rock. It is bullshit.
I did get to go downtown and go to Hamburger Mary's and the Wrangler, which was pretty fun. I get to go to a waxing studio on Broadway next week, which will be nice. Keith, I can't hit any of the dispensaries because a.) I don't have a medical card, and b.) it is not worth losing my job over at the next random piss test.
-
Sheffield's amazing in the summer. Hot but not boiling due to the northerly clime and surrounding Peak District, the leafiest city in Europe, tons of public money put into keeping the streets clean so it's pretty sparkling and not too smelly.
Shame about the students
-

For reasons unknown, I was hoping "Hamburger Mary's and the Wrangler" was a play or something, or maybe a single location - as they sound like names that go together. Hamburger Mary's (http://www.hamburgermarysdenver.com/) does sound tasty though - there's something about a buxom lady and grilled meats that is just fine with me. Also, is this The Wrangler (http://www.denverwrangler.com/index2.htm) you're meaning? If so, it's interesting to see these clear gender presentations with some alternative sexualities at both venues.
-
When I was passing through Denver, heading east, the fact that there was a Hamburger Mary's in Denver was really fascinating to me.
Knowing of the one in West Hollywood from my time in LA, of course, the idea that there would be a hybrid hamburger-stand/gay bar was not so very shocking... in the large and openly-regarded gay community of West Hollywood, gay bar speciation wasn't the oddest thing to happen. I hadn't really CONSIDERED that such a thing would happen but I guess I put little of my thought onto the notion of gay bars.
However the idea of a hybrid hamburger-stand/gay bar being FRANCHISED... this bespeaks a level of social development that is both encouraging and also kind of weird.
We are at the point where there are chains of gay-themed restaurants and on that level, that is a sign of awesome growing tolerance.
And yet. There is something unsettling about measuring our social progress in these terms. Standardized food service chains. Local businesses moving to a super-regional model.
Progress is progress and progress is great but, I dunno, measuring out progress in such strictly monetized ways is kind of a double-edged sword in a way.
-
there is a gay bar in St Louis called "The Loading Zone."
-
I am convinced that I remember passing a bar in the suburbs of Utica called "The Manhole" multiple times on the way to the mall as a child.
And, of course, as a teenager, I put two and two together and found it hilariously funny.
But no one remembers this and in the place I remember it being, there is basically just a normal redneck bar, such as would make more sense in, like, Yorkville or New Hartford or so on.
I distinctly remember it, though.
-
when I ran cross country in high school, we had this one brutal workout where we ran up and down this really long, steep hill.
People would try to shirk going all the way up, and so our coach stood at the top and demanded that we touch the Manhole at the top every time. TOUCH THAT MANHOLE, DAN. TOUCH IT.
and of course, jokes about "I'm gonna tell my mom coach made me touch his manhole... then we'll never have to do this again."
-
My high school's football coach was actually finally drummed out of the school district for molesting his players maybe... ten years after I graduated high school?
It was an open secret that he did but... I don't know. His dad was really well-connected and beyond that, the claims were so over-the-top brutal that I think a lot of parents didn't believe them.
Funny thing was, it wasn't that he was a SUCCESSFUL high school football coach. My high school set and I believe continues to hold the NYS record for the most games without a win, like three or four seasons straight of losses and one or two ties mixed in.
Got away with it for about twenty years straight, I guess. Had been kicked out of his first job for sexual misconduct too, it turned out, but got work at my school because his dad was well-connected.
Yeah, yeah basically I grew up in Twin Peaks, I dunno.
-

Oh, yeah, that absolutely blows. Also, that bit about the dispensaries was just to show some of the finer parts of Denver, sorry.
Today I want to the dispensary and then smoked in one of Denver's most beautiful parks with my friends from Oklahoma. They went home now I am tired as shit after doing cocaine and drinking the past three days after not drinking for a year and only doing cocaine 2-3 times during that time.
The park is the second best really. I live in the gay part of town- 3 blocks from Hamburger Marys, and this park is where the "bears" hook up. One time me and some friends were tripping there late at night and a friend picked up a container of vaseline. That was probably the grossest thing I have ever seen, though she didn't and maybe never really understood why. They are from a different part of town.
-
I want to tell my favorite story from when I was in Paris, but it isn't funny if I can't imitate this guy's french accent for you.
also it is a story about a picture, but, recently someone said something which makes me not want to link to pictures of my friends. even if they are publicly available?
basically they saw a bar called THE BEAR'S DEN and BEAR'S DEN is the name of the cafeteria at my school, so they took a picture of themselves in front of it.
then a guy came out, who was a Bear, and said, you have to have some bears in the picture! so he and his friends got in the picture.
then my friend explained, in mediocre french, why they wanted this picture.
then he said, in heavily-accented english "you don't KNOW what a bear is... it's... A BIG HAIRY GAY MAN!"
-
That was probably the grossest thing I have ever seen, though she didn't and maybe never really understood why. They are from a different part of town.
Oh man. If I was high, I would explain it in SUCH a giddy manner.
"It is so they can have sex! With the ASS! It is so they could have ASS SEX! To lubrciate the asshole, you understand. So... so they could have sex."
Being able to ramble that out would be SO worth having been so utterly grossed out.
-
the downtown area in Denver where they have the MOMA is quite impressive. I guess it was custom designed for tourists. The streets are very wide, with few cars. You really feel comfortable there. The noise and crowding from excessive traffic and cars parked all over really is detrimental to the experience of many cities. You maybe don't realize how detrimental cars are to the city experience, until you see an area like this downtown area in Denver, and you realize what a difference a reduction in automobile traffic can make.
Maybe I just got lucky and visited on a day when there wasn't a lot of traffic, but either way, the streets were wide and you really felt comfortable there. I guess it was an old warehouse district that had been converted into a downtown area. It was a mixture I guess of residential lofts and tourist attractions and businesses.
It seemed like a nicer experience than say, New York or Chicago, but then again, if I had the choice, I wouldn't live in any city I guess.
-
Despite a degree of paleness that makes summer an endless loop of slathering on goop to ward off the burning death orb's cancer rays, the invasion of tourists, and the bugs, I am pro-summer. Lack of sunlight bums me out something fierce.
Summer in New York, however? Fuck. that. noise.
The only difference between neighborhoods is the price of the alcohol that gets turned into vomit and urine; and the dog food into piles of poo on the sidewalk. I'll take DC's stinky gingko trees over NY sidewalks any day.
-
"
Weird, sb. This is the first post of yours I've seen, guess I've just missed all the threads you've posted in.
Anyway, now that I'm getting into it's groove, I'm starting to enjoy this summer. But what I said still stands. NY is summer-awful. And I'm proud of the anti-summer movement my rambling spawned.
I guess it's just because I played handball a few times and am looking foward to having a hot-handball summer. Plus all my great superb-quality counterfeit jerseys came in the mail, so that is a summer good. Then there is the Woodstock trip again comin up.
I'm gonna post a picture on facebook and tag everyone I've ever played handball with or talked about it with and be all like inspiring heads to play. Hell, I'm about to make a thread to discuss your handball histories.
-
Another day of 100 degrees, I say indeed fuck this.
-
I wonder what that grease spill on U St is going to smell like once it hits 100 degrees outside...
-
Ash, PLEASE come and get ours. You are welcome to it.
I am beginning to worry that this is one of those years that I am going to spend the whole summer with a sick headache.
-
The stress on the power grid is hitting red levels here in the north east. According to an interview with the local power company CEO, the only reason it hasn't popped into blackout is because the industrial recession has decreased energy demand.
Was this mentioned in the 'daily things that piss me off thread': People who hate A/C and complain that it is making things comfortable for everyone else.
-
I actually do hate AC, I feel it will be soon enough to be refrigerated when I am dead. But sometimes it is clearly the lesser of two evils.
-
Look kids, I <3 Summer.
For work on Monday I was standing outside a homeless shelter that smelled of pee with a bunch of intoxicated people, in the direct sun, helping a young couple move out of the shelter and into their home (yay!). I was wearing a sundress and it was just so nice to feel the warmth on my skin. I suppose only getting 3 months of warmth helps one appreciate it. It was 86F, which is not so bad , but I was hauling boxes. Also I like to sweat. Also I have an air conditioned home, workplace and vehicle (all of which I prefer not to use too much), so the time spent in the hot is minimal and usually for enjoyment.
I do remember the days in our disgusting rental unit, trying to sleep in the hot humidity, and it was just gross. I remember getting furious when my husband would try to even sort of touch me. Hot sticky skin on skin is so not my thing.
-
I'll take DC's stinky gingko trees over NY sidewalks any day.
Then I guess you didn't go to wash sq park, which is perpetually wreaking of ginkgo.
-
I've been holed up in my apartment working on projects for the past few days, but I rode my bike around the city today to run some errands and goddamn is it tough to stay hydrated. I must have gone through close to a gallon of water in a couple hours and I swear it all immediately came right back out my pores.
Not complaining though. I love the heat! Not when it is radiating off the cars at stoplights though. That is a bit much.
-
Should I buy a kiddie wading pool and lie in the backyard in it? Or should I just stay indoors and turn down the AC till it feels like a morgue?
-
But seriously: I have people on Facebook telling me they set their AC at 72 degrees. I wonder what would happen if I did that.
-
72 is kind of nuts. I have mine set to 86-88 because my workstation will start crashing from the heat if I let it get any warmer. I really wish I was on the first floor 'cause this stone building keeps it nice and cool down there.
I've been real tempted to sleep on my roof lately.
-
Are you people in the twilight zone!?!? The highest temperature our AC's go up to is like 72. The standard is like 66-60.
They're pretty old though, and are mostly shot, but still. At 72, they would probably shut off.
-
Seriously? The lowest we ever set ours is 80. I have no idea what relationship there is between that and the actual temperature of the house, of course, it might be only a very rough correlation.
-
I have a really old analogue thermostat though. If it was a digital one it might not go that high. Plus keeping it on the warm side means my lady will almost immediately shed clothing when she comes over.
-
I am talking thermostat setting.
-
It's 75 in my condo right now. I love "all utilities included"
-
Yeah, I was talking about AC temp output. We don't got this fancy coolin'.
-
The whole point of an A/C is to get your house back down into the low 60s.
I can't sleep if we're in the seventies.
I was more or less designed to live in a cave.
-
this makes me want to get a thermometer and figure out what temperature my room normally is.
at night I set the window unit to 65 or so. Not sure how cold the room actually gets.
I have a nasty habit where I want to sleep under a blanket in the summer. So maybe I should start setting it to a higher temperature to teach myself A LESSON.
-
Yeah, but out of curiosity... what do you crazy kids pay for electricity per kWh?
-
the internet says 9.49 cents, but I am getting this from a random blog post that came up when I did a search for "AmerenUE how much per kwh."
-
A little over 7 cents a Kwh here.
-
15.84, WELCOME TO HIGH COST OF LIVING
-
A-C pays a lot to run his A/C.
-
I keep mine at 78 (thermostat setting, digital) during the day and run a fan to circulate the air in the living room because our older home has a shortage of registers on the main floor.
When Pedro comes home, he usually complains and turns down the thermostat to 74. But it's programmable, and he rarely notices that it goes back up to 76 after dinner and 80 again overnight. The bedrooms are significantly cooler than the living room, so once we're in bed for the night the thermostat setting is basically irrelevant. I don't know what we pay per kwH, but our bill for an 1800 square foot house is usually in the $100 - $150 range, depending on the season (we have gas heat).
Wombles, I suggest turning the thermostat down to 76 and setting up an oscillating fan. The kiddie pool would work for a little while, but you'd have to keep refilling it with cold water (the sun heats up a couple of inches of water pretty quickly), and sunburn is a bitch.
-
I was going to put the pool in the shade. What is making me hesitate is that it will kill all the grass under it.
-
Beach umbrella. Plus move it around every few days.
-
A beach umbrella is an intriguing idea. It would provide shade but I wouldn't have to worry that it was dying because it is 100 degrees and hasn't rained in weeks.
-
If you didn't possess an unreasonable fear of comfort, you could turn on the A/C and move on with your life as normal. The animals would probably appreciate this as well.
-
My life as normal involves going outdoors, though. The AC doesn't help with that.
-
My life as normal involves going outdoors, though. The AC doesn't help with that.
That's your first mistake.
I have spent years cultivating a life that requires very little sustained contact with nature, and I'm pretty pleased about that.
-
I managed to spend a whole week at the beach without getting significantly sunburned. Then I went to the ballpark yesterday and got sunburned as fuck, but only only the left side of my body.
-
I spent the day at the beach, in an area where there are dunes, and I had a little private alcove for me and the pup. The dog didn't like to get into the lake because the water was pretty rough on the shore, but there were some run off ponds that I would take him into to cool off.
In other news, apparently it is not cool to take your dog to the local beach, or rather there is one part of the lake where dogs aren't allowed because there is a patrol, then there is another part of the same lake where they are allowed. I don't understand this because everyone's kids are pissing and shitting up a storm in saggy oozy bottoms, right in the lake , but apparently my dog, who pisses far away from the water on trees, and shits in the bushes (which I bag), is somehow unwelcome.
In still other news, apparently having a teenager tell me to move along to some other area after carrying all my gear up over the super steep 12 ft dunes on a hot day makes me ornery to the point where I got in my vehicle and pouted for a bit, considering going home. Then I bought a slushie and convinced myself to go to the dog-friendly area, which turned out to be nicer anyway. I told myself I didn't drive an hour and a half just to have an annoying beach patrol teen ruin my day. Lazing with the pup in the sun, along with a good book was pretty rad in the end.

Fuzzy tomato-head fist bump.
Took the kid to a water park. Plenty of sunscreen on her and me - except for the part most exposed to the sun following morning haircuts...
Edit: Good God, are those liver spots?

I have given up on haircuts for a while.
I don't have much longer because I start going bald and/or gray so I'm just growing this shit out while I still can.
ALSO: I don't feel respectable so why look the part?
-
on the other hand, I may have finally realized that I feel a lot better when I have short, neat hair.
As much as I want to pull off the "shaggy indie rock whatever" look, it just makes my head look huge.
On the other hand, girls seem to like that look.
-
Edit: Good God, are those liver spots?
Just wait til' you get 'em on your gotdang hands!
-
just when I get used to one aspect of summer, another one comes along.
I don't remember it being this dark and still a few weeks ago. Went to a free music thing in the Botanical Gardens. Even after the sun went down, it was 1000000 degrees, humid, and windless. It is like being covered in a blanket.
-
which reminds me:
in an AC-less house, you're supposed to have windows closed during the day, but open at night, right? Bring in cool air at night, then trap it inside?
I feel like having windows open in the middle of the day just means hot outside air is coming in.
-
Did that ever work Wombles?
Because we touched 40d* yesterday and are looking at staying there for a while so I'm hoping the hilltop wishing thing worked out for you.
It worked for a while, but today and tomorrow are going to be scorchers. Maybe you better go for another ride.
-
I cannot imagine not having A/C at this point in my life. When I was 17 I spent the summer in an un-air-conditioned dorm in Winston-Salem, and it was abject misery. But then, the lows at night during that record-setting summer were in the mid-80s, so it never really cooled off and it never. once. rained.
-
I have AC in my room, but I'm trying to use it as little as possible. I normally use it at night, and set it to "fan" when I'm in my room during the day.
-
I have a no a/c apt. It is whatever during the day, but we are having that same hot as fuck at night thing. It should be cold when you sleep. That should be a rule.

Annnnnnd Canada and America fuckin' turns this thread around to the OTHER meaning applicable to the phrase "fuck summer".
Well-done. Organically developed to that point, too, not at all forced.
-
Ha ha... who would of thought Canada would be a top in this situation?
Also - we've had our second wet soggy summer in a row 'round my neck of the woods, which equals fleas all around, which equals my dog has fleas, which equals housework X1000000, which equals "fuck summer."
-
They call it an air conditioner, but it is not an air conditioner. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zR9CA8lJGvs)
It's probably cheaper to run than an air conditioner, though.
Also we are currently reaching into the 90s here, and the people are full of panic. I'm thinking about stepping up the "install a cool roof" plan.
-
I was wondering about that, but then wouldn't the energy spent by the freezer heat the apartment up more than you are cooling it by? I guess if you have the freezer in a basement and the fan/cooler upstairs it can transfer the heat to a cooler part of the house.
Better than doing this (http://canadianapplianceparts.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/refrigerator_ac.jpg) in any case.

+1 for duct tape engineering ingenuity
-10 for failing thermodynamics.
-
The a/c in my apartment is out. The a/c in my car works only intermittently. Fuck summer. Fuck summer so hard.

not the way it wants, either.

My friend pulled off this piece of engineering when his computer started blowing up in the heat. There is a tube going from his AC to a fan on the floor which is blowing on his computer. There is a carpet at the tube/fan intersection to reduce moisture blowing into his rig. Look what heat has reduced us to.

Well, my parents' deli has a new air conditioner so the summer isn't half as bad as it started out. And for like seven days straight I've either biked, played handball or soccer or both so I'm getting into decent shape and my endurance is skyrocketing. Just wish my ankle would heal, and it would if the dudes would let me go a day without playing soccer.
Hey ACAP is the quote in your sig from Duke Nukem or from They Live? I just watched They Live for no reason like a week ago. I want to watch The Thing in a really well air conditioned room. Maybe I should move a TV to the deli for that one.
-
It is from They Live, which was awesome. The whole movie is on google video, but this is the scene:

I am tanner than I have ever been, I think. I have the most intense sock tan ever.
Also, my neck is super red.

The a/c in my apartment is working again. So I got home last night and noticed it wasn't blowing cold air. Gave it an hour and a half, and then put in a maintenance request. It actually started working again later last night, but I was so busy at work today I forgot to call and let my apartment office know. I got home with a note on my door: "Your a/c is performing very well. I would suggest setting the temp to between 70° and 75° when home." First, now I feel kind of stupid. I almost want to call and let them know I'm not a fucktard who can't operate his thermostat, that it really wasn't blowing cold air, and I gave it some time before I called it in. It doesn't help that I think the maintenance guys already hate me (even though I've only really called in one other maintenance request before) Second, that's way too low. It's pretty fuck*ng hot here right now and I'd like to keep my power bill below $60. 78° has been working fine for me.

Another pleasantly hot, breezy summer's day predicted for Britain-land tomorrow
-
I am taking some much needed time off in a week. I am torn between old school camping and renting up a delux cabin. Both have their merits.
-
It's past the solstice but it just keeps getting bloody colder. Google tells me it'll be 68/40 F tomorrow. I'm having to wear a jacket every day.
-
I almost forgot that while we're bitching about the heat, Doc's in the dead of winter.
I have an idea -- let's have a TOUAMB convention in Queensland next July! 68F sounds lovely about now.
-
Sounds good. We can ship oball up for the occasion. I only have two couches though so there might have to be sharing.

Brilliant.
Somehow I met two blokes from Melbourne last night. We didn't talk weather none, but if there was some snow on the ground right now, my slight hangover would be cured.

another home made A/C (http://thereifixedit.com/2010/07/23/white-trash-repair-redneck-ac/)
-
I love There, I Fixed it. Some of their articles have me in stitches.
-
I tried a similar thing with the heater core of my dodge caravan. When I removed the dash, the core was just sitting there. So I put a 12 volt fan on it. Well, that didn't work.
in other news, my thermometer at work said it was 97 today. I grabbed an expensive and calibrated fluke pyrometer we use for checking the temp of parts that come out of the oven, and it said that my thermometer was 100 degrees. So, the actual temp was somewhere in there.
-
it would be nice if the humidity dropped below 57% so i wouldn't have to do something drastic.
-
you could just get a dehumidifier. I'm very satisfied with my Lowes special. It has a digital thermostat. It seems to turn on and off in a more calculated way. I dislike electronic shit because it can and will eventually break, whereas an analog control will last forever and can be easily repaired if it breaks... but the superior performance of the electronic control heuristics are certainly nothing to sneeze at when it comes to dehumidifiers.
-
Only 57%? It's been over 80% here.
How humid is that? It's so humid that every time I go outside, my glasses fog up immediately, and I have to wipe them twice just to get from my front door to my car.
That's humid.
-
Only 57%? It's been over 80% here.
it's not been below 80% for ya'll? damn, that _is_ humid.
you could just get a dehumidifier.
yeah, i'm sure that would clear up that pesky humidity problem in no time. what size do you recommend for clearing up an entire geographical region, or do you think i should just check in with my local lowe's sales associate?
in local news, "posting an absurd request of the universe onto the interweb" once again worked better than blood sacrifice when humidity levels indicated on my front porch dipped to 55% yesterday.
hooray for a kind and loving universe who only listens if there is an rss feed.
-
Yeah, today's the first day in about a month when the humidity hasn't been over 95%. Sucks.
Hey Ark!
-

Hey Ark!
hey dude.
i know, i left the house and was flabbergasted that it was nice out. what the fuck am l supposed to do now? be happy and enjoy a breeze?
stupid weather.
-
yeah, it is pretty damn nice out here, too.
-
I've got hella chubbs thinking about New York autumn. I'm gonna be jogging and biking at 5am (before going to sleep). Bike over all the NY bridges on windy evenings. Playing football and soccer over hell of evenings. Crunching leaves all day. Plus fall is the most fashionable season. I can finally whip out all the sexy clothes I've bought since like Christmas.
Also I got to pass my tests and get a job, so hopefully the fall-energy can help me with that.
Is so good.
-
That sounds like a September job to me. Pool open at least two more weeks here.
-
Welp, it looks like the worst of the hot weather is behind us for another year and it seems we all survived.
Oh well, nothing but a luxuriously mild east Texas winter ahead. *sigh*
-
that is a fine ce-ment pond, asherdan.
-
It hovered around 104 F multiple times in July and Aug, and it'll get down to -22 F or lower in four months. I like the marked changes of season, but I'd take 104 F over -22 F any day.
PS - nice pool Ash.
-
I wish I had a spot for a pool. We may someday have a hot tub.
It got up to the mid 90s this year, but in general the summer here kind of sucked and appears to be over now.
Also: nice pool, A.
-
On the positive tip, we saw Crowded House, Toad the Wet Sprocket (again), Misfits (again - sorry, Wombles), Buzzcocks (holy crap that was an awesome show) and the Dead Weather. Also we went on a cruise.
-
We flew down to Miami and hung out there for a day or two (a place I would not like to live) and then cruised to the Bahamas for four days, then back for another couple days in Miami. Just a touch rainy, but a lot of fun.
I should mention that at the Buzzcocks show I got to do something I never thought I'd have the opportunity to do: headbutt a blind guy.
-

Live the dream, Nabu.
-
I should mention that at the Buzzcocks show I got to do something I never thought I'd have the opportunity to do: headbutt a blind guy.
Oh man... there have been a few things I have done for a blind guy that I never thought I would. I think I mentioned once upon a time, how I briefly worked at a porn video store and chose porn for a blind guy, but beyond that, there was an outage of my time here when I worked in HIV care and some disturbing interactons with a different blind guy. I could tell tails. They are of "the saddest thing" variety.
-
I'm a bit surprised I didn't just go to like -13,000 cans.
To be fair, it was a crazy slapstick kind of headbutt. I was trying to help him look for his jacket which he'd left under a chair, and we both leaned over at the same time and I clocked him in the eyebrow. He had a look on his face like "this is all I fuck*ng need". I thought it was pretty funny.
And by look for I mean look for in my case and grope for in his.
-
What does a blind guy do with porn? Listen to the moans?
-
He goes to porn stores to hear the cashier girl talk to him about porn.
-
What does a blind guy do with porn? Listen to the moans?
My thoughts exactly. "Super Screamers #7."
-
No he was into DP/anal, or this is what the store owner's mail-order Russian bride told me when she was training me anyway. I'm pretty sure renting them was a part of the deal for him though. He was apologetic and told me he was a "bad man" for renting them, and 17 year old me was like " no... you're... um... not, I guess... That will be $12.89." At the time, I didn't know what DP was by the way - I mean I figured it out by the pictures on the cases, but even then I didn't know it was... at the same time. This was back before the internet was a serious thing. An innocent time before Napster and such.
This is a thing that happened, in real life. It still baffles me.
Oh, man. Napster. What a throw-back.

How many blind men does it take to find DP pornography on the internet?

How any blind men does it take to find DP pornography on the internet?
I'm not sure, but if you want to help out the cause, you could always record an audio description of any old porno site you like (http://pornfortheblind.org/record) for the visually impaired at http://pornfortheblind.org/ (http://pornfortheblind.org/) (nsfw).
I just listened to the description of Big Sausage Pizza, and it's sort of weird how bored the guy who's describing the site sounds, and also how it turns into a PSA for a charity at the end. Also, further listening of other audio clips makes clear that some descriptions are just jokes like the www.elvisrape.com one, while others are oddly serious descriptions of porn sites and clips.
Yes, you can watch porn and do volunteer work at the same time.
-
Nice. So does that mean my subscription to Asshole Fever may be tax deductible?
-
Sometimes when you type in a captcha it says you're helping the blind like that and I like to try to imagine what filthy sentence they're from. Like "stifling unguent" or something.

Dear Summer,
Come back you goddam bitch! Don't make me come after you or I'm gonna slug you up so good I'll be able to sell you for a Picasso! Remember how I stood up for you? Remember how ever one was talking you down and I took you in and let you wash your hair and cleaned the scabs off your knees and gave you a meal or three? You ungrateful whore, you gonna throw all we had in my face and run off on me!?!
You bitch, you come back here I outta cut your damn throat and feed you to the turtles crotch first!
I love you baby, I need you, don't hurt me or yourself like this...come on back home.

She's living here in Houston still. But I can see a faraway look in her eyes.
-
Ah baby, I knew you'd come back to me. Forget those fools, you know I'll treat you right.
This post is from a man who just got done organising his new years celebrations on a beautiful beach in the middle of summer. Because that's how we roll.
-
last summer my girlfriend worked for an organization that recorded audio descriptions of things for the blind.
her favorite story is that once they were doing the comics page, and it was like;
Old man: yes, so, beetle bailey says, gee, it's our anniversary, I got you something we can both enjoy
my gal: oh wow, you're such a swell guy!
old man: and now he's pulling out... what is that? string? or something?
my gal: that's... that is thong underwear.
old man: underwear? that can't be underwear. What? what's the joke?
my gal: it's underwear. he got her... he got her underwear.
today it felt like Spring in Saint Louis. it was weird.

Shit, that page is fantastic. I found something to replace achewood in my morning routine.

Com-Curm is some good shit.
The way it deconstructed the batshit way "For Better or For Worse" collapsed in on itself was Legendary Win.

Man, I haven't read the mudge in a long while.
