Oh man. This is sad news, the Beastie Boys (http://www.beastieboys.com) were such a big part of my youth.
-
Yeah, this is fucked and it has been a bad week.
-
brass monkeys tonight, across the USA.
-
im glad his health woes are gone.
edit: i just realized dude was the same age as my mom. damn.
-
I was thinking about MCA last night. I've always believed taking a Bodhisattva Vow is one of the most beautiful, selfless acts a Buddhist can take on, and I hope that in the end he was able to reach enlightenment and usher many people toward a better way to be in the world.
-
Dude was definitely a net positive for the planet.
-
I liked the Beastie Boys even though I rarely enjoyed their music.
-
Now I am one of those bandwagon people, because for many years I have not liked the beastie boys. After a night of brass monkeys and blasting them in our apartment, I am a fan.
-
Beasties have a huge pile of great shit, so enjoy digging in if that's the direction you go. I've spent the evening drinking and watching Seau stuff on the sports channels, so I probably did not have as much fun as you did. (Plus the missus is sick so we didn't go to a show where I would have had the first meeting with an "interested party" but whatevs.)
-
It might be because I am super bored, but this is like the saddest celebrity death for me, since Johnny Cash certainly, but probably ever. He was the person who I have listened to most who has died, except for Sparklehoss dude, but he killed himself and it seemed like his life was pretty sad, so that is a bit different?
Anyways, yeah, I'm sad and shit. The Beastie Boys I dug early because they had at least two rhymes about Bob Dylan on Paul's Boutique. So, the 15-17 y.o. Keith who only really cared about Dylan let the Beastie Boys into my life. Also, they had a rhyme about Kerouac on that album that I thought was cool as fuck.
Know alota def girls that would do anything
A lot of parents like to think I'm a villain
I'm just chillin' like Bob Dylan
I smoke cheeba it helps me with my brain
I might be a little dusted but I'm not insane
People come up to me and they try to talk shit man
I've been making records since you were sucking on your mother's dick
Cause I'm running things like some Mack motherfucker
Your only claim to fame is you're a false fake sucker
You slip you slack you clock me you lack
While I'm reading on the road by my man Jack Kerouac
Poetry in motion coconut lotion
I always thought he said poetry in motion, tokin up lotion. I still think he does.

I was never a huge Beastie Boys fan, though I've always loved Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head. One of my friends used to listen to Licensed to Ill all the time and I found a lot of that album a little irritating. But when he started playing Paul's Boutique I was sold. And as another huge teenage Dylan fan I was floored when I heard them sample him on Check Your Head. Who else in hip hop has sampled Bob Dylan? And yeah, that chillin' like Bob Dylan line was rad.

I am a huge Beastie Boys fan who only listens to/likes Paul's Boutique and Check Your Head. And that song with q-tip on Ill Communication. Phone is ringing, oh my god! Anyways, yeah, sometimes I say I am a huge fan of a band, but what I mean is I like one or two albums. Like, I would be all I love Ty Segall, but what I really mean is I love Ty Segall- Melted. The Beastie Boys have two albums I consider awesome, which puts them above most bands I would say are awesome/I love/whatever. Oh, also, that instrumental that is Check Your Head and Ill Communication stuff/style is fuck*ng sick. In Sound from Way Out or somesuch.
-
I had a private MCA memorial run this morning. It was good. Inev, the Sounds of Science Anthology is really good, if you're band wagon jumping that's a good entry point for a nice mix of the classics as well as some fun weird stuff too. Kinda sad that the cover has them all dressed up as old men hanging out...
-
"The Mix Up" is a pretty fun album.
-
Now I am one of those bandwagon people, because for many years I have not liked the beastie boys. After a night of brass monkeys and blasting them in our apartment, I am a fan.
It's okay to jump on bandwagons. What's douchy is to pretend you were a fan all along.
-
It is totally cool to jump on a music bandwagon. It's not cool to jump on a sports bandwagon because all the teams that attract said bandwagon fans automatically attract douchebags (looking at all of you, sudden Pats fans).
-

Very good point.

Dare I say, a better point? Maybe not, but just as good. Although, I knew somebody who would change allegiances in the middle of a game. He was totally upfront about it, so it didn't bug me. He said that he hated to root for the losing team. It's not how I feel about sports but at least he was honest. Red Sox fans post '04 are the worst. Actually, I don't like Red Sox fans much at all. Don't get me wrong, some of my best friends are Sox fans. But they've always been insufferable.
Anyway, back to the Beastie Boys. I listened to Check Your Head and Pauls' Boutique last night and damn those are good albums. So good. I wish I would have gone to see them more often. I'm sure they'll still perform but it won't be quite the same. I saw them at Sasquatch in 2007. They did a set earlier in the day where they were playing instruments. It wasn't entirely instrumental because I remember them playing Gratitude, but I remember it being mostly instrumental. Anyway, that was awesome. They headlined that night too, but I was cold and coming down off a few different drugs so I only lasted for like half the show. That was the year I determined that getting drunk and high nearly always ruins concerts for me.
-
I went ahead and never saw them. Of course, I was never anywhere they were playing.
Maybe we should have a thread about the bands we've seen that make the most people jealous because it's too late to see them now.
-
I never saw Nirvana. Anyone here get the chance to see them?
-
I didn't but my wife did.
-
I kind of imagine that one day I will tell someone I saw all the Nashville garage bands (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2012/mar/25/east-nashville-garage-rock-scene-feature) I am into, and they will be impressed. When I saw a bunch of these guys in Brooklyn 2008 I was the only person there who wasn't a Nashville local or a person in a cool NYC band. Like, literally, people were coming up to me and asking who I was because I was the only person there they didn't recognize. That felt like maybe the coolest I will ever be.
I also saw MGMT a few years before that song got big, and told my friends "this song is going to be big." They made fun of me.
-
i saw nirvana. halloween '93, the meat puppets opened and the first act was a japanese chick-rock band that was not named shonen knife. fuck*ng incredible.
-

I thought we already had that thread every time Ash needles me about all the times he saw Oingo Boingo.
-

Segovia and Miles Davis are the ones who immediately jump to mind.
Glad I got to see Zappa before he died, also The Band just before Richard Manuel went.
-
I saw Nirvana at JC Dobbs in Philly. They played 45 minutes, no encore. It was a bit underwhelming, actually.
I saw Smashing Pumpkins when they were still good. Twice, in fact. That was some good shit.
-
this reminds me, I should go see Chuck Berry.
A friend from the radio station grew up in Augusta, GA, home of James Brown. He said he always figured he should go see him some time, but always put it off.
-
this reminds me, I should go see Chuck Berry.
Saw him at W.I.L.D.
-
I saw P-Funk at WILD. All the other performers I saw sucked.
Do you guys remember that I got peed on when I saw p-funk? Man, that was a time. Remember when I was so bad at getting laid? Now my excuse is "she's in Chicago" instead of "sorry I think some guy peed on me."
-

Man, I could have gone to see P-Funk for free last week, but I couldn't get anybody to go with me and I wimped out because I was "tired". Stupid me.
-
I take issue with Ash including G n R and No Doubt - they have to make other people jealous, not embarrassed for you.
Zingo!
My only one is probably Stevie Ray Vaughan. Pretty much everybody else good I've seen you can still see. Well, Poison Idea while Pig Champion was still alive, but he was plowed and couldn't play and threw up on himself so I'm not sure it should be included.
I saw Seau play a few times. I'll count that.
-
But don't go see Oingo Boingo because if wombat can't neither can you.
But I saw them heaps of times.......whoops, sorry Wombat.
I also saw Sublime, inadvertently as it happens. It was one of these package shows radio stations do and I went to see Chris Isaak and Elastica. They didn't want to play Date Rape (which was their only radio tune at that time) because 'you could just turn on the radio to hear that'.
-
I fell in with a bad crowd at an impressionable age!
-
I know I'm late as hell (as always) but my excuse is that the internet is always a year late in Alaska.
Did everyone see Fight For Your Right (Revisited) (http://youtu.be/evA-R9OS-Vo)?
-

They e-mailed me a copy with the last album but I haven't yet to actually watch it. I always see the half-hour run-time and decide to do something else instead.
-
I believe MCA directed it. It's really worth watching, I think. Hell, how much time do you spend here in a week?
-
Man, I could have gone to see P-Funk for free last week, but I couldn't get anybody to go with me and I wimped out because I was "tired". Stupid me.
I skipped them when I was in Seattle couple months ago because I was "sick." I've already seen them twice. Although it absolutely won't be the same without Gary Shidder. But I'll see them again if I get the opportunity.
In fact, you know what I would kill for maybe more than any concert? A Funkadelic show from the early 70s. This one, for example (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=PGgxuajwFJY). I'm not sure if the album contains the entire setlist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Live:_Meadowbrook,_Rochester,_Michigan_%E2%80%93_12th_September_1971), but the only thing missing is Can You Get to That. Add that and it's a perfect show. Holy shit, to see Eddie Hazel.
I take issue with Ash including G n R and No Doubt - they have to make other people jealous, not embarrassed for you.
If he saw G n R on the club circuit in like '86, or even when they were touring behind Appetite for Destruction, I say it counts.
i saw nirvana. halloween '93, the meat puppets opened and the first act was a japanese chick-rock band that was not named shonen knife. fuck*ng incredible.
Oh my god. This one so far makes me the most jealous. Replace the japanese chick-rock band with a very young Built to Spill, throw in Mudhoney and Pavement, and you have the ultimate early 90s concert.
-
Ooh, I thought of another good one. I saw Jeff Buckley. Not once, but twice.
I may have told this story already, but what the hell. The first time I saw him (both shows were at the old 9:30 Club in DC), he hadn't blown up on local alternative radio yet, but people who knew good music knew him, so the club was pretty crowded. He did "Hallelujah" by himself, voice and guitar, let the rest of the band have a break. And during one pause in the song, that club was dead freaking silent. No idle chatter, no clinking of glasses, just every single person there utterly riveted. It's perhaps the most amazing moment of any concert I've ever been to. It just took my breath away.
I saw him again six months later after he'd become more popular. That same moment was marred by idiots going "WHOOOOOOOO!"
-
You didn't actually watch the Great White portion, did you? (I guess if you had, you wouldn't be here now.)
-
when mrs. worked at a theater in clearwater, we saw willie nelson and (separately) stephen wright. both great shows, hard to say which was better
-
I blame living in Alaska for my shocking lack of awesome concert experiences.
My first concert was the Scorpions, and we were happy to have them!

I hung out with Willie Nelson once outside his tour bus after a show while dude sat on a stool and visited and signed for fans until everyone of them was gone.
Dude didn't need to sit in a parking lot for an hour doing that, but he did as a regular thing.
Kenny Rogers, on the other hand, jumped in the limo and was driven through scads of fans, shoving them to the side of the road, he was in such a hurry to get out. He didn't pop a window or wave or nothing, either.
Maybe he was in a hurry to go get some yardbird.
-
You gotta know when to walk away, know when to run.
-
I have only been to a handful of concerts ever, but I did see George Thorogood open for the Steve Miller Band back in '98 or '99, somewhere around there. They're both still touring but it was pretty awesome to see them together.
I've also seen Rush twice, but that's one of those "love 'em or hate 'em bands" so who knows what that's worth. And of course the recent shows have been nerdcore, TMBG, and Weird Al. What a great performer Al is -- that's going to be one that people ought to be jealous of in 30 years or so, whether they actually are or not.
I saw Alanis Morisette back in the day because a friend broke up with his girlfriend a few weeks before the show, so he gave the tix to us instead. I'm not proud of that one.
-

found it: boredoms (http://www.nirvanaguide.com/1993.php#show_931030)
-
I certainly know that I've discussed this before (and I will again and again) but I've played with Sam Henry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wipers).
Also, I saw George Thorogood a couple of years after Bad to the Bone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bad_to_the_Bone_(album)) came out. I didn't know until today that Ian Stewart (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ian_Stewart_(musician)) appeared on that record. He certainly wasn't at the show I saw.
-
JESUS CHRIST BOREDOMS.
I do not listen to them that much, but when I am in a boredoms mood all I do is blast boredoms all day. This has lead many of my friends to think that they are my favorite band.
Holy shit, Boredoms.
-
I'm really happy I saw Comets on Fire before they went on their indefinite hiatus.
I'm still heartbroken I moved after I had bought tickets to see The Raincoats and Shellac. Those were easy to sell but hard to part with. Electric Wizard is playing their first show in 10 years at the maryland death fest (though they are much more stoner doom metal than death metal) and I'm going to be extremely disappointed to miss that, too.
Though Death Grips (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UBS8vfuEd8&feature=related) are coming to town soon. That should be a really fun show.
I don't think I really have many concert experiences that would make people immediately jealous, but I do have a lot that are extremely special to me. I did get to go backstage and meet Donovan once because a friend was an assistant producer on one of his recent records, does that count? He stayed in what I think of as the Donovan "character" the whole time he was chatting with people.
-
my roommate just told me this, but it happened the day MCA left for the big party in the sky: he was riding the bus home and blasting Intergalactic on his headphones. He heard something weird. He took them off, and the guy in the seat behind him was rapping along! He turned around and they shouted/rapped along to the song for a few lines. Everyone else was staring at them and stuff. Awesome.
-
I don't think I really have many concert experiences that would make people immediately jealous, but I do have a lot that are extremely special to me.
This is where I'm at.
-
Awesome moment.
So great
-
I don't really remember most of them, so I could be wrong, but the only one I went, "oh that fucker" was Ash and Minutemen. Fuck you, Brokowski.
I don't really have any either? Radiohead after Hail to Thief. The Rapture when they were good (touring off first album). Sonic Youth and Broken Social Scene have broken up or are on hiatus since I saw them. My favorite shows have got to be Jonathan Richman with like 4 other people in the crowd, Supergrass- opening for Radiohead in 2003 at the Woodlands in Houston, absolutely no one was there to see them at this huge venue. I yelled a request they stopped their other song to play and they said thank you by throwing us a drum stick. That Rapture show and the first time I saw Spindrift. That might be it actually. Oh, My Bloody Valentine. Even though it was a reunion tour that is probably the best/most eye opening/powerful/loudest (and I saw (reunion) Dinosaur Jr. in a tiny punk venue in OKC and Acid Mother's Temple at a barely bigger punk venue in Denver. They were playing an Auditorium that sits 3700. It still felt louder, which I don't think is usually the case.) show I have ever been to. It was fuck*ng incredible.
-
I suppose some people might be jealous of that deal I saw where Dinosaur Jr. were interviewed by Henry Rollins.
-
I just inadvertently discovered that I am getting Madeline Peyroux tickets for Mother's Day. This is kind of a big deal, she doesn't tour often and her tours don't make too many stops. But I guess she's a bit of a niche -- there aren't a lot of white people in their 30s who are into modern jazz.

I'm not ashamed of No Doubt because I saw them when they were still only an OC thing, all early adopter style.
I listen to No Doubt without shame. I like their music quite a lot. I got caught in a mosh pit of 10,000 kids at a No Doubt concert.
I took this photo (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/2682168249/).

Did everyone see Fight For Your Right (Revisited) (http://youtu.be/evA-R9OS-Vo)?
That was pretty fucked up. I really like that Make some Noise song though.
-

I've seen Weird Al 3 times now. So I won't be jealous.

Broken Social Scene have broken up or are on hiatus since I saw them.
I saw Broken Social Scene in a tiny club. They posed for a picture (http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmcd9/318814291/) after the show.
I actually have TOUAMB to thank for that show. One of their songs appeared on a mixtape that Starlight sent me. Otherwise I would have not known about them.
Supergrass- opening for Radiohead in 2003 at the Woodlands in Houston, absolutely no one was there to see them at this huge venue. I yelled a request they stopped their other song to play and they said thank you by throwing us a drum stick.
I was one of the 15 thousand people that showed up late for that show, which is rare for me. I like to watch the opening band because you never know when something amazing is going to happen.

I've only seen them at huge venues. Like Coachella and this outdoor summer concert series in Salt Lake. When I saw them at Coachella, one of the dudes proposed to his ladyfriend on stage.
-
I really liked when No Doubt covered this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXQYyKzyDaE). I did not know it was a cover until recently. but.

That is one of my favourite songs, and music videos, of all time.
