Title: Break-up songs
Post by: side_show on October 16, 2012, 10:44:53 pm
Well, since a few of you folks have been dealing with shit, I was thinking about break up songs, and how great they are.  Everyone has been there, and often, there is a soundtrack.  There's something so great about listing to a really depressing song to just get it all out.

My husband once sent me this tune  (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ-wI0xhges)back when we were dating and I was working in another city in another province and he just felt so far away.  I wept in my hotel room.   The Mountain Goats are one of his favorite bands, and also hubby talks to himself all the time, so this just sounded like him singing right to me in some way.

This song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6JnQbQbzdo) was the anthem to my most painful breakup.  Or pretty much the whole Dilate album. "You'll look like a photograph of yourself, taken from far, far away/ and I won't know what to do, I won't know what to say except/ Fuck you, and your untouchable face/ Fuck you for existing in the first place."  Yup, pretty much.

This song was, for me about the end of a relationship I was glad was over. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=libGh-j3hBQ)  "I don't know what you saw/ I want someone who sees me."  That's right.

And well,  this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfzRlcnq_c0) Just fantastic.  "I don't love you but I always will."  And that last moment of the video where they just stare at each other.

I heard this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rh4Tgefxm3M) for the first time the day my gal moved to Chicago. Fuck.

For some reason being sad about missing that girl mostly makes me want to listen to really aggressive hip-hop, or else overwhelmingly loud rock music.

Man, I was listening to that album all of last week, so good!

I am confused because I had listened to it many times, but somehow never heard that song.

Maybe you all will dig my theory?  So like, people call Neil young the grandfather of grunge or some shit, and you can kinda hear it on some of his albums and the dude liked shitty flannel- but this was his real contribution:  he is the first pop musician to have two kick ass albums basically devoted to depression?  I can't think of anyone else, except maybe hank Williams?  But I feel like with hank he is almost talking himself out of depression, where Neil is just describing it dead on throughout everybody knows and on the beach.

I mean, like when I think of how Nevermind and Neil Young are similar I would think of that?  And like those Neil Young songs (like half of Everybody Knows) where he just fuck*ng rocks.  But two of those are 9 minutes or so, so that doesn't really fit either.

More importantly, blasting this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQVZaeEmkOA) while driving fast on the highway and thinking about my next life moves.

That song is so fuck*ng good. God I love that song. You've mentioned it on the board before and I was a bit shocked because I felt it was kind of like my Neil Young song. Only because it seems no one else mentions it.

Well, since a few of you folks have been dealing with shit, I was thinking about break up songs, and how great they are.  Everyone has been there, and often, there is a soundtrack.  There's something so great about listing to a really depressing song to just get it all out.

I was thinking about break up songs today. Partly because I recently went through something like a break up, or not really a break up but something that just didn't work out, but mostly because of LFM's shit. (BTW, really sorry dude, that sucks so bad. I don't know you well but I know that anybody who likes Perfect From Now On as much as you do is going to be OK.)

And I happened to be listening to Jon Brion when I read this. I really like the one-two punch of Ruin My Day (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbxfykEw924) and Walking Through Walls (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-Sh3gItcrs) from his album Meaningless. The first one is kind of a typical (but well done I think) sad song and the second is like a "I could say fuck off but I don't give enough of a fuck to because I'm feeling pretty fuck*ng OK" type song.

My recent (well, for the past year or two I think) all-purpose feeling shitty album is The Meadowlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Meadowlands_%28album%29). These songs in particular:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7bXWsrs_B4
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3rTVfGr56s
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FditI_wlg6o
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZU3ywyEqq8
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POK_PEgGVLI

Good for break-ups and also for just generally shitty days where I worry excessively that I'm not where I should be at my age.

I never had break-up songs because no one ever broke up with me (it was I who broke up with all the [ridiculously low number] nice ladies I've been with so far). Small perk from never having had a reciprocated love, I guess, so yay?

Cheesy as it may be, I reckon a lot of people my age have someone for whom Pearl Jam's "Black" is specifically about. I sure do.

The Innocence Mission's You Chase the Light (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tqxaBAR5Jtw) is beautiful and sad. For someone who loves their work more than they love you.

For me, the main PJ track that is specific to an ex is "Rearview mirror" from '93.

I usually was on pretty good terms with my exes, mainly because most of my relationships were fairly casual and short-lived. Still, this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmIlUKo4dQc) (as upbeat is it is) still reminds me of a dude. (For those of you playing at home, no bonus points for guessing who.)

This one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k1q5NkMk_y0), for me.  These guys normally aren't my cup of tea, but the sentiments and actions (turning on all the lights, TV and radio to fill the emptiness) were right on.

Most definitely. My longest-standing crush.

This album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Change_%28album%29) was the soundtrack of my most significant breakup. I played it over and over. It spoke to my break up, but it's also a really good album.

I'd suggest this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Rzh_rv7yI4) but it might make you jump out of a tower.

I got embarrassed in the car today because I got really into this song. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KisHhIRihMY)
Luckily a few tracks later came this bad boy. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfzoyDOXfzY)

Oh man, Pale Blue Eyes. That song is tied significantly to two crushes. My previously mentioned longest standing, and also my most painful crush (in junior high/high school I had crushes instead of relationships for the most part. Mostly because my standards were far too high and I was pretty fucked up).

Coin Operated Boy (http://youtu.be/YAnyYTjjhJ0) was definitely in the voice of a girl who jerked me aroubd to the point that I decided did not want an actual relationship with a real human being. Of course I got over it and she and a good friend of mine are madly in love now so I was probably incorrect to generalise.

true story: just talked to the Ex for the first time in a while, and we traded youtube videos of sad songs. No mention of what was making us seek out sad songs.

She likes this one (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsYHN7eCCtU) and this one. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5nGVaLkCQAg) She said at one point she put the second one on repeat for an entire hour at work.

I can't say that I've ever listened to one song on repeat for an hour, but I can imagine that if it were that song I would not get bored with it. Wonderful song.
