Title: That awkward moment when...
Post by: side_show on November 22, 2012, 09:37:43 pm
...you see inside someone's house for the first time and realize they don't know the proper way to hang art/photos.

...you know you just spit on someone's face while talking enthusiastically.

For reals. I thought "not crooked" was basically all that matters. Or "barely crooked." Now I have another dumb thing to fret over.

I always figured that the only wrong way was to hit your thumb with the hammer instead of hitting the nail.

The centre of the image should be at approximate eye level to the viewer when standing comfortably in front of it, or if above furniture, no higher than 12 inches above the furniture.  Most people hang their art work and photos much too high, and it drives me crazy.  The whole point is to be able to look directly at the images.  That's what they're for.  This knowledge comes from having worked at and assistant managed an art gallery back in the day, but to me it's so common sense.  Why put a picture up that you have to crane your neck to look at (which is the most common hanging error).

... when you're at work and you think no one is around, and you fart or belch, then realize someone is right there.

When I first visited my fiances house I realized she had all her art way too high. It would only be right if the average visitor was about 6'7". I've been convincing her to hang new things at the proper level but there's one piece where only the very bottom edge is at eye level for me.

I've been thinking deeply about this and while it obviously makes sense for a gallery, the difference is that I have never stood in front of the art on my walls and looked at it from that position. I see it from across the room, or when I'm sitting on the couch, etc.

What about the rest of the wall? The ceiling? I want to put art everywhere on the wall.

Paul: it's the right thing to do but I got two widow-woman sis-in-law's, they got me straight out numbered sometimes.

Way I look at, it's a good thing to do, plus it gives you something to do other than listen to the sisters talk.  Double Bonus!

Have a can.

Now you get to sit down with her and fork the canned food directly to her?

The pug...not the sister-in-law. See Pedro, we still do this thing.

... when the pug in the cone decides to try to figure out how to drink water out of a bowl. Half a roll of paper towels down...

Yeah, it may be twelve days of handfeeding unless I can figure out the perfect size of bowl that she can't make a mess of.

If it were just the dog getting messed, fine, but I would prefer not to have a quart of water soaking into the hardwood floors.

I saw these Elizabethan collars (http://www.kongcompany.com/products/cats/grooming-and-e-collars/grooming-and-e-collars/ez-soft-collar/) that can be worn backward or forward for small dogs or cats that I thought looked like a good idea.  The were for sale at Petcetera here, not sure if they're easy to find where you are, or how effective they are.  The packaging showed an option where the collar could be worn with the cone backward, over the shoulders instead, which would work only with the right sort of leg to body ratio I guess.  I came home one day to find that my cat had puked in his standard Elizabethan collar when he had surgery, and thought this would have been a kinder solution if I ever need to put him in one again.

Those are nice, as are the balloon-like ones, but in this case unfortunately, along with being prevented from scratching her eye, she also needs not to be able to rub her eye on anything else, like the furniture etc.  So none of the other options is possible.  I swear she was actually managing to rub the side of her eye on the collar itself, but at least that's all she can do.

The vet put a stupid :)-face flower sticker on the damn thing too. I'm trying to decide whether to cover it up by sacrificing my last Achewood "What the hell, people" sticker.

Ugh.  Indignity upon indignity.  Tragic pug is tragic.

I wouldn't waste a quality, now possibly irreplaceable sticker on something that is hopefully quite temporary like this.  I might purchase a less fabulous sticker for the same purpose though.

You're probably right. I wouldn't need to buy one, though. Maybe a Wigu "I am made of poison" would make her feel tough? Or maybe I can just amuse myself by using this sticker from Hellbender Burritos.

I'm a jerk and I would probably just put masking tape over it then use a sharpie and write "Tragic" on it with an arrow pointing at the saddest of eyes.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it here, but my dog, Morty, has recently decided he likes to go into my work bag, but only when no one is around.  I used to always carry an apple in my bag, just to have something to munch on.  This never interested him, so for at least two years, I would always have an apple in my bag (unless I had taken it out and eaten it, but hadn't gotten around to replacing it), and never really think about it.  Then one day I came home and my bag was lying on it's side and the paper towel I wrapped the apple in and the stem were all that was left.  Morty had eaten my apple.  The entire thing.  So I stopped leaving apples in my bag, and I would instead leave them on my desk at work, but this caused the animals brain to decide bags =good things to eat in side.  First I would come and find the contents of my bag pulled out and scattered on the floor (nothing harmed though).  My husband left his lunch bag sitting out (again, never used to be an issue) and Morty got in there at ate some almonds and a pudding cup.  I put a banana in my bag once about ten minutes before leaving in the morning recently and ran upstairs to get something, came down, like 5 minutes later, and there was a torn up bannana peel on the rug and a dog trying to look non-chalant.  So I decided, okay, no food whatsoever in my work bag (it's like a portable file bag, way too heavy to hang up).  I came home last week and he had gotten out the inner zip lock bag I had in there that contained sexual health education pamplets and condoms.  Thankfully he has a clear understanding of food vs non-food stuffs, so the flavoured condoms had been tested, but not eaten.

Excellent.

That awkward moment when you try to make plans with someone because you have a surprize for them, only they cancel.  Then you reschedule, and they cancel, and again, and again, and by the time you finally make plans to meet up, you are so frustrated with them for drawing it out, that you want to yell at them instead of giving them a nice surpize.  I've been trying to see my BFF since I got back from Tokyo in October, but she's canceled over and over again due to reasonable circumstances such as severe illness, but it's fuckin' December you know?  Like she couldn't have made a little time over the last three months?  Anyway, we're supposed to see each other on Friday, but she's getting back to me with the time...  If she flakes again... ah who am I kidding, I love her and I will tolerate her bullshit and she knows it.  Damn.

No, no, if she flakes again, you should take what you bought her in Tokyo and send it to ME.

PS: I also just hung a poster that I put in the space the other picture was moved from, and it's only six inches above the furniture. Well, above the computer printer, anyway.

Well, one is a sexy lesbian friend of my sexy lesbian friend, so that is entirely possible (I looked at her pics and was all "yum!").  The other is a dude who looks like an old-time-y prospector, and is a writer friend of a writer friend I know who lives in the wilds of a rural mountain area.

I get those all the time and I accept them. I don't treat Facebook any differently from a public blog, I don't post anything I wouldn't want everyone to see. Which doesn't mean I don't sometimes exercise questionable judgement about that, but I'd do the same on a blog. Friends of friends are fine, people who have seen my pug photos in groups are fine. It's the Internet, I come here to meet people who share my interests. What creeps me out is the ones that are from REALLY total strangers and I can't figure out what the connection is.

See, I almost ignored someone once for that reason, but then I thought, "why not accept them, then unfriend later if they turn out to be useless" and that person turned out to be the assistant of the publisher who is publishing my play, trying to reach me to make me an offer.  So now I always have that worry that someone is trying to reach me to offer me money for work I've basically already done.  So I friended them both.

Right - except that is totally weird - a publisher couldn't think of any other way to reach you than Facebook?

Facebook is a totally valid way to reach someone, but you don't have to friend someone to send them a message.

Yeah, and my phone number and contact info are on the script's first page, which I emailed to them.  So they had my phone number and email, but this was their way.

But if they are not a friend you don't get a message notification, you have to actually check your inbox. I have missed several important things that way. It is not a good way to contact people.

You know what I like on Facebook, is "Facebook triangulation," when two of your friends turn out to know each other through an entirely different channel than you know either of them. Like, a guy I used to work with, and a guy I know from the old Utne Reader online community, turned out to have gone to high school together.

There's also the "facebook square," in which you check out someone from a friend's comment thread, and discover they know TWO of your friends, that person and one other, but apparently don't know you.

That I did not know.

However, I have been contacted by strangers before and don't remember not being notified, but I can't remember for certain how it was exactly.

You can send a message along with a friend request, that is the best way to do it, since you do get notified of friend requests.

I ended up in the same examination room as the person who smelled of pee had previously been in.  It was far more overwhelming in a small room with a closed door.

Also the doctor was in scrubs (he was running nearly two hours late as he had been across the way at the hospital delivering a baby) and there was blood on them.
