that someone should really go fix up the Achewood Wiki, the Achewiki, which could serve as a knowledge base for all things Achewood?

The color of the stickers the federal government mail man uses on your box is a sign to the DHS/FEMA of who is marked to be a prison planet guard and who is to become a prison planet prisoner.

How will the mark the planet?

Netflix also concludes from my viewing history that I like "Exciting TV shows."  As opposed to all those people who like boring TV shows, I guess.

Between all the West Wing and How It's Made, I'm surprised I'm not getting boring shows recommended.

Today I dropped my 19th pound since Jan. 5th.

Yay, congratulations! Your steady success is encouraging.

I feel very sorry for people who are upset by bad language and tattoos.

The only person I know under 70 who is sincerely down on coarse language does have tattoos.

I know several people who are down on tattoos.

There are many things I've never-for-a-minute considered because I "shouldn't." Now the "shouldn't" business is (slowly and laboriously) dropping away. I've got "not really interested in" on order. Hoping it ships soon.

I don't know. You said a lot of things last night.

Do people really feel bad if they use bad language and get tattoos in the modern world? I am asking seriously.

Seriously, some of them do.

Goddamiit, I sound like some new age fuck up there. Shoot me.

I KNOW! Every time I think in terms of 'personal journey' I can hear Ron Swanson yelling, "Son, people can SEE you."

I guess I have to revise my analysis of why I don't understand this conversation: If you come from a home for scared people you don't have the urge to do dangerous things so you don't need self-control about them.

What if you found out it was never all that dangerous?

Ash, AW, and Doc: these are interesting perspectives. Thanks. I will think on them.

This lack of understanding combined with denial makes it loom larger and larger in your life, way out of proportion with its actual importance.

That bias hadn't occurred to me. It makes total sense, and (hopefully) explains why this is only a big deal to me.

Doc's post is the only one here that makes any sense to me. I don't know even know what the rest of you are talking about. Is that because this is a bunch of guys talking somewhat obscurely about sex from a perspective I am unlikely to share, or are there other things to which this discussion of self-control and repression is relevant?

Drugs? Tattoos? Contact with unclean animals? Yelling at people in traffic? Foul language?

jay-ell and I saw "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." It was a very good try at an unfilmable book. That thing deserved a miniseries or something. Confusing as all get-out. And I read the book. I loved that book. I could NOT keep the suspects straight. Some books should just be books. Even when people like them.

I'm just saying that I've grown up and so has the technology and Netflix should know not to suggest things to me that I've already watched.

I'm guessing they didn't have any good suggestions for you, and the marketing decision was to show you things you have positive associations with instead of things you have a good chance of actually hating. If they had an online library comparable to their DVD library, they wouldn't have this problem. There would be a long tail of pretty good suggestions for their algorithms to give you.

In this case, the algorithm says, "Hell, dude, I don't know what this guy wants. Can I just tell him he's seen it all?"

And the marketing guy says, "No, he'll unsubscribe. Just show him happy pictures."

"But he'll think I suck at this!"

"Shut up. Algorithms can't talk."

I'm pretty sure that's how it went.

"AT&T's Natural Voice algorithms can talk."
"I said SHUT UP."

What is the difference between self-control and repression?

I grew up a Catholic southerner with a deep and abiding respect for authority. (That reads: few people around me held or understood my beliefs.)

Our pastor, Father Bill was a Franciscan Friar. He was a monk. A vow of chastity. A vow of poverty. Everything he used on a daily basis was technically the property of the church. I thought that guy was badass. I really admired his sacrifice and dedication and thought that such a lifestyle brought clarity and strength.

Now it seems much more likely that such a lifestyle could be horribly alienating, even damaging, and would certainly get in the way of the connecting and understanding work of the priesthood.

Because of my upbringing, I limited certain behaviors, and beat myself up pretty bad when I didn't successfully limit others. I'm starting to see how even this could be damaging, but having never explored these issues openly, I lack a frame of reference.

Surely there is still such a thing as healthy self-control. Apparently, there is such a thing as harmful repression. What are the criteria for determining where to draw the line? If "all things are permissible, but only some things are beneficial," how do you set your boundaries?

Does everybody either adopt a given frame of reference (like good little Mormons and Catholics) or just play with boundaries in youth until they get burned and retreat?

How badly do most people get hurt before they frame their version of a healthy lifestyle?

I know this is a lot of questions, and folks have probably been working this out all their lives. But I went from being a pretty mature kid to a really naive adult, and I've only just now noticed the change.

I really dislike those books. He raised metaphor to a level nobody needed. He would have done better writing a book in semaphore.

Or writing about pinafores. Something.

Wait.  What?

It's supposed to recall Aslan, the lion stand-in for Jesus in the Chronicles of Narnia.

That wasn't a complaint. I felt the same way about Anathem. A couple hundred pages in I was like "interesting things are happening but I can't quite figure out what they're getting at yet."

I loved Anathem. It's one of the few I reread. When I gave Diamond Age to jay-ell, I warned her that the book begins "when the little girl opens the primer." Everything before that is just setting the stage. Baroque Cycle scares me. I'm worried the setting won't be interesting enough for me to hang on until he gets to the parts I givacrap about.

And I could tell he was going to rip their arms and legs off and then throw them in the fire and I just didn't want the heartburn.

When I describe the book to friends, I say this:

If you're reading the books, and a character is having a good day, reread that passage a couple of times. Linger over it, and enjoy it. Things are going to get very bad for that person, and you'll want to have good times to look back on.

wait there's hoss in PIE now? i was on the fence but that settles it.

Just Moon Pies. They contain gelatin "from de-hooved hosss" (as NoFX puts it).

They are not made of Moon. They are not pies. What is it we THOUGHT we were getting into playing god like this?
