Here comes that useless time change again...
« on: March 12, 2010, 10:39:04 pm »

I hate this time change.  Hate it like I hate laziness, cancer, intentional disregard and all-round redundant acts.

I walk my dog at 6:45 am, and it's already light outside.  I get home from work, and walk the dog again at around 6pm, and it's still light outside.  Why do we need to mess with time in such a stupid way?  What exactly is the point beyond massive inconvienence?

Plus, it's actually bad for us.

Quote
"In general, in terms of normal sleep patterns, daylight in the morning is better than light later in the day. Remember, our circadian rhythms were set eons ago to a rhythm that didn't include daylight savings time, so the shift tends to throw people off a bit," said Dr. Nicholas Rummo, director of the Center for Sleep Medicine at Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco, N.Y.

"Daylight savings time is anti-physiologic, and it's a little deleterious, at least for several days," he said, adding that research has shown that the rate of auto accidents goes up slightly in the days following the change to daylight savings time

God damn, I hate this stupid time change, and I have science behind me on this.  Science!

We do all kinds of things that make our lives less convenient for the sake of saving energy. In the 1940s, the national speed limit was set at 55 to save scarce rubber for the war effort (not fuel as is commonly believed).

Hell, just the other day I spent twenty minutes hanging clothes on a clothesline instead of using my perfectly functional indoor clothes dryer.

I don't like messing with the time, but I understand why we as a nation have decided it's something we're willing to put up with, and I deal accordingly.

Paradoxically, I may be getting more sleep in the mornings next week, since the wee bairn is presumably daylight oriented.  He's going off around 5:45am these days.  Darker mornings (for a while) might get him rising later, clock-wise.

Its still going to suck.  I'm trying to get to bed earlier these few days beforehand.

I wish I could at least equate the damn change with saving energy, but for us it doesn't work that way.  Our house is on a heavily treed street, and the main living area only has windows off of a covered deck area, meaning no matter how much daylight is available in the evenings, we still need the same indoor lighting on regardless - day or night.  We've got a high energy efficient home though, so regardless, at least we're doing really well year round with all our HE appliances, furnace, etc.  BEFORE the time change, we didn't have to turn on lights on the second floor in the morning to get dressed and such because the second floor windows are at the tree line... now we have to.

Cute moment this morning:  went downstairs to walk the dog and he was all sleepy and confused.  He got up to greet me all squinty eyed and yawning because I'd turned the light on, then laid back down and snorted.  When I got my coat on and turned off our alarm system, he came over to me confused, and showed none of his usual excitement at getting a morning walk in.  He clearly had no idea what was going on until I had the leash on him and opened the door.

Shit moment this morning:  now that it's dark out again (plus super-sloppy out due to the spring melt), I apparently stepped in a big hunk of dog shit on my way to the car, which I didn't see thanks to the absence of Mr. Sun.  I didn't notice this when I got to the gym for my usual morning run, but later wondered why my locker smelled of poo when I went to the shower.  Because I wore my winter boots, I have this gross shit waffle on my boot tread now.  Fuck you time change.  Fuck you.

As expected, the boy was still asleep when I went to get him this morning, and didn't wake us with 4am shenanigans.  That may have been due to exhaustion from the raging diaper rash he's battling at the moment.  A couple times yesterday he propped himself on his forehead and wide-spread knees (face down) and just remained in that position for a few minutes to get some relief from the chafing (crying hard all the time).

Oh, Jaydub, what is that saddest thing?

I just love it when the days last until 9 pm.  This is really the best time of the year.  The cold weather is going away, it's nice and sunny, but not too hot yet.  Everything is growing like mad.  People are getting things done outside.

Love, love love the daylight saving time.

For the millionth year in a row, I somehow managed to fuck up resetting my clocks, and as a result I woke up right when my first class was starting. God dammit.

Just remember, Spring Forward, Fall Back.

When in doubt: Use whatever time your cablebox/cell phone agree on.

Last night we parked outside a favorite Shawarma place, and upon ordering, the owner said "you have to move your car - they'll tow it!" So my husband raced outside to move the car.  Upon leaving, we checked the parking signs (which we had checked when initially parking) and realized we had actually legally parked, but that the restaurant had not changed the time on their clock, and thought it was an hour earlier and therefore illegal to park in front of their place.  Fuck you time change!
