I'm sure you've been told this before, but: hard-g "gee-roe," Bozack. Or at least "gye-roe," which is a common enough mispronunciation that you'll at least get a gyro out of it.

The first time I ever heard "gyro" in the Delicious Sense said aloud was on Beavis and Butt-head, of all contexts, while they're watching a Ween video that seemed to take place in and around some sort of Greek restaurant. Butt-head pronounced it "yee-roe? yee-roe? yee-roe?" in this phony accent. I really thought that was about right. PERHAPS GREEKS HAVE BEEN LAUGHING AT ME

what was it of Pole Position that transfixed so?

The first game had only one track: the Fuji Speedway.

As far as what made Pole Position so aesthetically resonant, well, I suppose it was just the time and place(s). I remember when just about every hotel had some sort of "game room", usually just off of a maintenance hallway, near vending machines and, perhaps, changing rooms; I would spend hours hanging around these collections of four and five games, even without a single quarter to my name, watching the attract modes, listening to the sounds, absorbing the cabinet art. The four tones that precede a race in Pole Position - the only sounds the attract mode makes - will be burned into my head forever.

This is approximately how I was told it was pronounced, at the establishment where I formerly procured this comestible.  But they were equally happy to provide said dish in return for the pronunciation 'ji-row' and the appropriate amount of legal tender, and I have found this to be true at Greek places all over.

I don't want to get into another discussion of language history but... we borrow words and change their pronunciation every day, so 'ji-row' it is, I think.

correction of my advice re: pronunciation of "gyro"

Well, hell, it's all...

... no...

I won't say it. But you know I'm thinking it. So there.

Man, there were a few weeks in the 80's when Pole Position was IT.  It was all that we played.  We sucked, but we didn't play anything else for a while.

I don't think people are making too many games, anymore, that are fun and compelling even you are just Stone Terrible at them. Maybe it's because the older games had the Whiff of Novelty about them; interacting with these Sights and Sounds was itself compelling enough to eclipse any tragic lack of skill (and believe me, at that age, I wasn't good at anything). That would be Spy Hunter for me. Love that Peter Gunn music, though.

Yeah, I used to love me some Spy Hunter.  I played it in both arcade variations (stand up and sit-down enclosure) and had it for the Commodore 64, where you needed two joysticks to play it - one to control your car and fire the front gun and the other to fire missles, release smoke or oil slick, etc.

There is no game funner than Spy Hunter.  Vice City came close, if only because of the cool 80s soundtrack.  There's nothing like doing a drive-by shooting while listening to "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life."

That was one of the reasons that Rock N Roll Racing was such an awesome game.

The announcer all being, "Olaf unleashes hot fury!" while I lay down a spray of heat-seaking missles with Peter Gunn or Born To Be Wild blaring in the background.

Good times.

I swear, there is a conspiracy at Greek restaurants to make the rest of us  feel stupid.  If I order a "jye-ro," they say "yee-ro."  If I say "yee-ro," they say "jye-ro."  I should try it both ways at the same restaurant with the same counter guy, and see if he makes me out to be wrong both times.

Just point at the poster (there's always a gyro poster) and grunt.

My brother and I used to play this game as if he were the driver (since he was older and had a driver's license when I was seven) while I sat in the back seat and handled "demolitions."  We were like Spy Kids.  Except, you know, cool.
