And to correct a typo in that re-quote, as if to say:

Yes, I made a mistake.  I'm fallible too. Now let's all move on.

And Mantonio, Idioteque is the fuck*ng RAWK.  It's my favourite track from Kid A.  I listened to it over and over and over again.

The Ballad of John & Yoko - fuck*ng brilliant.

The Soft Parade - also just fuck*ng GREAT.

I am with you on the Particle Man, though.  That one always irked me too.  Especially considering that when it came time for the 120 Minutes compilation, what TMBG song is represented?  fuck*ng Particle Man.

I would probably agree that Particle Man is the worst single but not the worst song overall. The problem with TMBG is decided what counts. Spider? Fingertips? To the Bubblecraft?

Ahem. Now that I have bravely traveled BACK THROUGH TIME to put right what once went wrong and hit "Edit" on a post where I once hit "Quote", let's get back to the thread, shall we?

This is entirely a valid point. It's an open question what constitutes "good" and "bad" in their discography, and it seems to depend heavily on which album you started listening to. (See the thousands of wildly contradictory reviews of John Henry and every album after it, for example. I think at this point I've seen reviews for every album between Apollo 18 and The Spine, inclusive, proclaiming the album either The Crowning Artistic Masterwork of Their Careers or The Bitter Fruits of TMBG's Final Sell-Out.) It doesn't help that you still have things like "Fingertips" that might not even be songs.

Objectively, I think "Particle Man" is not great music but is fairly fun as novelty tracks go. As TMBG tracks go, I think it's a cute one-off and part of why Flood is an interesting album. As a summation of TMBG's career, I'd be hard-pressed to find a song that does it more poorly than "Particle Man." Sigh.

I would put John Henry as the cut off simply because it's the when they changed from just the Johns into a real band. But JH itself is too unlike all their previous work. Their later albums featuring the Band of Dans is more like the old stuff, only with a full band. Plus their early adoption of mp3 and paid downloads unleashed hundreds of tracks on the public. I have something like 400 TMBG songs and if I hadn't accidentally missed out on almost a year's worth of updates I'm sure I'd have more. But those are mostly demos, betas (I prefer the original lyrics to Cyclops Rock), and just crazy ass shit. But I can't possibly count all that.

Was Particle Man a single before the Tiny Toons video? Or did the awesomeness of that cartoon force the issue?

I have to agree with Jough; Both Ballad of John and Yoko and the Soft Parade are timeless classics. I've been laying off this thread because as ond of the resident old farts on this board, I'd be mentioning music most of you couldn't care less about. In the case of The Doors and the Beatles,
I have to say something.

Damn whippersnappers. Get off my lawn.

I'm not totally sure about this, actually. While I think there's definitely a lot about it that's not characteristic, I don't think it's the huge stylistic discontinuity that a lot of people consider it to be; it's a very eclectic album, which probably doesn't help, but I can hear the influence and exploration of themes from Apollo 18 all over JH.

Yeah, this is why I limited myself to choosing actual album-release tracks obviously intended as legitimate music when I made my 15 Worst list. I honestly enjoy most of TMBG's b-sides and rarities, but it doesn't seem fair to consider things like, well, Miscellaneous T's Untitled Track and the obviously-experimental half-a-songs I've scrounged on MP3.

Bob Dylan - Lay Lady Lay.  A terrible song, made worse by the tippy-tapping cowbell and Dylan's de-nicotined voice.  Yeesh.

Nirvana - Milk It. A miserable, mewling piece of shit.

I really like these two songs.  I think you are mistaken.

Well, you go right on thinking there, Miles.

Post your own list of the fifteen worst songs and I'll throw some rocks at your choices.

Nashville Skyline was the one record where Dylan quit smoking and I just can't staaaaand his voice when it isn't ravaged by nicotine.   And that cowbell just sucks.  Sorry.

Kurt Cobain admitted in interviews that he was kind of going through the motions, songwriting-wise, on In Utero.  And "Milk It" proves he's right, as do "Tourette's" and "Scentless Apprentice."  But the latter two don't bug me quite as much.

Cowbell never sucks. At any rate, Nashville Skyline has a special place in my heart thanks to a certain cowboy in my life, and I will always love that album.

Man that is neat looking.  As for my name, I was listening to the John Cale song of the same name as I registered, but I do very much appreciate both the Pixies song and the Dali/Bunuel film it references.

I can't believe the insanity I'm seeing here.

There is no such thing as a bad Pixies song.  Some are less rad than others, that is all.

Quoted for truth.

Off-topic (oxytocin at unbearable levels): Va, you are so dang adorable I can hardly stand it.  The avatar is cute, and the sig just MAKES IT. I think I speak for most everybody here when I say that we can't wait for baby pictures from you and JL. Awww! <3 <3 <3

Thanks!  Let's just hope jough doesn't decide it's too gross and make me change it, as threatened here:

Quote from: "jough"
I'm still deciding on whether to allow pregnant gut avatars.

I mean, I'm all for AS MUCH NUDITY AS THE LAW ALLOWS in avatar useage provided it is attractive nudity (i.e. what Jough likes) but I don't know - right now it's kinda cute but 100 days from now we're all going to be such as "Ew. Gross." So perhaps it is better to nip it in the bud ASAP.

I'll let the kids weigh in on the issue before I lay the perfunctory SMACK-DOWN on't.

I'm new 'round these parts, so I really don't know how seriously I should take jough, other than taking him DEADLY seriously because he's admin.

Uh, sorry for the additional big chunk of off-topicness.

EDIT: This exchange now makes no sense as I have changed both my avatar and sig.

Uh, sorry for the additional big chunk of off-topicness.

Jough's wrath is both powerful and fickle. So nobody is really ever sure. And we've basically accepted that here the only way to be on-topic is to stray off topic.

This is why you have to read every single thread even if the actual subject line sounds boring. Just ask wombat.
