music thread for variety
« on: November 16, 2004, 02:34:25 pm »

lareheartedboy has a link today to live magnetic fields.  i vaguely remember some of you youngin's going on about that there band.  i downloaded these live songs and i listened to them and i get the impression that he would very much like to meet Mr. Gira and talk about tea with honey and/or lemon and stuff.

there's also a link to a live Cat Power deal.  i will once agin posit that Matador records has a very good batting average, and that it's slugging percentage (which in my mind is the percentage of hits that are doubles or greater, so thusly the percentage of hits which are good hits as opposed to bad hits) is astronomical.  i didn't want to like Cat Power, because i think she may very well be a hipster capable of more self-aware irony than i ever will, and yet the voice, the voice, what am i to do?

damn you alternachixors! damn you to hell!  just as soon as i pull myself out of your grasp, you Pull. Me. Back. In.

Live Magnetic Fields would be a very exciting thing indeed, were they coming anywhere near me.  Theoretically I do not live all that far from New York, but  like Mr. Bowie, I'm afraid of Americans.
As for Cat Power, no, there really is no resistance to her hipstery charms.

Do not fear New York! We are awesome! And if you come, I will take you to delicious restaurants and ply you with the most watery of shitty American beers!

I don't know what you are talking about, but I like Magnetic Fields.  In fact, I am listening to The Charm of the Highway Strip right now, as I work on a paper. I love that album.  I think everyone should listen to it.  Go buy it.

to recap:

largeheartedboy has a link from the other day to some live magnetic fields.

i'd never heard of magnetic fields before seeing their name on this achewood messageboard.

i downloaded the live songs linked above.

i am left with the impression from these live songs, that the singer of magnetic fields would like to have tea with M. Gira of the Swans and discuss the pros and cons of lemon and honey.

Yeah, sorry.  It was just the whole largeheartedboy thing that I didn't understand.  Do you like the Swans or Angels of Light, or was that a dig at Mr. Merrit?

Dude, BC is really, really far away.
Not to mention, a really odd choice for what I believe was his only Canadian show this tour.  Ah, well, Montreal's got enough awesome of its own.

Edit: sorry, he.

Being from Seattle, I do realize this.  And it is odd.  Everyone goes to Tornoto and Montreal.  He skpis a lot of places though every tour.  And everyone skips Salt Lake.

i like the Swans but i haven't listened to my cd's in a long time due to danger.

mr. merrit is the MF singer?

if so, then i was saying he sounded like he wanted to sound like gira.

based on the 4 random live tracks linked to from a blog.

and my having listened to them 2x each.

Now that you mention it, I can see (that is to say, hear) the resemblance, but I doubt it's the causal one you're suggesting, as Stephin Merritt seems to take pleasure in citing his influences as ABBA, Phil Spector, etc.

I've only heard her as part of the New Pornographers. Does her stuff sound anything like that at all? I know A.C. Newman's solo stuff sounds almost identical to NP.

What CJ just said. Also, she is playing in PDX right in this general time frame. But Jesus, I can't see everybody.
