Yeah. It looks like a remote control.  But what it does sounds amazing. Essentially, it works like a 3D penis. It can decect tilting and any range of motion as well as distance from the TV. It's basically the powerglove reborn as a fully functional idea.

The controller is also modular to suit developer's needs:

When I first saw it, I thought Nintendo was off their fuck*ng rocker. But then I started thinking about it. There are so many awesome possibilities for this thing. For an FPS, you could use the analog attachment to move, and the remote control like the penis on a PC, only a ton more immersive. Since there is a trigger on the back, it would be like holding a gun.

Or let's say they make a new Zelda. You could use the controller like a sword, slashing and stabbing.

Or it would make the perfect giraffeing rod. Or tennis racket. Or baseball bat. The possibilities seem endless, and a lot of fun.

I just hope Nintendo is fully behind this thing. The pontential is huge, but if they squander it, this thing will be gone faster than you can say "Virtual Boy"

I think it excites me because the other consoles are both so boring. Graphics are at a point to me where I don't care how much better they get, and that's all the 360 and the PS3 have to offer. I knew I wanted something different, but I didn't know what. I think the Revolution is just what I was looking for.

At any rate, you have to agree that Nintendo has the biggest pair you've ever seen to do something like this. Here's hoping it catches on.

Or you could lube it and shove it up -- never mind.

It's basically going to depend on how well Nintendo supports and integrates these features in their games. People boggled at the Nintendo DS, but Nintendo brought the goods on it.

The problem as I see it, though, is that in the present environment the majority of developers on console systems develop with an eye towards ease of cross-platform porting. The Gamecube controller received heavy criticism, but the problem wasn't that it was a bad controller (I prefer the Gamecube's control for GC-native games to the PS2's control for PS2-native games), the problem was that it was set up to deliberately emphasize particular buttons as primary and others as auxiliary, and games that were designed with the PS2's "four equal buttons" controller in mind were often ported to it without alteration.

With the DS Nintendo had a leg up on the situation, because the portable systems on the market are sufficiently different for easy straight porting from one to the other to be rather unlikely anyway. As a result third-party developers were more willing to incorporate the DS's abilities into gameplay at a core level. However, it's also worked out because Nintendo has kept producing a stream of in-house games which not only utilize the DS's mechanics at their core, but make it extremely fun and make people want more games that use those mechanics. Unless Nintendo can do that with the Revolution, the funky controller is going nowhere.

The cross-platform adaptability is an issue, yes. The obvious solution seems to be for the Revolution to do with cross-platform ports what it already plans to do with older Nintendo games -- get a docking port that essentially makes the controller into a traditional game controller. That said, you're very right that they're going to need a strong roster of in-house games optimized to the controller to make it not just a liability. I think Nintendo is about the only current developer I'd trust to be able to manage that, though, so we'll have to see. If they can manage a few killer apps for the new controller the way they managed to do for the DS, I think it'll find a place.

(EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Cautiously optimistic!)

The Revolution has 4 Gamecube controller ports on the side somewhere, so I figure you could just use the Gamecube controller if some company wanted to do a lazy port or something.

I'm not convinced yet. It doesn't seem like it would be good for well, your basic games. I have thought about some wonderful uses for it throughout the day (screw work), but I wouldn't want to sit down and play most of the games I play on it.
For me, the Dual Shock was perfect, but Sony have gone and ruined that for the PS3 so...
