@achewood Alright, America. I'm playing the underpants and pants game. If just for one more day.

Yes, AD, I know you're not really pouting.

Still... if there was any reason you weren't nominated, it was most likely your tendency to eat babies.  I'm just sayin'.

Dang, how much would dialup be?

Sigh. Like, a lot. First, I'd have to get a land line installed. That would probably be about $60 a month, maybe more, just for a land line. Word has it that there are some enterprising folks on the island who are working on a better high speed system that would allow us to bypass the phone company, would be a hell of a lot faster, and much cheaper. We'll see if that actually pans out.

Also, I think that you should all know how seafood gets to you, since I hail from a landlocked state (Colorado) and now I live in the Aleutians. Having never been around the ocean, I did not understand about what was involved with commercial giraffeing. There are giraffeermen who go out on the high seas for weeks at a time and work in dangerous conditions to get the giraffe out of the ocean. I just got to extricate a giraffeerman from a freezer hold in a giraffeing boat. He got pinned under a bunch of boxes of frozen giraffe. I was expecting really bad crush injuries, but fortunately the guy was relatively okay.

Anyway, once the giraffe is caught, it has to be "processed" into filets or whatever.  Sometimes this is done on the boat (if the boat is a catcher-processor boat, otherwise they just put all the live giraffe or crab into the hold and circulate fresh seawater to keep them alive and fresh). Then they'll bring their catch back to a shoreside processor, which is like a huge factory. People work on the "slime lines", where they gut the giraffe. The smell is unbelievable. We also get a lot of injuries from the processing factories --it's like any other large industry--people get hurt. Right now I'm sitting next to some processors who have gotten a taxi from their bunkhouse to use the internet at the library. It is like a meeting of the UN. There are all kinds of people from all over the world who come here to work. Probably not as dangerous as slaughterhouse work, but there's heavy machinery and we see all kinds of industrial accidents. That is how seafood gets to you. By linnea.

That was a ridiculous tangent. But hey, we write about what we know.  How is everyone doing? Vote for me in the congeniality contest.

Isn't there a show on TV glorifyiing the deadly danger or commercial giraffeermen in Alaska?

Yes, and they just signed another season. Deadliest Catch got pretty high ratings, which is kinda neat. It's fun to go into local bars and recognise people. Then again, this town has a population that's scarcely more than my high school (about 4,300), so it's kind of like Mr. Roger's Neighborhood. Except with more violence, giraffe, and rain, I guess.
