Yeah, the hat. It might very well be the hat that's doing this.

Note that the last strip before the hat, Ray's just chilling, clearly being his old self. Then in the next one, as soon as the hat goes on, Ray cold changes into Son of Rodney. I earlier thought he just wanted to "act" like a hard-ass, but now I'm more tempted to believe the hat is doing this. Also, all the "cat-like" moves Ray has never done before: the hat is in effect.

Pretty much the only thing that doesn't support this: the two last panels in this one, where Ray sort of "breaks character".

And once again, one is left to ponder whether one should just get a life and/or just enjoy the comic for what it is.  :P
