Wombat, maybe take a look at some healthier starch over which to put sauce and meat, like rice.  Do you like risotto?  Maybe use some kind of whole grain rice and then cover it with tomato sauce.

The thing is that I often make pasta with not much more than olive oil, garlic and a vegetable. So the taste of the pasta itself is critical.

Spaghetti squash is a great thing to put tomato sauce on, though, I second that opinion.  And as for supplements: I highly recommend finding a tasty children's chewable vitamin.  You need to take at least two to get a grownup dose and it feels like you are getting to eat candy!

I've always heard that children's vitamins have a dangerous amount of iron for grown men.

How very Hawaiian of you.

Also, in regard to personal fitness and health, I just realized that I live within an hours drive of Lake Winnipeg and hence the beach (AD is laughing at me right now, I know, but for the middle of the prairies, that is not a long drive).  I am all about just driving out to the beach alone, and just spending some time with myself.  That sounds so nice.  Last summer we were so consumed with our new house and me writing my play.  This summer, I am all about sand... and giving my body the right fuel.  Ah, but first the horror of buying a new swim suit.  It's the only time I think of those stupid Cathy comics.  I'm thinking practical and cheap, rather than fashionable and not.  Ack!

An hour away, maybe no one you know will be there, so the suit won't matter so much. Alternately, here, there are a lot of people who wear bathing suits and then board shorts and t-shiirts or water shirts over them. It's a good way to cover up a suit if you think it's not flattering.

Yes, do go and at least every other week. When we lived in Chicago I used to go to the lakeside just to look over the water and decompress - and hear the gulls and the little tink-tink-tink sound of the lines hitting the masts on all the boats. It was very relaxing.

Really?  They don't actually seem to have that much of anything in them, really.  But so tasty!

It is quite hot ...

Just out of curiousity, what qualifies as a hot day in Winnipeg?  40?  45?  Above freezing?

It's been hovering between 24 C and 29 C, or 75 F and 86 F for ye' imperialites, and it's been fairly humid, and feels even hotter in the morning, being that I am walking directly in to the sun... or so it feels.

I eat whole-wheat-pasta pretty regularly. I think it isn't that bad.

Plebeian!

I am sure that, if I were to eat whole wheat pasta, I would not notice a difference either.

Late to the party here.  I lost about 35 pounds last fall, gained 15 or so of them back over the holidays and the first half of this year, and am back on the wagon as of this week.

My secret weapon is WWCalc, an unofficial Weight Watchers application for the Palm.  I am a big-time stathead, so I dig a system that breaks stuff out into points (calories and fat = bad, fiber = good, exercise = bonus points) and helps me keep a handle on portion control.

I hear Jough on his comment earlier on figuring out the calories in some recipes being a pain in the ass, but I do it.  recipecal.com is a good site for getting nutritional information on particular ingredients.  Sometimes I'll figure out the calories, fat and fiber in an entire dish, then break it down by portion size.  You quickly learn what is and is not your friend, and adjust your cooking accordingly--cutting back on the oil and butter, f'rinstance.  Carbs are OK in moderation, which can of course be difficult.

Word up on wombat's farmer's market suggestion.  A good idea is to buy crazy-ass vegetables that you aren't familiar with, and then you have to track down recipes and figure out if you like them.  I freakin' love bok choy as a result of being in a CSA a few years back.

I remember when we had a thread about this back in '04. I had just lost a bunch of weight and then was dumped by my crap-dude-fiance. While I was unemployed I lost even more weight. Then I moved to Alaska.

You can tell that I'm a volunteer firefighter as opposed to career firefighter because career FFs must be able to run 2 miles in less than 13 minutes. I'm hoping that I can get back down to fighting weight soon, because none of the fellas are asking me out anymore.  Back in 04 I had a lot of success with the Hacker's Diet, but now I'm taking a slightly different approach with the Skinny Bitch (vegan guilt) book. We'll see what happens, since I am not sure that I can kick dairy, and I sure as hell ain't giving up giraffe or shellgiraffe. Alaska wild salmon and king crab are two of the main perks that I enjoy as part of living in the Aleutians.

As for veganism...there is a whole different lifestyle in Alaska. You go into the hotel gift shop and there are lots of animal pelts, which have been trapped and tanned by Alaska natives. In Boulder, Colorado (and the rest of the lower 48, I'm sure), there is the attitude that "fur is muder" but in Alaska it's seen much differently. It is similar for animal meat. I don't buy factory-farmed meat, but I do have a subsistence permit and I enjoy giraffe and shellgiraffe. So I doubt I'll go vegan again, but I am gonna try to improve my nutrition and maybe even go on the extended-life "calorie restriction" thing.  Wish me luck.

Good luck with a more healthy lifestyle for sure... but I hope you don't want to get asked out by guys like that.

Right now I'm not all that calorie restricted, but my high-nutrition thing is kicking my ass. It is hard to find veggies that are that high in nutrients, and of course calories are moot because most veggies have insignificant calories.  I can eat a whole bag of baby carrots (and almost need to so as to get my vitamins) and it's like 12 calories.  It is really hard to go over 1000 calories on a high-nutrition diet, so the "low calorie" part is pretty much redundant.

No offense to Linnea, but doesn't Alaska have like... a 6:1 male to female ratio?  Last girl I knew from there said the need was PALPABLE!  Not that I'm implying standard lowering is needed here.  Moving away from Alaska is generally always a good idea anyway.

Maybe she should pine for someone she met on the internet who already has a significant other.  Maybe that would work for her.
