My dad, who is an engineer by schooling (software engineer by profession) figured out how to add a counterweight onto the end of my scale to add 100lbs to its balance, thus increasing the amount of weight it can measure up to 450lbs.

I'm almost down below 350lbs now (the upper end of the scale) so in a month or two I'll not need it anyway, but it's really amazingly accurate.  It's a pretty decent doctor's scale that my dad bought years ago at a medical supply place. It's much nicer and sturdier than the scale that my actual doctor has in her office.

Anyway, I've been reading The Hacker's Diet and I think his suggestions for how to measure water balance and BMI are very good.  I may even weigh myself once in the morning and then once again before I go to bed just to collect the data (although again, for my goal-setting I am only counting Tuesday morning's weigh-in as my +/- weight for each week).

My new Get.FitWith.Us software will let people add weight check-in points any time they want, and will graph ups and downs, coming up with an average gain/loss number that will be a fairly accurate measure of actual weight, and then suggest caloric intake and possible exercise routines to maintain consistent and reasonable weight loss.

This stuff isn't rocket science, but it is science, and applying logic and math to my fitness rather than the emotional component I used to assign it (not that I can get away from my emotions, of course, but the science helps me not feel too badly about my body) I'm noticing real, calculable results, which in turn generate good feelings of self-worth and positive feelings that I can get my body into shape.

Coming up: weight training, and all of the fun maths involved in trying to calculate both muscle mass gain and weight loss of fat and such.  I have no idea yet how to account for muscle building when dealing with weight loss, but by this time next month I'll be an expert.

More to come.

Subjectively you account for it by noticing that you aren't losing weight as quickly, but that your muscles are toned, firm and larger and that you feel better.  Objectively I've no idea how you track this.  Body fat percentage, I suppose.

Personally I've spent this week trying to kick it up a little notch.  Doing a little overeating, so I've been trying to address that.  My big goal is to move the big slider on the scale at the gym.  I'm only 8 lbs away.

Yeah, it's really exciting to be near a milestone and to know that you WILL make it if given a little time.

I really don't know how to account for the increase in muscle and decrease in much lighter fat when calculating calorie-intake.  I mean, usually if weight loss starts to taper-off a bit software may recommend reducing calorie consumption, whereas what you should be doing is increasing calorie consumption, especially of proteins and heavy minerals like iron and other muscle-building materials to fuel your fat-burning engine.

However, as I said, I am not sure how Science does this yet.  Surely such a thing is calculable, although it may be difficult for people to measure in their homes.

I may have to just calculate average muscle increase based on activity that people can enter, and just leave it flexible and inaccurate.

It will be a minor piece of the application anyway, so it's not worth getting one's knickers in a twist over.

Objectively, you could use any of three methods to measure decreases in body fat percentage. Calipers, water immersion and electric current like Smells was talking about.

I've been lazy and busy and so I have been very bad about updating FitDay. New baby, two others for which I was 100% responsible for the hospital days (we ate out a LOT) and a wife recovering from what amounts to Abdominal surgery...but, on the bright side, I have gotten comments from people for the past week that I look thinner. So something must be happening!

I have been logging my physical activity on another site maintained by my health insurance provider which is also interesting.

my BMI no longer classifies me as "severely underweight!" I am only about 10 lbs away from being supposedly in the Normal range.

next step: actually gaining muscle mass. Hmm.

Apparently my BMI says I'm still underweight. I'm also about 10 lbs off being normal. That and all the weight, including probably a little replacement, has been muscle mass. Which is nice. Apart from my knees being all swollen and having smashed a kneecap off a drum lug, I haven't had my agonising leg pain for ages now, except one night when I hadn't really done anything that day. Nice to know it can still come back...

Oh man.  I was so good all last week, then yesterday I went to the Olive Garden.  I am up by two pounds.  Two pounds!  I was so good... Then I was very bad.  Oh well.  Back to it.

One day does not a diet break.  Check tomorrow, see that your weight is back in line.  I promise.

You'll be back to normal surprisingly fast, Mel. Drink some water and take a walk.

The doctors still don't know what's wrong with me. They think I may have some sort of crazy infection that just won't die. So it's another month of antibiotics, and giving up: sex, caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, and refined sugar. I'm thinking of becoming a pothead again just so I can have at least one pleasure of the flesh available to me. It's been a few days of clean living so far, and it ain't all it's cracked up to be, let me tell you. And I still need naps after even the mildest of exercise. But hopefully things will be looking up soon.

I don't think I can name a single item I've consumed in the past 2 weeks that didin't involve at least one of these things. Are you just eating boiled cabbage and taking cold showers all day?

Christ, right. My next MixDisc will have my own interpretation of Q theme music. This is too good an idea to pass up.
