He mentions that it sounded like "tacito".  So I would say a Taquito, or something of that nature.  Small, rolled up tortillas, with stuff in them.  I am not sure if this is a brand name or an actual authentic dish.

Maybe by "tacito", he meant Tacit-O's: the new type of cereal from General Mills! It's cereal that doesn't need to state its deliciousness. It's implied.

It's a taquito! What is the difference between a taquito and a flauta? I think they just wanted to make up a word that the gringos could figure out. I think flautas have been around for awhile.

Also, is a chimichanga the same as a burrito, but deep fried? inquiring minds want to know.

In most restaurants, yes. Although just recently my coworker, who lived in Mexico until she was 17, needed me to explain to her what a chimichanga was. So I'm guessing it's either an American invention or some sort of regional thing.

It indeed was.  By legend, somewhere in Texas*, a cook dropped a burrito in the fryer when he was trying to plate it and serve it.  He had to remake the burrito, but since cooks eat their mistakes, he gave the fried one a try.  It was also good!  He named it after what he exclaimed when he dropped it.  I guess we are lucky it is not named the Mother Fuck Now I Have To Make Another Burrito.

Also onion rings were invented in a similar manner.  Now we just deep-fry everything and sell it at outdoor festivals.  PROGRESS!

*This is probably remembered incorrectly from a long-ago Food Network show, but I'm not looking it up.  It's probably not entirely true anyway.

Hey, if Marc Summers says it, it must be true.

After all, he's obsessive about these things (compulsive too...)

yeah, this lady dropped a burrito into a deep fryer. she was about to say the spanish equivalent of "OH FUCK" (and I totally forget this word now, hm) but then realized that there were children in the kitchen. so she did that mid-word switch thing, to the nonsensical word "chimichanga!"

also: taco + diminuitive = taquito.

diminuitive endings are my favorite thing, ever. I talk to all small animals (and my baby cousin!) in spanish so that I can use the diminuitive.

Russian diminutives are the best because there are so many.

Correcting someone's misinformation is not being a dick, Hobot.

It is possible that your Russian professor was wrong.  Perhaps THE INTERNET can help settle this one...

THE INTERNET: Is there anything it CAN'T do?

(Answer: Yes, the Internet will not hug you when you are lonely.  The Internet will not hold your hair back when you are vomitting sickness.  However, the Internet will touch you, inappropriately, while you sleep.)
