At my elementary school we were all about pushing a hoop with a stick.

Yo-yo balls were the rage when I was in 1st grade, Yo-yos themselves requiring too much talent for either me or my peers. Also Yo-yo balls make better weapons.

When we had cans, we would kick them.

It was purely a reference. Just to make you feel better about... Humanity?
It just absolutely highlights the way every school seems to pick up on yo-yos every couple of years, and overnight.

My school seriously considered banning slap bracelets because the local TV news claimed they would kill all the children, their pets, and baby Jesus. There was also (according to my mom who was a teacher) talk of pog banning because it was like gambling, but then somebody pointed out that its exactly the same as marbles, and no school in its right mind would try to ban marbles.

...people still play marbles? As a chid, I always wanted to play marbles... but I could never find anyone who would explain what the game actually entails. Or, anyone to play with me.

but I distinctly remember carrying around a bag of marbles and trying to find a suitable dirt-patch.

Nobody actually played, but it's an old game that our peoples' grandparents played. Therefore it was familiar and allowed. And if you think about marbles and pogs are basically identical other than the actual objects gained and lost.

I used to play marbles with my brother, never at school though that I can recall.

Our school used to just ban stuff on the basis that kids started fights and kept stealing each others pogs/tazos/oddbods/pokemon cards/stds
