When I watch films, I look at the following in careful details: production design, editing, writing. IMO these three things can make or break a film and when they are all stellar, it can rearrange my molecular structure. I don't even remember the last time I saw a film that succeeded in this trifecta. But if done well, PD, writing, and editing can make a so-so film very good, and if done poorly, can *kill* an otherwise great idea.

See, this is one of my Problems with wanting to get into film.

As long as the writing acting and score are solid, you can shoot the film through a glass of milk, for all I care. I pretty much want plays that you can distribute in film cans and project on demand.

Well the writing and the acting have to be good, and in concert with one another. I've seen excellently-written films that were poorly-acted, and it was just a tragedy. But IMO the production design is crucial and the editing has to be on par or it's worthless. You can't shoot through a glass of milk. If you have superb writing and superb acting, it can make the film at worst passable, but without good production design and editing, you have little more than a glorified radio show, which, great; have a radio show. But then why make it into a film?

The reason you don't make it into a radio show is the same reason you don't make it into a play... because there's a slightly better chance of someone actually giving you the money to actually make it if and of people actually seeing it, if it's a movie.

I have a lot of complexes about what my guideposts are as the writer I wanna be, as the person I wanna be... and I guess I put the weight of those expectations onto other peoples' work.

I always have a problem with films that are obviously Of Quality in some regards that I still don't find myself liking. For the most recent example: The Fountain was a movie with lovely cinematography and some stunning special effects. It was a beautiful visual experience, and yet as a film it wavered between being stupid and being actively offensive to me. I didn't like it, and to be honest I'm kind of angry at it, because where does it get off being that pretty and still that stupid?

A thought that crossed my mind many many many times a day when I was in college.

But... not about... movies.

lol. Well done, lfm.

The answer to your question, V, lies in writing. A poorly-written film is *nothing*, and no amount of special effects or good acting or even stellar production design can save it. Conversely, a low-budget, limited-distribution film that is well-written can *soar*, provided the acting is decent enough to pull it off. But even so-so acting is better with good writing, than excellent acting and poor writing, IMO.

Writing is the backbone of film; really of the performing arts that employ spoken word as their primary expressive medium.

Damn, I really enjoyed the prestige and while I saw the twist coming it didn't spoil the movie for me, if anything it made it more tense and enjoyable because it just made these two guys even more fucked up than they were before. I've watched it again since and still enjoy. Compared to a movie with a fairly similar premise, the illusionist, I saw the ending coming miles away but it totally spoilt the movie because there wasn't much there except the twist. Paul Gigmatti and Ed Norton were great of course but the story just pissed me off.
But then I have an ability to enjoy just about every movie, even when I know it is horribly bad and pedestrian. I know when a movie I've seen is something special and is doing something new and wonderful but I was dragged along to 'wild hogs' the other night and I still got a few chuckles there too, so I guess I'm not the best person to go to for a decent critique.

Anyone here got an opinion on smokin' aces? I am very conflicted about that movie.

When I watch films, I look at the following in careful details: production design, editing, writing.

Yea, that's my problem now, if you add direction to the list. I have always been incredibly critical of films. Even films I like I can't help but consider. I may not even try to, but all the critical cocmments, both good and bad just appear in my head, and I tend to end up talking to people about it.
It's not helped by the fact a lot of it is spent talking to this friend who is a director, and who I write screenplays and music for, so we really did manage to make a critical analysis of the first forty minutes of it no problem, and hence my noticing of direction more and more. We also decided that Switchblade Romance was really  quite good, had some nice direction and such, but managed to, in editing, put an essential scene about five minutes before it should have happened. Totally killed the pacing and emotion of the ending!
I'm glad people seem to have fairly similar ideas of The Prestige's quality though, as everyone else has bene far more favourable (and apparently not really thought about it much).

I'm somewhat not surprised by your comments of The Fountain,  V. I want to see it for the effects (as they're all practical - I read an interesting article about how they were done not long ago), but am not expecting to really like it. I saw the trailer for it when I was in Canada last year and it looked a bit... Lost and confused and like it was trying to be way too self important.
I figure it will be like Sin City, stunningly directed and designed, but otherwise terrible (though perhaps with BETTER ACTING... ungh)! And two more of them to come yet. I basically expect 300, despite all the technical achievments, to be another Sin City, although I have at least some hope that Snyder will turn out to be a more competent director at least, and that thusly the Watchmen might turn out being good. We shall see!

As for The Illusionist, from what I could tell, it was indeed the poor man's Prestige (despite what I think of that so far - though I will watch it a proper), but it looked like Ed Norton was totally underplaying it, when it was clearly his chance to chew the scenery for the hell of it! That and I think I hate Paul Giamatti after having seen Shit in the Water (that film in which he played a condo super, who waded out into the pool in the middle of the night to see something spooky, and pulled a small turd out of the pool and went back inside...). I guess it wasn't entirely his fault that that film actually had me laughing out loud at the ending. The emotional music built up, more Narfs and Snuggrunts or whatever the fuck they were all called had things happen, and three of us just burst into uncontrollable laughter, which at least made the movie more worthwhile than it otherwise would have been.
Shayamalan is such a fuck*ng hack, and yet I could see he was trying. Half the shots in it were really quite nicely thought out, the other half were obviously thought out but didn't work at all. And the writing was just off the charts bad!
Anyway, I go on...

That was one of the things that bugged me, for the main character I don't think he did much to give us a feel of the character. A reviewer I read put forward the idea that he might be trying to play the restrained german character but I'm not so sure. I did like Paul gigawhatsit until the train station scene when I think he broke character with that stupid-ass laughing fit over the 'reveal the trick' montage. That was dumb.

Speaking of wombat's ignorance of movies, from what would come the line "you can be my wing man any day"?

"Gigli" has some MIND-NUMBINGLY bad shit in it, there is no question. Some shit where you just wanna rub your eyes, look at a bottle of alcohol, shake your head, throw it in the trash and walk away. There is no doubt about that.

But, also, there are long stretches of "Gigli" where it is just... normal bad. Run-of-the-mill bad movie bad. Or there are parts that are really awful but, like, you could see where if it had been handled some way or another, it could've been potentially less bad. Regrettable but not heroically so.

But "The Guardian" is the fuck*ng Mike Tyson of bad movies.

It just keeps fuck*ng punching. It is a rogue railway of suck. You do not get time to rest, you do not get time to reflect, you do not get breaks, you do not get mercy, the punches do not slow down long enough for you to breathe.

It sucks from the first second of horrific fuck*ng melodramatic voice-over all the way through the seventeen-million false endings and right to the second when you have either turned off the DVD or bitten down on the poison tooth that they totally gave you to kill Baron Harkonen that one time.

To watch "The Guardian" is to be Sisyphus.

The endless series of mountains is the movie.

Your forever-rolling burden is two-tons of suck as dense as the heart of the sun.

Holy fuck, seriously. You're watching "The Guardian" and... when you get to the point where you realize they keep TALKING about something called "D.O.R." but have never said what that is... oh, man. You will be BEGGING to see J-Lo making turkey sounds about her pu$$y.

J-Lo making turkey sounds about her pu$$y will be like Christ's tears in the middle of the Sahara fuck*ng Desert compared to Ashton Kutcher looking conflicted and Kevin Costner swimming in slow motion.

I have warned you.

I read this post, wished I had written it, read it again, etc.

You are a master of metaphor. You are a metaphorbater.
