re: movies. Have you guys seen 300?

I found 300 fairly enjoyable, but I felt that the writing didn't live up to how seriously the movie took itself.  The movie was earnest, man.  The actors were completely in the moment and didn't ever seem embarrassed by yelling loudly at people two feet in front of them.

Technically it was wonderful.  Amazing fight choreography, seamless effects shots (helped by the fact that every shot was basically an effects shot), decent sound, really good makeup and sets that looked otherworldly but completely fit each other.  I did find some of the eviscerations to be more anatomically correct than strictly necessary.

If you know the book it is based on, the movie is essentially a shot-for-shot remake.  This leads to a couple of problems, but nothing major -- just mostly you wonder why the Spartans spend so much of their day posing.  Though I was familiar with it I hadn't read it, so mostly I just spent the movie mentally dividing it into 'levels' and 'boss fights,' which really really fits.

I suppose I should mention that I'm entirely incapable of turning off my meta-thought process during a movie, which both makes them much more entertaining and ruins my ability to enjoy them as they are.  It's why I go to so few of them, because I can't watch Batman without wondering how much damage he's caused to the building trim of Gotham City over the years.

I guess what I'm saying is that it wasn't a bad movie.  The plot is decent, the writing is decent (if hackneyed), and it looks stunning.  You just can't let your mind wander to thoughts like "Xerxes' crew would totally dig on BMEzine."  'cause then you can't stop giggling and imagining their MySpace pages.

Hey, you know what was a really good movie?  Running With Scissors.  I was really moved by it - fantastic.

Also, I found Zodiac a pretty satisfying movie watching experience.

Oh, I'm pretty sure I've seen more than that.
That's pretty much the weakest joke I've ever made.

Speaking of movies, we just watched The Manchurian Candidate (the original version.) You could tell that it must have been awfully cutting edge in 1962, but it wasn't bad.  Still, another 2 hour movie that would have been better at 90 minutes.

Anyway, has anyone seen the remake?

Wombat, have you seen The Cooler? Or the original Italian Job. Rififi is good too, if you don't mind like 30 minutes of total silence during your movies. I may have recommended these earlier but I don't feel like, well, me-ing for it.

The Cooler is a good time - Macy is the Mackinest. Never does a bad piece of work, in my experience.

Of the subj. a bit, have we talked about Glengarry Glen Ross? That's a rol.licking happy-go-luucky time.

"We're adding a little something to this month's sales contest. As you all know, first prize is a Cadillac Eldorado. Anybody want to see second prize?"

I watched The Departed tonight.

Hell of a movie.  Probably could have used a little cutting, but who the hell am I to second guess Scorsese?

The last 20 minutes or so are hell of intense.  Also, Mark Wahlberg can act.

About once every 5 years or so, I end up saying "Wow.  Just Wow" at the end of a movie.  That's what I was doing an hour ago.

He wasn't very convincing as a rapper.

It was the first full-priced DVD bought in probably over a year.  Oh, except for House season 2.

Weird coincidence: the first full-priced DVD I purchased in over a year was House Party 2.

I'm not sure I ended saying wow quite as much, but was happy it didn't end five minutes sooner, or  I was going to be seriously annoyed with it (having for ocne, not seen the original before the remake - I was doing my watching the oscar noms). But I was very impressed, and wondered quite why everyone thought this didn't deserve best oscar but that something else he'd made would moreso. I think out of his catalogue of movies, this would be about the top for me, though I do really like Bringing Out the Dead.
I also reckoned that DiCaprio probably deserved a best actor nomination for this rather than Blood Diamond (though I haven't gotten round to it yet).
And begrudgingly, I'll admit Wahlberg was good in it, though I still think he's a jumped up shitbag, and that his brother's probably better (he was great in Band of Brothers).

Last night I watched Pulp Fiction. Oddly enough, I had never seen it before  - at least not in its entirety. But I had seen a lot of little bits and pieces of it over the years. So much, in fact, that I had a pretty good grasp of what was about to happen at every turn, even though I'd never watched the full thing. It was kind of a bizarre, deja vu feeling.

It probably also helps that there have been so many Pulp Fiction references made in television, like the episode of the Simpsons where Bart and Milhouse(?) roll into the gun shop and the clerk sticks a shotgun at them.
