@achewood I am composing a tone poem about eagles, lawnmowers, and Ted Nugent. It is composed only of the sounds of those things.

Goalkeeper Appreciation Thread (Football)
« on: October 10, 2006, 09:00:43 pm »

Favourite goalkeepers, past and present?

Mine:
Craig Gordon (Hearts/Scotland)
Peter Schmeichel
Mark Schwarzer (Middlesborough/Australia)
Edwin Van Der Sar
Jens Lehmann
Gigi Buffon
Thomas Ravelli
Jose Luis Chilavert
Rene Higuita merits a mention just for THAT save.
Santiago Canizares
Jerzy Dudek

I also found this awesome site: http://www.goalkeepersaredifferent.com/homeground.htm

Also the place for Youtube vids of goalkeeping exploits etc.  ;D

What? No love for Lev?

Nor Jose? For shame! (A video with a crazy commentator, beware.)

But some good choices, anyhow. Craig Gordon is my fuck*ng hero after Saturday. I'm guessing by that Premiership-centric list you are British or Australian?

Yeah, that was awesome.  What I want to know is, where does Chilavert so desperately want to run to after the goal?  And why are his teammates so intent on holding him back?  Perhaps he wants to go taunt the opposing 'keeper, but they don't want him to get red-carded.

Are you also Scottish?  :D

How the hell did I forget Chilavert?  :-[

Oh, Buffon in there too- he's kept out some phenomenal keepers in the national side.

Mark Bosnich when he played for Villa- shit hit the fan when he went to Man U.

Zubi is a good shout, Thomas Ravelli too.

A compilation of moments (you may want to turn down the sound bar)

The other thing about Craig Gordon is that's he's absurdly young and already the best Scottish keeper and best keeper currently playing in Scotland. Buffon is the only other one mentioned thus far who was a international regular in his early 20s.

Quote
He is also believed to have blocked around 150 penalty kicks during his career; far more than any other goalkeeper in history. When asked for his secret, he would say the trick was "to have a smoke to calm your nerves, then toss back a strong drink to tone your muscles."

To be fair, it isn't hard being the best anything for Scotland.

Though, they were impressive against France! Let's hope they can give an English pansy like me someone to cheer.

In that crazy Europe place, do they show this "futboll" on network (free) TV, or is it mostly on cable?

That sport doesn't seem to have good room for commercials, so I am puzzled about this topic.

Patrick Ewing is my favorite goalkeeper.

Sometimes.
We get all the England home games, but not the away games, which Sky own the rights to. We also get about, what, a third of premiership games, maybe? Have to remember we have one sport showing channel who doesn't ever show adverts anyway. Though they also only have so much money to spend on sports...
