We are not a wasteful people and try to use every part of the thread.

Heh, tiny can for CJ.

Also, pan, welcome. I hope that you enjoy it here.

I live in rural Alaska and I am a volunteer firefighter and EMT-II. My day job is doing mapmaking, which I really enjoy. I have an identical twin sister back home in Colorado and a younger sister that I miss very much. You will probably hear my name on the board referenced with pegging and Marmite. I have two adorable Scottish Fold cats named Milan and Lennybruce.
(fuck you Ray, Scottish Folds are AWESOME)
Military stuff: My father is a Vietnam War veteran and ex-Marine. A friend of mine back home in Colorado went to Annapolis. My crap-dude ex-fiance was in the Army with a combat engineering battalion and did a year in Iraq. He is part of the reason why I moved up here.

Welcome, welcome!
Hope you do indeed enjoy your time here. We are mostly a mighty civil bunch, as I'm sure has been said, and noticed.
I've been working, and  am very tired, and can't make much sense until tomorrowbut wished to say a friendly welcome before I wend my way to sleep.

As for introductions:

I'm Mike. I live in Los Angeles but grew up in a small town at the edge of the Adirondacks in Northern New York State. I'm in my  middle twenties and am trying (stumblingly) to get into writing for television and/or for film. I'm about three years into working entry-level assistant type stuff and I still sort of haven't figured out what the next step is but... such predicaments I must forge ahead. Liberal Democrat, lapsed-Catholic agnostic, Mets fan.

I live with my girlfriend, who has almost completed her masters in teaching, and my brother, who is a forensic analysis in a medical lab that tests piss for drugs. We live in a two-bedroom apartment in a part of town where we and the landlady are the only people who speak English as our first language.

A dude is into pirate radio, Adult Swim, silent movies, prog rock and rambling on internet message boards.

I'm that guy who says something that would be funny or interesting in two sentences but it takes him two pages to lay it out there. That is my role on message boards and it is a time honoured legacy that I decently carry forth into the future.

senseless bigotry
I first read this as 'sensless bigamy' and was trying to remember if VA has a big mormon population or something.

Welcome to the boards, Pan!

As for me: My name's Amanda. up until the end of February, I was a first-year Ph.D. student in Neuroscience at Ohio State, but about a month ago I decided to take a leave of absence for mental-health reasons and moved back in with my parents, who live in rural Louisiana. However, I intend to return to graduate school and complete my training in behavioral neuroscience in preparation for a career in animal research. I am a pretty big nerd, and I roleplay more than is probably healthy. I have a fairly Beef-and-Molly-like relationship with my SO, whom I generally call "The Gentleman Caller."

I'm a board admin, and I've been around basically since the split from Dumbrella, but I don't have a lot of injokes surrounding me, because I am not a terribly notable person. Actually, my injoke may just be self-deprecation, come to think of it.

My favorite single Achewood strip: THESE KNIVES!

Greetings, Pan!

You can call me MoF. I am a relatively recent member of these boards. I live in Madison, WI and I suspect I am some sort of female version of lfm, but way, waaayyyy less cool. Well, okay; I'm only like lfm in that it also takes me two pages to convey two sentences' worth of information. The biggest difference is that lfm is funny, whereas I am not. I try to be, but it rarely works. So I usually just end up taking life too seriously.

I love ballet, food, and languages; the order of preference changes haphazardly. I teach for a living, and choosing that as a career (well it kinda chose me) was the second best decision I ever made, the first being to sign up for Northern Shaolin kung fu lessons.

I live with my husband, Mr. MoF who is responsible for almost all of my nerdery, but I can't fully blame him: he merely optimized the potential that was already there.

Another difference: Mof's bosoms are elegant reminders of her being a lady whereas mine are evidence of my... aversion to gymnasia and my love of Hostess Zingers.

Also, she is definitely cooler than me because... not only did her husband take her name, her husband took her internet name. That is pretty much the most progressive marriage ever.

V-Adore wants mega huggz from Onstad.  Plus marriage.

I'm Jough.  Everything I write is an injoke and you're outside of it.  Sorry.

My name rhymes with a certain part of the female anatomy.

I'm from Philadelphia and moved to Chicago in November.  I work for a web design firm here and am lead developer on the Chicago Public Library project (it'll be pretty sweet once we launch).

I play chess, write poetry, am working on a textbook about interactive design, and since I've been playing most days at work (it's that kind of place) I've become very serious about my ping pong.

I used to play guitar 12 hours a day every day for many years and recently took up playing again.

I take photos of things around the city.

I lost 80 pounds in five months, and then put twenty back on after moving here, and now am down ten of those again.  It's just a blip on the road to overall healthiness.  I'm paying it no mind.

A few random favourite things:

Books - Ulysses, White Noise, American Psycho, The Dream Songs, Williams-Sonoma Risotto Cookbook, My System (Nimzovich), Into the Western Night, Homage to the Lame Wolf, Tropic of Cancer, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test, Et Tu, Babe?, The Quantity Theory of Insanity, Neruda and Vallejo (Bly trans.)

Directors - Fincher, Hitchcock, Scorsese, Wes Anderson, P. T. Anderson, Coen Bros., Tarantino, Soderbergh, Crowe, Lean, Tony Scott

Web Sites - The Google, Daring Fireball, Waxy.org, Ze Frank (RIP!), Flickr, Signals vs. Noise (37 Signals's blog), Kottke, Cocoa Dev Central (recent read), Macworld, TUAW, Achewood, Penny Arcade, xkcd, Wikipedia, craigslist, Gaper's Block, Engadget, The Onion, Rolling Stone (but only Peter Travers's movie reviews), Urban Dictionary

Musical Artists - The Velvet Underground, Radiohead, Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello, The Smiths, R.E.M. (early work through Up), Soul Coughing, They Might Be Giants, The Dead Kennedys, The Magnetic Fields, Beck, Belle & Sebastian, The Dead Milkmen, Carla Bruni, Blur, Frank Zappa, Frank Sinatra, Violent Femmes, Charlie Parker, Joy Division, John Coltrane, Weezer, and whoever is at the top of my Last.FM account at any given time (probably Mike Doughty's solo stuff right now).

Impressionists - Renoir, Monet, Degas, Cassatt, Pissarro

Fast Food - Roy Rogers (RIP?), In 'N' Out, Wendy's, Arby's, Chipotle, Taco Bell, Burger King

Names for Girls - Heather, Amaryllis, Helvetica, Lori, Melissa, Danielle, Marissa, Seven

Pet Names for Girls - Sweetie, Honey, Princess, Sweetness, My Dear, M'Love, Darlin'

Times of Day - Mid-Morning, Early Evening, 2-4AM (but never at Dusk!)

Seasons - Spring, Fall

Things the Devil is Quoted as Saying - "Non Serviam," "'Tis better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven," "I don't exist," "Try it, you'll like it."

Words

I've recently bought a Macbook and it quickly became my primary computer.  I'm not exactly a "switcher" but rather an aggregator, but dang if this isn't one nice little notebook.  I'm using it to write this post.

I'm not very religious, and I feel bad for people who are.

I prefer vanilla to chocolate.

I prefer wine to beer and scotch to wine.

TV shows still on the air - Veronica Mars, Lost, 24, Scrubs, The Office US, Studio 60 (although not for long :( ), Boston Legal, The Class, South Park, Battlestar Galactica

TV shows no longer on - Seinfeld, Cheers, the Simpsons, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Star Trek (original), Stargate, Futurama, Larry Sanders Show, Kids in the Hall, SCTV

Line of poetry - Somebody loves us all.

Roy Rogers (RIP?)

There is a Roy Rogers in the Thruway stop just outside of the town I grew up in.

...come to think of it, though, the only extant Roy Rogers' I know of exist at Thruway stops.

Perhaps the chain's name was only perserved for existing deals with truck stops and such forth?

Truckers are very brand loyal and tourists don't care, they just want to get a hamburger without having to get off the Thruway and witness rural poverty to get that hamburger.

I'm a 30 year old who lives in the best place on the face of the earth. (Portland: home of Pat's gay dad.)

I lurk more than I post.   If I'm inclined to post, usually it's just a couple lines of text.   Better to let people assume I'm an idiot, than to prove it.

I work for a phone company.   Some times I work 40 hours during the day, other times I work 90 hour weeks.  My job is boredom puncuated by terror.   Keeps things interesting.

At the moment, I'm posting drunk.
