Hell, I didn't even think TB was still a going concern.  To me it was like hearing someone had smallpox.

Here's an article that'll clear that up.

I remember when I used to work for the CDC in a Tuberculosis clinic. That was, like, two years ago.

TB is usually controllable. This guy has a nasty flavor. He's also uncooperative, duplicitous and probably was assisted in some way by the father-in-law who worked also for CDC. He may also be the victim of his own ignorance, arrogance, bad advice, vague medical directions, etc.

Most TB in the world starts off very treatable and manageable - through not taking your meds and not following up with testing and treatment, it can become very bad.

When I worked in Chicago there was this one patient who started off with garden-variety TB. Over the course of over 10 years of avoiding public health officials and doing partial treatments, he become untreatable. When he was finally 'caught' for the last time, he was committed to a public hospital and basically had to have a lung removed coercively. It's next to impossible to get legal coercion and court orders on people with communicable disease. You'd be amazed at the infrequency that it is even attempted, and the even smaller amount of success.

Andrew Card is the worst kind of public health offender to me because he has a sense of entitlement and an attitude of superiority - his life is too important to be interrupted by public servants, even when they are trying to protect the public. Luckily it's actually really hard to transmit TB on a plane - very rare and usually only to those very close to you, and only if the flight is really long. A few people may be at risk but I bet no one gets TB disease as a result of this guy.

While I was working in TB I collected some interesting old books, and other relics from the Sanitarium era. It was a pretty fascinating phenomenon.

Mammoth Cave, Kentucky was actually a place TB patients lived. Possibly the worst possible environment for a TB patient!

Sanitaria were often very much like spas and some were pretty expensive - because TB was not a disease mainly of poverty in those days - and between about 1880 and the 1930's there were thousands of them, many private and pretty fancy. Sometime in the '40s soil researchers discovered the first viable TB treatments and the sanitaria began their decline.

Lot of interesting stories on the Mammoth cave front. Hi Dawg.

Absolutely.  I've you've never been you should come check it out.  In addition to being a geologic wonder, humans have been exploring the cave system for millenia.

I read a book last year about how the teams of explorers connected the main Mammoth cave system to two other systems after years of arduous exploring from about 1955 to 1970.  They've charted something like 300 miles of interconnected passages.  It's cool.

So this Speaker dude has "merely" multidrug-resistant TB, which is still difficult to treat, but not as bad as the XDR-TB he was originally believed to have.  Excerpt below:

Official: Man Has Less Severe Form of TB

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Published: July 3, 2007
Filed at 2:04 p.m. ET

ATLANTA (AP) -- The globe-trotting American lawyer who caused an international public health incident by traveling while infected with tuberculosis has a less severe form of the disease than previously diagnosed, a federal health official said Tuesday.

Andrew Speaker was diagnosed in May with extensively drug resistant TB, based on a CDC analysis of a bronchoscopy sample taken in March. The XDR-TB, as it is called, is considered dangerously difficult to treat.

But a series of sputum samples have all shown his TB to be a milder form of the disease, multidrug-resistant TB, a federal health official said on a condition of anonymity because a formal announcement was planned later Tuesday.

Multidrug-resistant TB can be treated with some antibiotics that the more severe form resists.

If life were a sitcom, one of us would say our "Whoops! MY BAD!" catchphrase, the laughtrack would go off, and the closing credits would run.

It doesn't make him any less an asshole. Just means the 400 or so people he shared a plane with can breathe a little easier.

Nobody saw this coming. Well, there you go, assclown.

The fact that this guy is Harry Connick Jr's twin brother changes everything, though.

True. If I had been on that plane I would have sued the hell out of that guy.

I don't get the Harry Connick, Jr. reference, Nabu. Am I just retarded?
