While my personal amount of emphasis on it is somewhat unproductive, I don't know if you can exactly say that "what if" is a blind alley.

I think if the North had pursued the course of action you've recommended during the reconstruction it would have fostered a rift of hatred that could never be healed.

Yeah, doesn't the new album kick ass? They are playing in Salt Lake on Halloween, and I think this will be my first time seeing them.

Really?  Saw them a few years ago in a tiny place in OKC, all there new stuff sucked but sounded good on the old stuff, would this be the same material?

I got to see them a few years ago in Denver. They sounded pretty good, but then again I also dont' have any of their albums.

My only experience with Dinosaur Jr is that a friend of mine once heard me listening to "Hunky Dory" and told me how cool it was that David Bowie had covered a Dinosaur Jr song and... ever since, I have had a mental block on the topic of Dinosaur Jr.

If we can deconstruct the past, what went wrong, what could've gone right, we have a lot to learn from it on how to change the future.

Undoubtedly so, but this is not the same as daydreaming (whining) about what could have been through vague platitudes, especially if your explanation for what went wrong is simply that people were shit then, are shit now, will be shit always. Good luck putting that to any useful end.

I feel like Dino Jr. keeps putting out the same album over and over, with minor variations.  The only real difference is whether Lou Barlow is on the record or not.

Nah. I really like most of The Thin White Duke's stuff.

That's why it is weird to think of Dino Jr and people surmizing that he somehow ripped them off.

... feel sort of emotionally hung over after participating in "Take Back the Night" yesterday.

It was a good night, maybe even a great night.  Apparently it was the best attended rally on record.

We started at a community centre a couple blocks from my house, and marched through streets I often walk down alone, in the dark, filled with fear.  We marched past a mosque.  Ramadan is still on, and a group of new-Canadian Muslims stood on the side walk looking confused and scared as hundreds of feminists marched past.  I smiled and waived at them with my best "it's okay, we're not here to hurt you" face on until a few started to smiled back too.  We marched past a sex trade worker who stood intoxicated and shy, and I waved at her and motioned for her to join, but she turned shyly away, waiting for the crowd to pass so she could get back to work.  We marched past the apartment building a block from my house where a woman was stabbed to death while people in the apartment watched, too scared to come out to save her, waiting for the police.  We marched past the lot where a lone sex trade worker used to stand, vulnerable in the shadowy parking lot all the time, and I wondered if she was one of the 50 missing and murdered women in my city.  We marched past an empty apartment block on fire, and abandoned boarded up houses.  We walked past houses where families stood, smiled, waved and cheered. Houses where children watched, puzzled and surprized by the noise, and I hoped for a better future from them.  We walked past the solvent users from the park near my house, and I hoped for a better future for them too.  It was something to behold.

...go visit NASA's Ames research facility in Mountain View.  Once a quarter or so, my research team takes most of a day to go play together (our last trip was to a goat farm).  The last time I visited NASA's campus was in high school, so I'm looking forward to seeing what's changed in 20 years.  Later, my boy and I will have an evening together because my wife and daughter are going to see Miley Cyrus perform.  My daughter is beside herself with excitement - it took her until 9pm to fall asleep last night.

My roommate is totally into the newest pop music that's out.  He loooooooves Lady Gaga and Britney especially.  I know, I've tried to tell him this music is only listened to by pre teenaged girls and gay dudes, but he pays me no mind.  His playlist is a weird mix of current pop sirens and old school rockers.  It's all Britney Spears followed by Judas Priest.  And the Beatles of course.

Anyways, he's always telling me to watch this video or that and I usually do out of curiosity.  I must admit, Miley Cyrus ain't bad.

why is it so hard for me to parallel park? I had finally gotten to a point where I had done it successfully several times in a row, and then last night I spent 20 minutes trying to get into this one extra-large spot and kept ending up on the curb.

parallel parking sucks.

I rock the hell out of parallel parking in my current vehicle (Ford Explorer Hybrid), but I was terribly bad at it in my previous vehicle, which was a Mustang.  I think it has something to do with the hood being so much shorter, and also, the total Zen silence of parallel parking in the Hybrid is quite calming.
