There is an old spiritual song (hymn) called "There Is Balm in Gilead." It is a traditional African-American hymn. That is probably to which Beef refers when he says that there is Balm in Gilead during Ray's hell arc.

Quote from: hymnal
There is a balm in Gilead
To make the wounded whole;
There is a balm in Gilead
To heal the sin sick soul.

Some times I feel discouraged,
And think my work’s in vain,
But then the Holy Spirit
Revives my soul again.

Refrain

If you can’t preach like Peter,
If you can’t pray like Paul,
Just tell the love of Jesus,
And say He died for all.

Refrain

so, the phrase is referring to the V8/egg/miller lite  concoction?

I would at this point like to say that this hymn is occasionally sung in my church, and ever since the Ray in Hell sequence it has reminded me of Achewood.

That is all.

Exactly. Balm is a soothing ointment, and in this case the hangover remedy is gonna heal Ray's sin-sick soul. Or at least his stomach.

That is all.

Heh! Me too. Except Gilead always has a creepy connotation to me. In the iconic dystopian novel A Handmaid's Tale, which I first read in the 5th grade, M. Atwood tells a story about what it would be like to live in a religious theocracy in the United States - basically a Christian Taliban. The name of the new republic is Gilead. During their indoctrination after the coup, the story's protagonist Offred (we never learn what her real name used to be) used to surreptitiously sing, "There Is A Bomb In Gilead" as one of the few ways she could rebel.

What, you can't talk about the shitty Big Mac you ate while eating a Whopper, or vice versa?

Either way, I like how Linnea answered him in both places.  Linnea, you are the queen of this tiny corner of the interweb.
