I finally watched this movie last night and thought it sucked pretty hard.  I can suspend disbelief with the best of them, but there has to be some basis in reality.

Given the way the Joker treated his henchmen I found it impossible to believe he could get anyone to work for him at all much less woo the kind of skilled people it would take to pull off the impossible pranks he mounted.  Do you have any idea how long it would take to rig an entire hospital with explosives... in secrecy?  And we are to believe he did it in an hours time?  How did he do it?  Did he use his super crazy power?

That's probably the worst offense, but pretty much every scene had me shaking my head.  I just found it impossible to believe that these characters were capable of doing the things they were doing.

I mean c'mon, nobody noticed that the police honor guard had been replaced by hoodlums, one of which had a clowns face?  's funny 'cos after watching TDK I watched Von Ryan's Express in which a group of American and English prisoners in Italy during WWII were being transported by train.  They were able to kill their captors and take control of the train.  One of the most tense scenes in the movie is when they had to pass through the train station in Bologna.

Now that was some good story telling.  Not like some bullshit movie that asks you to completely give up your power to reason in order to enjoy it.

I did think Heath Ledger was good.  Not Oscar worthy, unless this was a particularly weak year for the supporting actor category, but I enjoyed his performance.

I'm a little more forgiving when a movie title starts with "Batman."

I prefer movies that don't need to be forgiven.

But I think what you are saying is we know it's dumb and makes no sense so just shut up and watch shit blow up.  In that case my review is meh, I've seen better.

Can you imagine what Tony Stark must smell like after he's flown back from the Middle East in that suit?

Current wisdom suggests rancid asparagus.

Ah, I think I get it now.  So it's kinda like watching a Tyler Perry flick then.

No no no.

Everything in The Dark Knight makes sense because The Joker is just that badass. It's all rule of badass. The Joker can pull off implausable things because he's charismatically crazy in the same manner such as David Koresh or ol' Chuck Manson, duping the criminals with force of will and snowing the normals because he's doing things that are so out there that the normals are almost blind to it, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas style.

Tyler Perry exists because he's the only person out there bankrolling middlebrow feel-good lower-middle-class pap bullshit that's specifically created to the African American market. There's mountains of this stuff out there for fuck*ng complacent suburban twits of the Caucasian persuasion, "Wild Hogs" "Practicial Magic" whatever the fuck you wanna point out, and so the financial effectiveness is past the point of marginal utility and, anyway, we're so flooded with it that we don't even notice it.

But Tyler Perry's the only dude out there slinging that kind of namby-pamby warm-and-feely soulnumbing hossshit with mostly black casts and so he has the entire market cornered for people who are into safe uninteresting heart-stringy SUV-owning drek... but wanna see it acted out by people with their same skintone for some reason.

It's the same thing with braindead poorly constructed "girl power but actually totally mainstream by the end" crap put out for ladies who think that the women on "Friends" were "just like them only prettier!" and so on. The "Waiting to Exhale" woman figured out that this sort of thing was underserved for women of colour and now she can fuck*ng print money with a machine out of broadly applied stereotypes and hackneyed tales that are somehow "new" because of swapping in actresses of African descent.

So there we are.

The Joker = Rule of Awesome

Tyler Perry = Rule of Underserved Mediocrity

What about Martin Lawrence?

The Dark Knight didn't make sense in many parts but I generally didn't notice until afterwards, so I don't care. Suspending my disbelief during the film is all it needs to do to entertain.

The long-standing stand-up comedy tradition of "whoring until you're so broke that you have to put on a suit and play a fat lady".

There are powerful strange people in the entertainment industry who are sexually attracted to guys dressing up like fat ladies.

These people find out what vices successful stand-ups are into and provide them with those vices until they're so broke that they have to accept roles in fat-lady suits.

And then they masturbate in the finest leather chairs you can possibly imagine, watching the fruits of their corruptions.

This is what happened to Martin Lawrence, Eddie Murphy, Tyler Perry and... I mean... probably George Carlin too and they just banned the film.

LFM gets a can for cynicism and paranoia that makes the world a slightly better place.

Except for that bit about Carlin. If he ever whored he did it properly, and probably bit it off while he was down there.
