I took some mushrooms with some friends and kind of watched it.  I was really happy when Arizona took the lead and then lost intrest so it was alright.

Judy, to answer your questions:

You can play bastardized versions of football.  I think most kids in the U.S. start playing football on recess in elementary school (1-5th or 6th grade, 5-11ish) probably at around 7-8 years old.  You would not have any of the offensive or defensive lines or running backs, but would be like 6 to 10 person sides with 1 quarterback and the rest receivers or defensive backs (the dudes who guard the receiver).  Maybe you would have 2-3 pass rushers who, instead of getting blocked, have to rush on like 5 mississippi or something (a count to about 5 seconds).

By this time kids who are into sports have probably played (in organized leagues) soccer around the ages of 4-5, then most stop, baseball from 5-6 to whenever they quit, and basketball starting at like 6 or 7 to whenever they quit.  Flag football starts around 8 and is pretty lame.  Then when you are about 12 you can start to join leagues and school teams that tackle.  I haven't played tackle football in years, but my last few years of high school we would have lots of pick up tackle games.  Again though, there would be no offensive lines, defensive lines or running backs.  You would get to hit the shit out of each other though, without pads, which is pretty fun.  I remember being really sore after these games and it would probably destroy me as an adult, but it is super fun if you can do it.  Lots of people also play like 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 games as adults in the park or something, and maybe in organized 8-11 person teams, mainly flag football (belts with flags that can be ripped of instead of getting tackled) but sometimes tackle.

Basically to sum it up:  you can play football without a shit load of organization, but it is kind of dangerous, probably more so as you age, and takes away what could be the three most important areas of the game (both lines and running backs).

Keith's post made me realise what I don't get about american football, it seems to be all about pre-emptive strikes.

Wait, one of the teams was called the Cardinals? Isn't that kind of like calling them, like, the Daisies?

And when did Doc become an emergency backup pug?

Several years ago I read some book that said the average football game actually last about 16 minutes if you only count the time that the ball is actually in play. How they stretch that out to 3 hours I'll never know.

And what happened with the running time last night? It used to be that they scheduled the "after show" for 10, but it didn't usually start until 10:15 or so. This year The Office wasn't even scheduled until 10:30 and it didn't start until like 10:45. The rules of the game didn't change, so where did that extra half hour of waiting come from?

Of course I'm still bitter because the last season of Futurama never actually aired on the east coast. With a 7pm start time it was always preempted by some boring game running long and a post-game show with a bunch of washed-up players nobody has heard of and Terry Bradshaw.

With all the crap going on in and around the Super Bowl (and other mega-events like the Oscars), it ALWAYS takes longer than the scheduled time.

The old cliche about football is that it combines two of the worst aspects of American culture:  violence and committee meetings.

I had absolutely no dog in this fight--plenty of reasons to root for or against either team, so who cares.  At least it was a good game.

My favorite commercial was the one where the two guys try to play frisbee with a yak.

I believe it was shortly after the phrase appeared on Wombatarama.  There was a thread somewhere that he heaped praise on the concept and his .sig switched from (natsukashii - sp?) to emergency backup pug that same day.

I was wrong - it was here.  The charming photo of her $2000 haircut was what I was thinking of initially.

I am somewhere between scared and impressed that you tracked my decision making tree so quickly and easily. From memory natsukashii came from Wombat too (Japanese for ennui or something similar?) so I guess you're having a big influence on my net identity big W.

Naw, Cort can make pulls like that from 2004.  This was from Christmas time, and I think Wombat's pugs are cute and was dismayed to hear one was ill.

Slate's take on Super Bowl Ads.

I'm sad that the Baldwin Hulu spot isn't here.

The game was pretty good, though I still to this day do not really understand football.

Bruce Springsteen makes my flesh crawl and always has. Phony, has-been, schlockmeister.

The tone of the advertising this year was downright sociopathic. That said, the best moment of the day was seeing a koala getting punched in the face.

I thought perhaps some people would appreciate a link to this interactive Twitter map: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/02/02/sports/20090202_superbowl_twitter.html

The emoticon and "Go" filters are pretty funny to see. I would love to see a short video of game highlights mixed with the various twitters going on at that point. One step towards the colloquial "hive mind."
