Genes have something to do with the ease of gaining muscle size - but not as much as some might say (in my opinion).  The majority of "hardgainers" are people who are trying to simultaneously gain muscle and lose fat.  Gaining muscle mass requires an excess of calories above baseline, and sufficient stimulus to convince your body that your life requires it.  Your body operates on a pretty straight forward energy budget, and it will do everything it takes to have enough energy to run your brain, stay warm, and make babies.  Beyond that, it tries to keep your physique sufficient to survive what a "typical" day demands.  Exercise is your strategy to convince your body that it is worth spending valuable energy to build (metabolically) expensive tissue like muscle, and you have to keep at it long enough for your body to recognize that the state you want is now "typical" and that it needs to adapt to it.
This person is a voice I've come to trust in understanding how diet, exercise, and social pressures interact with body image and health.  She is one of the voices on the Fitcast podcast - they have a huge archive of good stuff going back 5 years or so.
The main strike you have in quickly gaining muscle is having 2 X chromosomes.   On the other hand, you strike me as a person who can commit to and execute a long term plan, and perseverance is the name of this game.  In brief, the strategy is to lose enough weight through diet and do enough gradually increasing levels of exercise to position yourself for a successful program of weight training.  You then train hard, eat well, and rest enough to get a good boost of body weight through muscle mass.  You then establish a long term lifestyle of exercise and moderate eating to keep your physique where you want it.

Yeah, except that the problem is time. Right now I am lucky to be able to get 30 minutes 3x/week for any kind of exercise, and even that is going to be more than I can manage starting Monday when I have either one or both kids out of school continuously until mid-August.

So limiting my calorie intake is much, much easier than finding the time to exercise regularly, at least for the next year and change until my youngest goes to Kindergarten. But it sounds like you're saying that it's worthwhile to spend a year essentially "dieting" to get down to a weight/size where I'm happy, and then increasing exercise to build muscle and make it easier to maintain that size. Does that sound right?

If you know someone who has not seen that film, you have a solemn duty to rectify the situation.

Yes, this is my understanding.  You will still want some sort of exercise just to maintain good health and get the mental health rewards it brings.  Naturally chasing after 2 active kids will provide some of that, but something you do voluntarily (like the run/walk thing we were talking about a few weeks back) will help quite a bit.

Ham, swiss, and fresh whole basil leaves, grilled and melty.

Yessss. It absolutely has to be ham and swiss; the salty/savory blend perfectly counterbalances the sweet basil. Prosciutto would probably work, too.

This would be perfect if you added tomatoes to the mix.

That advice never surprises me coming from you, Paul. But as we've discussed numerous times before, I cannot abide fresh tomatoes. I know that this depresses you, and for that I apologize.

To balance things out, today I had a sandwich made of five-spice chicken (left over from dinner) with avocado, nice ripe tomato and organic spring-mix greens on whole wheat with mayo.

This is probably my first sandwich after being off sandwiches for quite a while, and I thought "I want to eat this for lunch tomorrow too."

That sounds like a winning chicken sandwich.

I have been making the same old, same old sandwiches (turkey, chicken, etc.) but Spouse has started bringing in these packs of dill havarti and muenster cheeses that just kick the piss out of old boring cheddar, colby, jack or...shudder...american.

ALSO: sweet pickles make a nice condiment change-up, if you can't abide them try a nice butter-garlic dill.

Muenster is what I buy 99% of the time when I get lunchmeat. Unless pepper-jack is on sale or something.

I'm not always interested in cheese on sandwiches.  It really depends.

Question:  when people say American Cheese, do they mean processed cheese slices, like Kraft Singles?

PS:  I don't like pickles on anything - burgers or sandwiches.  I will eat dill pickles on the side, but only if they are the crunchy kind.  None of those limp Bicks.

Except smoked. Screw that smoking stuff.

Wait, what?  Do I understand you correctly to say that you do not like smoked meats?

Are you some sort of space alien or something?
