This was the decade when webcomics tried to step up and prove they deserve a place alongside the great newspaper strips of the past, but Chris Onstad’s Achewood is one of the few that’s proven worthy of the challenge. Hiding some powerfully good storytelling behind simple art, Achewood quickly evolved from a reliably funny gag strip to a still funny but surprisingly deep character-driven comedy that’s stayed sharp no matter what bizarre direction it’s veered in. Ray and Roast Beef, the central funny-animal protagonists—human-like in their bad behavior, if nothing else—form the strip’s spine, and Onstad has found humor and meaning in their enjoyably quirky argot and exploration of the meaning of adult friendships. When he wants to go for more broad or surreal humor, he’s been able to draw on a bench of supporting characters as deep as any great sitcom’s.

The rest of the list (alpha order as is their article)

The Acme Novelty Library, Chris Ware
All-Star Superman, Grant Morrison & Frank Quitely
American Elf, James Kochalka
Asterios Polyp, David Mazzucchelli
Black Hole, Charles Burns
Blankets, Craig Thompson
Box Office Poison, Alex Robinson
Criminal, Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips
Daredevil, Brian Michael Bendis & Alex Maleev
DC: The New Frontier, Darwyn Cooke
Eightball #23 (“The Death Ray”), Daniel Clowes
Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, Alison Bechdel
George Sprott, 1894-1975, Seth
The Golem’s Mighty Swing, James Sturm
The Goon, Eric Powell
Louis Riel: A Comic-Strip Biography, Chester Brown
The Mystery Of Mary Rogers, Rick Geary
One Hundred Demons, Lynda Barry
Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi
Promethea, Alan Moore & J.H. Williams III
Pyongyang: A Journey In North Korea, Guy Delisle
Tales Designed To Thrizzle, Michael Kupperman
Why Are You Doing This?, Jason
Y: The Last Man, Brian K. Vaughan

Achewood is the only one billed as a webcomic, though they picture one of the books. American Elf is apparently on the list due to its books and not its online content.

I am wondering why Fables isn't on that list.

Still, I haven't read most of these, so I might have to check some of them out. I have heard nothing but awesome about Persepolis, but haven't got round to actually reading it yet.

Persepolis is really great, and made me want to learn Persian.
