There was the very odd bit of Bush off of Sixteen Stone that wasn't bad. But in general, they suck and Gavin Rossdale is a pretentious twat!

Good grief, you would probably love Falconer. I had a friend once that had a straight-up irony-free love affair with this album. How many times can you be forced to listen to "Lord of the Blacksmiths" on a simple car trip to Whataburger? You'd be surprised!

Oh, dear Lord. Well, I'm downloading the demo MP3s; I will probably die of desperately attempting to balace good taste -- "V," I will say to myself, "you really like R.E.M., and Radiohead, and real bands" -- with ironic enjoyment.

I also spotted a Tag Team / Coldplay mashup on Kazaa entitled "Whoomp! Clocks It Is". No fuck*ng idea as I didn't download it, and cannot even begin to imagine.

It is a shame for the world that you didn't download this. I will bug a friend with Kazaa until I have a copy.

I'm guessing "Coldplay" is the name of a band?

Wow. That Falconer song was T-N-T.

Still, Lost Horizon are my boys.  Any band from Sweden who dress like extras from Isaac Mizrahi's Vikings and have names like Preternatural Transmogrifyer are my kinda dumb.  Talk about guilty pleasures.  If Awakening the World had come out when I was fifteen, it would have been my favorite album of all time.

For a review that states the case better than I can, scroll halfway down this page: http://www.aquariusrecords.org/cat/l7.html

Oh, yeah, and Coldplay.

Ouch.
I tried to get my brother to buy the Nelly Furtado album, because Paul Leary (producer of Sublime and Tweaker) produced.
He was wise though.

And, I guess, your mention of indie reminding me, that is the issue.
Coldplay are the current holders of the indie crown. And that is what became indie in the UK - BritPop.
I swear, indie mags and labels were dying by the hundred when Oasis became all that was indie. When Stone Roses were second in line to being the most noted indie band around. When, jesus christ, Blur were competing with Oasis to be the number 1 indie band that week.
The independent chart disappeared.
It was horrible!
But now Coldplay are the replacement for what Oasis did, for what Blur were, and for what Radiohead always managed to avoid being.
And I'm not even that fond of Radiohead anymore. I still like them, though haven't heard much of the last two albums.
I still thing The Bends was a seminal album of its time and place, and bits of OK Computer are stunning.
But basically, I'm more into rock than I ever was anything else.
So basically all that was saying - instead of going for indie cred, I always avoided rock cred, because that was like the uncool way of having rock cred. If you know what I mean.
It's not really possible to have world music cred is it?

On-topic: All my musician friends raved about Parachutes when it came out, and I like the first few songs on it just fine, though the CD tends to see a lot more wear-n-tear in my wife's Honda.

I was the same way. My musician friends mainly play rock and punk but they universally raved about Parachutes. I bought it for a rocker for her birthday and she proclaimed it best gift. Weird.

This happened to me, as well, only I made it held out a bit longer - tracking down some of the "why oh why wasn't this considered good enough for an LP" b-sides off of The Bends and OK Computer played a big part in sustaining my interest. I haven't heard note one off of Hail to the Thief - I just haven't been interested. After playing Amnesiac to death, I just feel like I've heard all the Radiohead I care to hear, ever. (The videos are, however, by and large things of grace and beauty.)

Trite as it sounds, I pretty much cut myself loose from a group of friends because their heads had disappeared completely up their own asses in this pursuit of indie cred. They fell all over themselves to profess their love and devotion for crap like Tenacious D and Andrew W.K. (the musical equivalents of fuck*ng knock-knock jokes) because it gave them cache and a cozy, brand new shiny set of catch phrases and cultural touchpoints to massage each other with. Suddenly it was indie to rock, etc etc. DURRR I'M JACK BLACK AND HAVE YOU MET MY DEAD hoss

The Fall at their top-dollar best (which is horrifyingly often) rock harder and better than anything, and yet almost cancelled their Houston show after selling only... twelve tickets. HIIIIIIIPSTERS, COME OUT AND PLAAAAAAAAY

I did the same. Ended up with a cd full of live and unreleased Radiohead, which I listened to more than the albums.

As for Andrew W.K., my friend's father was bought a copy by one of his friends for his birthday, and just came home and looked at us and said "Is this a joke?". How you get any kind of cred for listening to that cockknocker. And I'm sorry, but it is the only word applicable to the man... thing...
Ugh.

As for world music there, if ANY of you ever see Radio Tarifa playing near you, drop everything and go. They are fuck*ng superb!
They jam better than anyone I've ever seen. And they're just superb.

I don't give a flying fuck about 'cred' in the first place.  I listen to what I like, and I probably listen to a lot of music that a hipster would find apalling.  So if listening to Andrew WK is what it takes to get 'cred,' then by all means count me out

I just find it funny that AndrewWK tickets/CDs are constantly involved in radio station give aways even though I have never heard a single second of him actually on the radio.

'Tan, I can't believe you're not down with the 'D.

I don't know if Tenacious D brings street cred, but what I do know is that I've enjoyed them since I saw them on the Mr. Show Spinoff show on HBO.

All three episodes.

I even bought their new DVD that has all of the episodes on it with a full live concert (which was also very funny) and a bunch of other stuff.

But the D isn't really a musical act as much as a comedy act.  I mean, do you get indie cred by listening to old Richard Pryor albums too?

Funny you should mention this, my housemate brought a copy home last night and I sat watching it, mesmerized, for way too long.

Funny stuff, The D.

Damn. Think I have to try and track me down that DVD!
That is less the tracking and more than waiting til I have money...

As for cred, and Paul's comment, I think one of my favourite bands to listen to on the subject, would be Masters of Reality, who are just so unfashionable.
There's something about them. They're great, and they don't sound, well, I don't know how to describe it. But you can't really picture them being listened to on the radio, and it just fills me with glee for some reason.
I too absolutely shun listening to music for cred. I was just saying is all... Doesn't stop me talking about it.
Hell, people at gigs I've done have been noticably pissed off with my choice of music, because most of the people who DJ rock tend to play singles and M2 videos, but I refuse to stick to that. I will play whatever seems right after whatever I just played. And if I can get the crowd into something they don't already know, all the better.

To be fair, I've heard this - that their album can only really be appreciated if you'd seen the comedy sketches. I never have - so when their album came out, it was as though all these (otherwise somewhat reasonable) people were suddenly transformed into hilarious rock fan stereotypes, all dropping their voices two octaves when discussing the D, throwin' the horns and generally acting like every idiot that ever set shopping carts on fire behind the old K-Mart in high school. The album itself has its clever moments, but eh - there's a reason I don't have my old Weird Al cassettes in constant rotation. I realize that it's all supposed to be tongue-in-cheek, to some extent - but some people don't seem to realize this; good lawd, y'all.
