So our cats aren't getting along that well, after all. The youngest and the new one now are having a problem, with the young one chasing the older one all around the house and actually attacking with claws out. The older one is now segregated back upstairs with cat box and food and everything., It's disappointing.

So almost a couple of months. I think if no one is actually drawing blood I would give it another month, if you can stand it. I was just checking some sources I think are reliable and one says that to actually become friends it can take cats 8 to 12 months. I don't think they mean that they should be attacking each other the whole time of course, but it can be a slow process, and if it's more than two the dynamics are even more complicated.

fuck*ng cats, seriously.

The shitty thing is the Poozler and Caleb were actually doing pretty well until maybe 10 days ago, and then Poozler decided "hey, fuck the new guy - my house".

That was the way it was for one of the kitties when we brought the dog into the picture.  I'm not sure if a cat brain actually works this way, but it seemed that at some point one of the cats realized the dog was not a temporary visitor.  We had had plenty of other temporary visitors of human and dog variety, but they'd stay for maybe a weekend at most, and the one who took issue with such visitors would do a combo of either being okay about it or hiding until the visitors moved on.  With the dog, after about two weeks, she appeared to return to normal behavior but would leave a neat pile of cat shit beside her food dish.  It was like the cat equivalent of a passive aggressive note: "dear humans:  fuck you."  Over time and much coddling she stopped doing this, but now if anyone makes a fuss - human or animal - she comes charging into the room and bats the dog in the face a couple times.  Any strife, in her kitty mind, is the dog's fault, and it is her job to put him in his place.  She weighs maybe 4lbs, the dog weighs 34lbs.  Needless to say, she is a very lucky kitty that we have trained the dog so throughly.

I had a dog and cat that never really got along too well.  To be honest, the cat was an asshole, poor dog had a lot to put up with.  The dog died and it was just me and the cat for a while.  Finally I decided to get another dog.  I was worried that cat was gonna make the new dogs life miserable.  Cat took to the new dog right away.  Happy ending.  True story.

Well, this same cat will lie next to the dog, within a inch or two of him, so needless to say things aren't too bad between them.  She will lay within direct wagging distance of his tail, and squint with utter annoyance while his tail bats her in the face.  She'll just lie there.  She only attacks him if she perceived anyone, and especially me, is suffering in some way.  I call her "my furry enforcer."  Once the husband and I were watching Failblog clips on YouTube and exclaiming loudly "oh no!  Ouch!" etc, and she came hurrying in and furiously whacked the dog, who was sleeping quietly in the corner, in the face, then left.  She never uses her claws for this though, so the dog just sort of blinks and looks confused then continues on with whatever he's doing.

Yeah, the one cat bats the one it has lived with her whole life in the face often, but without claws. New one gets claws out treatment. The older one who has always lived here sometimes shits in inappropriate places, but it's always sort of done that once in a while. I don't know what his deal is.
