My parakeet engaged in epic bouts of self-love.  All staring into the mirror - no doubt thinking, "You're a dirty, dirty girl" and leering.  Never laid any eggs though.

We got two normal sized eggs and one little deformed one this season. Quakers have two mating seasons per year so I hope we don't get much more. (Squeaker is a Quaker.)

Scooter is the macaw. Scooter has laid no eggs this year. I hear that macaws lay every other year. Last year Scooter laid 23 eggs. Twenty three. Normally macaws lay clutches of four to six.

P.S. when the parrot starts masturbating, it is best to put on Barry White "Never Gonna Give You Up." This does nothing for the parrot and is generally infuriating/irritating for the person who actually owns the parrot. But it is hilarious for the SO of the parrot owner. True facts.

My preferred method for dispatch when they're caught on a glue trap is the quick head rap to the edge of the trash can.

Sharp head rap on the edge of the counter is the approved method at the reptile house. Once in a while some do-gooder tries to get us to gas them instead. We used to gas them at my other zoo. Having seen that, and then had the "animal welfare" committee tell us we should do that instead of something that's basically instantaneous, is about on the top of my list of life experiences that have made me suspicious of do-gooders.

My in-laws put out that poison that makes them bleed to death internally.  I came across a rat slowly dragging itself along a walkway around their house.  Quick whack with a hammer put us both out of his misery.

I don't think the person who had to sit there watching the slowly dying squirming bag of gassed rodents felt like she wasn't the agent of their destruction. The decision about which way to do it was made by people who never had to actually do it or see it done. No doubt they felt fine about it.
