I mean, dogs are the best. Can't live without them. But make sure you have pet insurance for emergencies because they seriously have the WORST judgement.

This.  Our old girl just strained her neck about a month ago, so we spent a month on pain killers and muscle relaxers and banned from the leash.  Thankfully she's better now, but the leash ban was hard on her.  She likes to patrol the yard, and has adapted well to being on the leash.  Being restricted to the fenced part of the yard was just no fun for her when she knows she has responsibilities. 

And poor Lyle the neurotic pit bull.  He's allergic to grass so he likes to stay on the porch.  He also has to take Benadryl all day, which from his perspective is like winning the lottery.  Did you know that if you stick doggy pills in a little ball of liverwurst they'll swallow them with no trouble and ask for more?

Were they offering just one company or did you get to compare several? We actually just switched to a new company and doing the research, the prices were very different. Wirecutter did a detailed review pretty recently, might be worth checking it out.

But I think insurance is always a gamble that different people play differently, you know? We've had many-thousand-dollar incidents with previous dogs and I would like the security of knowing that that would be paid for if it happens, even if most years I'm losing money on the deal. YMMV.
