@achewood I am composing a tone poem about eagles, lawnmowers, and Ted Nugent. It is composed only of the sounds of those things.

No retard should pay to eat (Dec. 16)

Pedro is right - you see, in old fashioned pinball tables you could literally tilt and bump the table to get the ball rolling where you wanted.

Sometime in the 60s manufacturers started adding little mercury bubble switches (the same kind used as booby-traps in bombs which make the bomb explode if you pick up or jostle the bomb) that would turn off the flipper controls if you bumped the table too much.

Often the "TILT" light would come on to admonish you for playing dirty.

But it is generally agreed that tilting the machine is part of the game, and part of any winning player's strategy.

Just ask Tommy.

I was just kidding with the pinball machines.  I thought this was some new ice machine related usage I'd never heard of.

In the newer pinball machines, TILT makes your flippers go limp.  This often reinforced association with banging on the machine and going limp later proved to be a psychological barrier difficult to overcome.

Recovery was a hard road.  I'd like to thank my wife and Whack-A-Mole.

Though not always evidenced by my posts, I am able to remember old-school pinball. You know what makes my flippers go limp? Condescension.

Seriously though, let's think. Ice machine... on tilt... DAMMIT! All I can think of now is pinball. All hitting the ramp bonus. All wondering what freak had a 14-digit high score.  All spending my day at the water park in a vain attempt to be that geek. All abandoning the machine when Shinobi dropped...

I have always used the term "on the tilt" to mean broken - just like saying "on the fritz" - and that's what I assume it means.

A broken ice machine, while totally fitting my past experiences with Best Western, does not explain 4 things adequately:

1) I had forgotten that the word "Tilt" is capitalized.
2) its "on Tilt" not "on the tilt"
3) why Beef would actually be looking for a broken ice machine. Maybe he will follow a trail of ice from a vandalized (re: Tilted) ice machine that Ray has likely toe up?
4) why I harp on things I cannot explain

good and obsessive points - I was thinking the machine Beef is seeking would be broken from over use from over drinkin', but the capital T has now thrown me as well.  Hooray for semantics!!

Not so much vandalized as completely exhausted. Wherever there is an empty ice machine, Ray is somewhere nearby getting his mad drink on. If we want to be overly obsessive about it, I will point out that old pinball machines, once tilted, were pretty much locked up until reset by the operator.

These days (not that they're really making pinball machines anymore, the bastards) the tilt mechanism is a plumb-bob suspended in the center of a metal ring. If the machine is sufficiently tilted / physically abused, plumb-bob touches metal ring, completes circuit, triggers Bad Things, etc. It would be completely unscrupulous to open up a pinball machine and tape said plumb-bob out of harm's way.

"4) Because you're on tilt."

Your post does not explain 3 things adequately:

1) wouldn't that be #5? or are you answering? it is not clear. if only everyone could be an asshole in organized list form like myself...
2) yours is a statement of fact, the above points sought to explore the root of Roast Beef's statement on a fundamental etymological/semantic level

IV)  Because I'm on tilt, too.

Who said it was a bad thing, anyhow.

Lighten up, Francis!

The accepted antidote for this among my peers was:

Me American
Me so smart
Me not drink the yucky part

The idea that someone without a basic grasp of grammar could successfully operate a centrifuge and / or gas chromatograph... ah, the innocence of childhood.
