Remember when the United States congress was having floor debates about whether or not that woman would die? That shit was surreal. It was the same week the pope died.

that hard drive has a soul damnit!  pet dogs and cats don't have souls, but that hard drive has a soul.

yeah I really feel sorry for people whose religious belief relegates other species to some lesser plane of existence.  This dude at work, I like him a lot, he's one of the most decent people you'll ever meet in the world, has a great all around sense of ethics, and then one day he starts ranting about how pets don't have souls and so it's a sin to feed them organic cat food or something that that effect.  The dude probably votes republican because they're ostensibly pro-life, or something like that.

I don't believe animals have souls, but the only way that affects my beliefs about how they should be treated is that it requires that they not be held responsible for acting according to their instincts, even when that results in hurting humans.

In other words, animals aren't people and should be treated with respect, dignity, and an appropriate level of caution.

I'm just curious, what is the basis that animals don't possess a soul?

According to catholicism? Animals can't have a meaningful relationship with god.

Hm.  If every molecule in the universe has a soul, and I let a hard drive die, am I actively condemning possible universes?  Ponderable.

I don't know what a soul is?  I mean, I know what soul is, it's like, a genre of music, and a way of being.  But 'a' soul?  That's like, a really high capacity flash drive that God uses to back me up?  So in case I'm destroyed by fire or flood or the like, I can continue to exist, on some sort of virtual level?  I don't know about that.  Wake up one day, all uploaded to God's hard disk storage array, without a physical body?  God's all like 'I couldn't save your body, but I saved your hard drive'  http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/12/15/owner.still.awaiting.compensation/

No.  Fuc7 you God!  What good is my Hard Drive to me without my HARD DRIVE if you know what I mean.  A soul without a physical pen1s just wouldn't be the same.  I like my peni5 .  A lot.  I refuse to believe that God would let me exist without my p3nis.  That sounds more like something that Satan would do.  Separate me from my physical p3nis for all of eternity.  I could probably also do with labia and a pu$$y and a clit, in a pinch.  either way.  I'm sure that rocks too.  Hell, in a way that's even better because you have the strap-on option, so you can kind of go both ways.  But to have neither?  For the rest of eternity?  Just hanging out there as some invisible black-matter anti-energy with no mass and no physicality and no peni5, in the ethernet of space and time?  WTF people.  Get a grip!  no pun intended.

So did we decide if electronic devices have souls? Because if my Blackberry has a soul, it's the reincarnation of Hitler, is what it is.

I'm not Catholic, but I don't believe animals have souls simply because that's the exclusive right of humans, being created in the image of God and all. If Genesis is to be believed, that is -- which, clearly, is up for debate.

We humans, having souls, reason, and consciences, are supposed to be stewards of the earth and all its inhabitants, caring for all God's creatures, especially those who lack opposable thumbs and higher thinking skills. Unfortunately, a lot of otherwise comitted Christians have forgotten this bit.

Do we get to eat animals? Yeah, because they don't have souls and God made them of meat for our benefit (again, Genesis). Do we get to raise them in abominable conditions, shoot them full of hormones and drugs, and beat them with sticks when they don't behave exactly as we'd like? No, because they also feel pain and fear. It seems pretty clear to me, and I don't know why there seems to be this cultural divide between right-wing fundamentalist Christians and hard-core environmentalists. Caring about the planet should be tied closely to Christianity, I can't figure out why a lot of Christians seem offended by the very concept of environmental awareness.
